In this tutorial I am taking you on my learning journey in a new medium. I will be making mistakes, so you don't have to! I am going for a 3D landscape using texture paste. The paste is made with a mix of spackle, plaster of paris, wood glue, gesso and white paint. I will need to make adjustments which is why I haven't shared exact recipe yet. It's not quite there.

Tip for using joint compound/plaster. The trick is to build it up in thin layers, allowing it to dry fully to prevent cracking so much.

Hi Gina, I have been playing around with joint compound for a few months, just got tired of the same old and its a good way to reuse old canvases that I did not like and I have sold a few of these texture paintings already. One I did using the balloon smash and it turned out beautiful, so many options playing with texture

I'm thinking about getting into stuff like this to relax after my last landscape gave me tendonitis from working for almost 20 hours straight to finish it one day and forgetting to eat. I did that a lot, so want to try less laborious projects.
Oh yes, I resemble that remark. Completely lose track of time, forget to take breaks, do my hands/wrists damage. (Not usually with the fluid art, because that only has a finite working time, but with other art/craft things, yes.)
I love these tactile works. Plaster of Paris is too finicky for me it dries too fast and always cracks on me. I follow Sergio Aranda who does a lot of this. I’m still learning. Drywall compound comes in so many types gives you flexibility which for me is good I’m so slow. I’m intrigued to see how this comes out with your special signature touch I know it will look amazing.
I agree about the "creative funk" -- there's stuff I can do that looks nice, but I get BORED with the same old, same old. (Otherwise I would be painting planets all the time. I like planets, but not all the time.) I'm wondering if this texture technique wouldn't work better on a wood panel rather than a (flexible) canvas; the rigid wood might make it less likely for it to crack. The mountains texture is great.
