But poodles are the best, smartest, funniest, most affectionate, healthiest, merriest, most athletic pranksters that ever graced the canine species. Our present poodle, quite on her own, has even trained our other dog to fetch, sit up like a kangaroo, and do other tricks as well. She also knows how to open any door she can reach.

I love the WKC dog show... but it has always bothered me that you really only see black and white poodles get anywhere. Poodles come in a large variety of coat colors; black, white, cream, apricot, red, silver, blue, gray, brown, "cafe au lait", and silver beige... and those are just the solid coat, not parti-color coats. But it's only ever black and white that make it to the show rings... a real shame.

Poodles actually haven’t changed much. The reason they are shaved like that is to ensure they have the correct structure as per the breed. Once they are titled they are shaved down anyway. And these show dogs are also competing in performance stuff anyway. The purpose of this show is judge the physical structure of the dog and to see if they move wells. This is why you see the judge opening the mouth to look at the teeth.Once they are titled than they can be bred. It’s important that only structurally sound dogs are bred so no it’s not just a show dog. If you want to see badly bred dogs go buy from a backyard breeding.

Once they finish their title almost all of them are then clipped into a lower maintenance cut (like the ones you had). If the haircut looks "goofy" to you it's a pretty good sign that you've never shown a poodle in a conformation ring.
I have a standard poodle, but not a show poodle. I tell the groomer, she is a country poodle, digging for squirrels gophers with her Labrador brother. Both are so affectionate. Love both breeds. I did like the one cut with two puffs of hair on the back legs of one poodle that didn’t make the cut. I could see me having to pluck out stickers every night if Kona’s hair was that long. This was fun to watch. I couldn’t decide who was better than who.
This has got to be the worst filming of a standard poodle show, this guy has done nothing but constantly been in the cameras view primping and preening like an old seagull and viewing the other dogs was not even pleasurable
They're checking jaw alignment in the poodle; it must be perfect or early tooth loss can result. They also check the relaxed angle and alignment of the neck. That , too, needs to be flawless, or the poodle could be prone to collapse of the trachea just from wearing a dog collar. Happily, poodles are now judged almost entirely for criteria that ensure their best health. They are a very healthy breed.

the hair-dos are actually for a specific purpose -it's to keep their vital organs warm when they retrieve birds when taken out hunting (/typically like for duck) - despite looking 'fru-fru', they're actually specifically bred to be hunting dogs. (Birds in particular) Someday I'd like to have a Poodle and to go Bird Hunting :-3 bring in some extra food

None of those poodles have ever retrieved a duck in a pond. Yes one knows they had to keep their chest warm but they never had ridiculous pom-poms
