NOTE: See this layout in person at this year's 40th National Narrow Gauge Convention in St. Louis, Missouri from September 2-5, 2020. Victor Smith's City Edge layout will be on the tour for the home visits. This is a must see. Pictures doesn't capture the realism and exquisite detail that Vic put into the streets, buildings and weathering appearance.
The City Edge is an HO 1:87th scale Model Railroad created and built by Vic Smith. The city section of the layout is 25ft long by 3ft in depth. The city is made up of multiple model kits including kitbashed, custom and scratch built structures that have all been recreated and casted in very durable black urethane. The strength of the urethane provided the durability needed to withstand the multiple hand and spray paint applications, along with several sessions of saturating alcohol staining procedures to achieve the gritty weathered brick and mortar appearance. The streets are made from Woodland Scenic "smooth-it" paving plaster poured at 1/4" on top of 1/2" homosote insulation board. The sidewalks are made from a wide variety of plastic with the whole street scene then painted with several coats of concrete and asphalt colored paint. After all expansion joints and stress cracks are scribed into the streets and sidewalks, the layout took several harsh grimy black alcohol washes which provided the beat-up weathered and worn appearance of the street. There are more than 500 individual lights, including LED and incandescent bulbs to light up the signs, streets and building interiors. The bridge scene consists of three 225 ft (scale) double track spans made in brass and imported by Overland Models. The layout in controlled by Digitrax DCC Command center for control of all Locomotives. This is Vic’s 3rd home layout and started creating it in 1996.

Fabulous layout. Not only is it extremely well done but it sports its own personality. The street running aspect makes it unique. Can you imagine the impact the addition of the Faller Car system would have here? The cityscape and roadways are so well done they’re ideal for at least a partial Faller enhancement.
WOW! I believe you have my number 1 favorite layout. Day time, night time, lightning; animated signs, many trains. What an inspiration. Incredible! That had to take years to build!
Very detailed and realistic scene. The 'live' sound of the trains and environment make it really come to life! Love the night scene, with the yellow neon light and the wet streets.

This is my favorite train set in the world. This is one of my favorite things in the world period. It always makes me happy.
Since you got the siren screeching in the background, you should get an ambulance and a cop car with flashing lights ,cruising down main street while dodging the train in the dark of the night.

At 47 years old, I still turn into a 3 year old kid, watching the NORFOLK AND WESTERN roll on the old VIRGINIAN LINE in my HOMETOWN of NORFOLK VIRGINIA.
Today living next door in VIRGINIA BEACH, I still LOVE to watch the NORFOLK SOUTHERN coal drags roll in and out of LAMBERTS POINT in NORFOLK, or if I'm in CHESAPEAKE VIRGINIA, watching the STACK TRAINS at PORTLOCK YARD.
Anyways, THANK YOU for creating such a WONDERFUL LAYOUT!

Fantastic effort, the night time effects are excellent, all it needs is CGI people inhabiting the layout. I muted the tunes and played it back at 0.5 speed for an impressive feeling of being there.

This is an amazing layout that I have seen progress in its infrastructure and photographic, audio, and video presentation. This could be any of the five largest urban areas of the U.S.: Chicago, L.A., New York, Washington D.C., and Houston. Very cool. The street scenes remind me of the scenes in the beginning and ending credits of Welcome Back Kotter or the album cover of Shakedown Street by the Grateful Dead.

Wow, the metal music in the beginning was off putting, however made sense as I watched. It’s been awhile since I’ve been in the city. I’ve seen mostly countryside, mountain and desert scenes on model railroading. Those were impressive, however, this was another level. I enjoyed it very much highly impressive to say the least. Thank you for posting. I will be replaying a few times.

Hi! I just flew into Knuffingen Airport, I’ve got a 48 hour layover while maintenance repairs the jack screw for the elevators on the FedEx A300. What’s fun to do while we’re here? Who knows when we’ll see another stretch of down time this long again!
BTW and FYI: One hour of regular human time equals two hours of miniature time! So this time tomorrow we will have had two days here in mini-city, while in your world it’s been one day. Don’t think about it too much, it’ll keep you awake at night!
