    The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

      You'd be surprised how many artists out there can actually really sing and should be considered performers and not just singers. The industry standard is to retouch everything, which sort of devalues people who have real skill. I wish more people were recognized as singers for their singing and performing and not just what they can do after a million takes in a studio and post production!!

      In the 2001 documentary, she said that she was very nervous and about being terrified because she was inexperienced about performing in front of a lot of people. She said that she thought she threw up for almost 3 months before she did this performance.
      I think she did a great job.

    for people who think this song is about her liking Judy:
    It's a real story and It's not hers, the song is a semi-true story based on one of the co-writers’ daughter’s birthday parties. Seymour Gottlieb's daughter's name is judy, his daughter is straight and her boyfriend cheated on her on her birthday.

      Many of the live performances in the 50s and until the mid 60s were pre recorded due to them not having the technology (they did technically but it took so much time to set up and was very difficult). In the late 60s they eventually just started using backing tracks so the singers could sing along so it wasn’t as awkward.
      I do think singers then had far more talent as you had to be amazing to even get discovered in the first place but yeah the live performance probably might’ve not always been so flawless if they were actually live if that makes sense?

    everyones going on about how due to the fact that she's a lesbian she is clearly singing about Judy, y'all are aware she stated in an interview that she wasn't aware of her sexuality during this time right? She came out and realised she was a lesbian well after the 1960s, this song was most likely performed as your average love song with no other intentions behind it. Her later version of 'You Don't Own Me' in the 1980s has much more power, typically I put this down to the fact that she has realised her sexuality at this point and channels this into the performance. At least that makes far more sense than any of her other 60s performances.

    Shortly after Gore's death, Judy Solash, the daughter of the hit's songwriter Seymour Gottlieb, told the New York Daily the story behind the song's catchphrase. It was actually inspired by a tantrum Solash threw before her own Sweet 16 party.
    Apparently Solash's parents told her her grandparents had to be invited to the party and she didn't want them there so she started crying and her father told her to stop. Her response was: "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to."
    Quite a funny origin for such an iconic catchphrase😂

    If none of this performance was pre-recorded, that was a heckuva live presentation. Vocal, custom arrangement, live orchestra and mixed chorus- they came loaded for bear on that one!

      Playbyplaymedia Thats how Ed Sullivan and Variety shows did it. Pit Orchestra, and vocalist backups. Quite live. You can see Leslie, pressing her tongue against her teeth. while enunciating her very clear letter, 'L,' in 'fool.'. She was so very talented. If you ever watch the 60's Batman show, she played a mouse costumed character, with Cat Woman on an episode. They have her song, CA nights, on it.

      @@ivangranger8494 If there wasn't a pre-recorded track she was singing live to (and it sounds like the Ray Bloch orchestra is live), I wonder where the backup singers were and why they didn't show them. We also rarely got to see the Ray Bloch orchestra. On Sullivan, many solo artists like Leslie here, didn't hold a mic, or stand near one. It appears they used an overhead microphone here.

      Shave- a-thon The same reason why we do not see the Orchestra, probably. The focus is on her. Ed Sullivan was a perfectionist, with a huge sense of humor. Did you get to see the one 'Whats my line, when he is the secret guest and wears a monster mask, so when they take of their masks, they must have gotten quite a jolt. The more I think of it, the same must go for commenters with my chosen face identity. " I am not the man, in the picture.". 😅

      @benkleschinsky Před 3 lety +2

      Ed Sullivan was such a perfectionist and looked down on prerecorded singing, that when an artist requested not to sing live he would ask the label to send out a four track copy of the master tape from the studio, and they would mix reverb and microphone feedback into the mix to make the audio appear live. He would also turn the live mics on so even when they were singing to a track they picked up their voice too. You can hear that clearly on all of the Mamas & Papas performances.

      @shave-a-thon3415 Před 3 lety

      @@benkleschinsky Where did you read the bit about the 4 track master? The board for audio that CBS was using in the Sullivan control room didn't have the facilities to even play back a four track master, unless you're intimating that Sullivan's people sent out the tape to dub in reverb and then mix it down to one track and keep the mikes open for a live ambient sound while the band did the lip syncing. After 1965, alot of bands were lipsyncing on Sullivan with some singing live over audio instrumental tracks.

    She was so nervous about this performance that she threw up regularly in the months leading up to it 🥺 she had really bad stage fright in the beginning of her career and even had hypnotherapy for it. Shows what a professional she was as it never showed! 👏🏼

      She's a great performer! A lovely voice, and she's lesbian, at a time where the civil rights movement was just starting. Another example that I love is Paul McCartney of The Beatles. He has told stories of him literally shaking and saying(I'm paraphrasing here): "This is terrible! Why am I doing this to myself?" There's a really funny story about their performance also on the Ed Sullivan show, a sound engineer asked him "Are you nervous?" He replied: "No." The sound guy then replied "Well, you should be. There are 75 million people watching!"
