I just love his energy. Actors can have so much fun with this role as guiteau is portrayed as ambitious and crazy, and it's so entertaining to watch

I really liked the balladeer as well, his subtle facial expressions were great.

Assassins was brilliant because we know these people are twisted Assassins is told from the Assassins point of view and that's what makes it so chilling

Having just discovered Assassins a few months ago and having difficulty finding good quality clips to indulge my obsession with the show, I'm so glad you posted this. Charles Guiteau is a man I'm fascinated by, since he's so zany and enigmatic and by all standards should not have made any imprint on history due to his relative obscurity before the assassination of President James Garfield. You embodied the character perfectly and I got goosebumps with your delivery of some of the lines. ("Tomorrow you wont be ignored!" Is a good example) Just an overall excellent performance of a part I can only dream of one day playing, sir, and good on you for your amazing acting.

Guiteau from my understanding most matches what we would now call narcissistic personality disorder, if you have read Spitzka's account he wasn't just a zany daffy guy as this version, but this makes good entertainment, not much entertaining about npd.

@@Gee-xb7rt Oh, you're absolutely right. I've done some pretty extensive reading on Guiteau, as extensive as I could get with someone who isn't well known, and I didn't mean zany as in breaking out in song and cracking jokes, but rather his rants in court, his insistence on being well liked, and his sleeping with a prostitute to testify for his divorce, etc. When saying he embodied the character of Guiteau well I mostly meant the Sondheim Guiteau, which is, you're right, a very exaggerated version of the assassin. Thanks for the input, though!

I have heard of Booth, Guiteau, and Czolgosz. I remember learning that there had been an attempt on FDR's life, but I didn't know of Zangara. I lived through Oswald, Fromme, Moore, and Hinckley. I also lived through Samuel Byck, but I had never heard of him until I saw "Assassins" with Mario Cantone as Byck. I think I would like to know more about Byck, followed by Zangara, since those are the two I really don't know much about.

I found this video as I was looking for the Broadway version of Ballad of Guiteau to add to my playlist of Sondheim breakdown numbers, and I gotta say, I really enjoy your performance as Charlie. Especially when you mirror (is that the right term?) the Balladeer's movements-- or would he be mirroring yours since it's assumed he's mimicking what happened irl? 😋
I have to ask though, were you guys mic'd? There are parts where your voices seem drowned out by the music, or your voices drown out each other.

Hi! I saw your videos from your production of Assassins at the Ephrata Performing Arts Center and was wondering if you could possibly send me the whole show? I've been wanting to show my history class for ages but the only version I can find is of the Broadway from 2004 and it's not very good quality wise and I don't think it'd be effective to show them this version. If you can't, I understand, but it'd be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for writing! Its a great show to look at for your history class--Sondheim was really very thorough when he was researching this show.
Unfortunately, there's no way for me to send you the entire show though. It would violate copyright laws. We actors got a copy of a DVD just for our own use.
Check out some other channels--and I know that the new broadway recording has some of Sam Byck's monologues...
Let me know if there's anything I can do for you!
