He told us that during training, one of Franz´s instructors hat told him that "You follow the rules of war for you - not for your enemy. You fight by rules to keep your humanity". You fight by rules to keep your humanity, that is a powerful statement. Saluting your enemy is probably something of the most honorable any soldier can do.

    Here in Germany Franz Stigler was virtually unknown before the Sabaton song got released. And many of the people who knew of him, and quite a lot of them weren't even nazis, considered him a traitor, my grandma included because her uncle got killed during that bombing attack. I never felt that way, I always thought the Stigler showed more bravery that day than I could ever muster.

    • @warhammer5690
      @warhammer5690 Před 3 lety +40

      Sad they felt that. Knowing that Rodel trained and commanded him in Afrika and was adamant that killing an enemy in a parachute would result in Rodel killing that pilot himself. Herr Stigler said that wrecked B17 was the parachute for those 9 surviving airmen. Safe journeys.

    • @inside98
      @inside98 Před 3 lety +41

      I mean, I can understand the feelings.
      An interceptor's role is to defend the people on the ground. If you do not fulfill that role, the saved bomber crew will climb into a new bomber and kill more of the people you were supposed to protect.
      Don't get me wrong, I do not consider Stigler a traitor. I think he made a human decision in an very inhuman time, but I can understand why people who were alive during the war felt that way.
      It is really strange to listen to these stories. It seems like a different reality.
      Some of my family never returned from Stalingrad and my mom told me about the birthday card her aunt send to her husband. It returned with a stamp on it "An Absender zurück, gefallen für Großdeutschand" - "Return to sender, died for Greater Germany".

    Super reaction tank.
    I was born in Germany in 1979 and grew up here. I learned a lot about the Second World War in school. But the real understanding of the atrocities and the effects on the generations that followed only came after school, when I got to know the subject a little better. The best stories are the ones about mercy. It doesn't matter if it's a song or a film. All the crap about war wouldn't be necessary if people would slowly start to understand that we are all ONE species. And would not chase after wealth and power, but would care about the well-being of ALL people. So....I wipe away the rest of my tears and listen to Meadows of Heaven by Nightwish. Because I'm in a melancholic mood right now.

    This is without a doubt my favorite Sabaton song, & I get choked up every time I listen to it. It is definitely an ultimate display of respect, honor, & humanity on the field of battle, & Franz Stigler is absolutely a hero who deserve this recognition. It is much harder to show humanity & compassion in war than it is to follow orders & take out your target. Of course, that choice is not so easy nowadays because not every enemy has a code of honor that they abide by.

  • @Ancient_War

    My father fought in WWII flying C-47s dropping paratroopers into European combat zones. He met Charlie Brown some time around when this incident occurred. The crew of Ye Olde Pub might have been ordered not to speak of this incident, but others were there when the B-17 landed and knew what had happened. The story quietly spread among pilots. He rarely spoke about the war, but he did tell me this story. Several times. It was a merciful, chivalrous act in an unmerciful war and made a huge impact on him. “No Bullets Fly” is one of my favorite Sabaton songs and I love cherry-picking reactions to it. I appreciated how you read up on it and so knew a few basic facts, also that you added some facts on screen. Thank you.

    It's always such a treat to see a new video on Sabaton Saturday! I love following along on your journey discovering this amazing band. This reaction was just so heartfelt, I don't think anyone can watch this for the first time without some waterworks. Or the second... or third.. :P And I think you're the only reactor so far that I've seen that figured out that the people shown in the last bit are relatives so good catch there! :)

    Your Sabaton reaction-series is an awesome project. I hope that the band spots your efforts to analyze thheir songs, show your genuine feelings about them and promoting theiir history channel and give you some sort of sign of recognition. Your videos are that good. no doubt about it. Keep the spirits up, enjoy all the time you can get with your precious Ingrid. I know I'm sucking up to you, but it's heartfelt and tou are probably humble enough not to deride me for reacting to the reactor. Thamks for making my life and music experience a bit better than I can manage by myself.

    This story, this song, and even moreso, this video always bring me to tears. There are hundreds of inspiring stories in the Sabaton catalog (many of which also bring out tears), I think the fact that Oberleutnant Stigler wound up living not far from me, and his daughter is in the FB group just makes it so much more real.
    I only watch two "reaction channels"; yours and The Charismatic Voice. SO much more than just watching someone watch a video, and not contribute any substance.

    A long time Sabaton fan here. I've seen many reactions on their videos and I gotta say that I can appreciate the effort that you've looked into the subject deeper. Many reactors just seem to assume things about the substance behind the songs without knowing the whole context. Anyways, great video! Liked.

    A few days ago I stumbled over the animated story video by coincidence in another reaction video. The song I knew before already, but, damn it, I never realized the touching story behind the lyrics. Then I saw the video and I was completely blown away - I still am after watching for several times. This is such a wonderful story. It definitely landed on rank #1 of my personal Sabaton top ten's list.
    I did not expect the end at all. I was already stoked by the first meeting of Charlie and Franz after 40 years, but that Franz's grandson listened to the song - without knowing that Sabaton did THIS story, and never ever met the band before turning the story into music - and shew his mom, who is Franz's daughter, that got me.
    Thanks for doing this one.
    Greetings from Germany to the USA.

Ironically today on the way home from giving my daughter a ride home from work the host on the radio station playing in the car was talking about his 14 year old son.
