As someone from a highly unionized country, this was very interesting to hear about!

I think what was getting missed here is that by and large the progressive positions that make up a lot of the issues in the democratic party are somewhat technical and difficult to communicate to mass audiences. This has been born out in the climate change debate, but also in a whole grip of other issues, from the so called "defund the police" etc. What defund the police really comes down to is not get rid of police, but adequately fund and utilize the other tools in the tool box for creating safer and healthier and productive communities. That's hard to fit on a bumper sticker and it's harder to try to explain to mass audiences. It's difficult to walk people through the numbers and the studies and all the evidence of why certain policies work and should be adopted. This I think has been the main issue with Democrats in the last 50 years. Unions create a ground level support for that. It goes right to peoples kitchen tables, their jobs, and lets them understand some issues and gets them enthusiastic for that. The GOP and broader conservativism have been reliant on feelings instead of policy for decades and so their marketing has been far more effective. Fear of losing something, fear of change is really easy to tap into. It's way harder to build something complex and ultimately better than it is to pander to the way things used to be.

Your party sucks ass at making slogans. Or rallying the masses for that matter. As much as Trump has been a hotheaded idiot, he knew how to get people to talk about him and make people remember some of his ideas. If you think of "This place used to be better, lets return to the good old days", does "Make America great again" come to your mind or "Build Back Better"? Theres no reasonable way for someone outside to interpret "defund" as "change the way they spend their budget". You would need to have others tell you that, or do what 99% of every voter in every country will never do: Read the agenda.
As for the measure itself: many do demand for reduced funds because "the police doesnt need military grade weapons". I demand higher standards. Its easier to trust someone who's been training for years, even with military service, with full auto shit than hillbillies who've just had lectures for what? 4 months?

7:50, exactly, the head honchos at the Unions only care about themselves and not about organizing workers. Every ground level organizer I've meet has told me numerous stories of the big organization selling out smaller shops to give the big shops better deals. They don't care about expansion. They don't care about labor rights, just their own egos.

I honestly really appreciate the smaller chunks each nailed in on one topic, this is honestly how you entice new people on yt to a politics podcast: smaller discussion, about one current issue, to minimize the time between the initial click on the video and the meat, I just go to the website for full pods

5:20, WRONG, they do not get all the benefits union, they don't get legal representation nor are they part of the rain day fund if a strike takes place. It was a continuous fee for the collective bargaining process, which doesn't happen continuously. That is, in practice, a compelled union due by the state to be a state employee.

Unions haven't been anti-immigration since NAFTA. If the jobs that cheap immigrant labor might undercut have been offshored anyway, why would they be?
