79 years old and still learning. I’ve made a lot of clothes for myself in my younger days but never, ever knew even half of what you taught in this video. Can’t thank you enough for such a great tutorial. By the way, your sweet, happy, disposition comes out in your face. Bless your heart. Keep your great videos coming and do stay well.

I hadn’t sewn for years, and had my first project cut out to a size 22 (or I should say, I had the bodice pieces cut out on an old bed-sheet to do a trial run before using my expensive and beautiful fabric), according to measurements on the back of the packet. But after this video, with your instructions to use “finished garment measurements,” I went back and re-cut it into a 16 (my finished garment measurements were actually a size 14, but 16 was the smallest size of the pattern I’d bought), AND IT FIT PERFECTLY! So the skirt pieces I was worried about my hips, I cut out in a size 22, but marked the sewing lines in a 16. It fit perfectly in the waist, but snug on the hips, so drew in the size 18 lines for hip downwards, merging to size 16 at the waist. IT WAS A PERFECT FIT. So then I was so excited to then cut out my beautiful fabric, and had the confidence of fit. I’m so happy how my dress turned out!!
I owe this video so much, thanking you, for helping me to get back into sewing again😘😘I cannot wait to start more projects!

Thank you so much for doing this series. I teach beginners sewing and my first 2 classes are these discussions. It is amazing how many sewing classes do not include these discussions! I get students all of the time that say they took a class at a store, etc. and no one ever taught them how to read a pattern so the item they made turned out alright, but they felt clueless to make something on their own because they didn't know how to make sense of the patterns they liked. I was surprised to hear that you began sewing in 2014 and were self taught. You are amazing in your sewing and fearless in taking on all types of garments. Congratulations to you on your journey and thank you for offering blessings at the end of each video. We all need them, especially now!! Thanks again.

Hi Brittany I am 53 years I am teaching myself how to sew, about 3 years ago I was about 220 I am only 5'3'' After being diagnosed with diabetes, I started losing weight, then I got H-pylori than Achalasia, it went undiagnosed for almost a year crazy right I went down to 119 pounds finally diagnosed and treated, yes I have been watching a lot of you videos YES I saw your health issues as well. Anyway, food and weight have been a problem for me most of my life I truly thank God for my husband who loves me no matter what weight I am. I have the body type of a young boy lol. Thanks for a very informative video, Brittany! With the retail cost of the big 4 increasing, and the number of pattern sales decreasing, I'd like to mention the little cousin of the big 4; New Look patterns. Not as many views and options to choose from in each, but generally one envelope carries all the sizes, and they are $4.99, every day at your craft store.

My goodness! What a gem! Thank you for your many gifts and contributions to newbies like me who have decided to learn to sew.
My grandmother was a seamstress and my grandfather was involved in leather making. Perhaps I am feeling sentimental, but at 55 I've decided to seriously consider working on a new hobby! I've been losing my hearing and have tinnitus...so I have given up on my horn playing. Thus, sewing has won out for a new hobby for me! (I hope my grandmother would be pleased!)
In the past couple months, I've been reading various materials and watching plenty of videos. I have gathered many sewing materials and got a sewing machine for Xmas. I don't feel inclined to make dresses and such, although I might for my mother-in-law. Still, I found your instructional videos to reveal many techniques that I will inevitably use in whatever other projects I will do. I'm in the process of preparing for my first project - a tote bag. All the same, I just wanted to say how much I've enjoyed watching your videos. I'm feeling much more comfortable now that I have watched this four part video on reading and using patterns. Thank you so much!

Brittany, thank you for sharing this information. I’m in my 60’s and have sewn all my life. When I was younger,I wore a 14 I bought a 14 size pattern and cut out a size 14 without blinking and it fit. After marrying and having kids I wasn’t able to sew much at all so getting back into it I saw how the Big 4 changed the patterns and it freaked me out. I did a lot of adjustments and couldn’t figure out what and why the patterns changed so much. My sister and I discussed this and she figured we needed to take the finished garment measurements into account. It was still a little confusing to me until I watched this video. Wow!!!!!! Thank you so much. Your explanation turned on that light bulb for me. I’ve been subscribing and watching your videos for quite a while and your fantastic. Thank you again.

I enjoy your videos and am learning more and more from them. I enjoy teaching myself but still need some help. I have bought a lot of patterns but you helped me look at them more and more at what I should have done before and not sew things that do not fit. It is either tight or too big. My bust measurement is in between 16 to 18 size. I am not understanding McCall’s pattern M7741. The body measurement part for the bust is 38 for size 16 and 40 for size 18. This is where, I get real lost. The finished garment measurements - measurement at bustline is 381/2 for size 10 and 40 for size 12. I bought sizes 14 to 22. Did I purchase the wrong size? I think, I bought a lot of patterns in the wrong sizes because I started to check for the finished garment measurements - bustline. Please help. Thank you. God bless.

Thank you Brittany. very informative! I am always eager to learn More about sewing. Also if possible could you zoom in a little closer when you discuss pattern measurements.

Will you please consider doing a sew-a-long for McCalls M7604? I'm brand new to sewing. The McCalls CZcams channel says this is a great pattern to start with, but I can't find a sew-a-long for it. I'm a little nervous to start & having someone walk through the steps of a first project as I go along would be great! (Your hair is beautiful!)

You know what's funny? I've been watching you for a while now and just realized you didn't do a "pattern reading" video.....well thanks for this one also!

Thanks for the reminder to measure yourself and check the size. I just realized I bought a MISSES pattern!!! Good to know I won't be fitting into this *laughing crying*

I have found that some patterns that don't have the finished measurements on the envelope are on the pattern pieces.

Hi Brittany. Great informative video. I too have been sewing for a while but learned the hard way about sizing and patterns lol.
Also, when patterns state cotton blends, does that include Ankara fabric? Thanks and looking forward to the series. :)
