  • ( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2016 Ram ProMaster commercial van has a 3.0L EcoDiesel engine, but it's not the V6 you may be used to. It's a 4-cylinder and it's backed by a 6-speed automated manual transmission. Check out this towing preview.

    It might be worth noting that this is the Iveco / Fiat Commercial diesel that you would find in the Mitsubishi Fuso class 3,4 and 5 cabover commercial trucks in the US. It is a real workhorse. There is a lot of freight moving around the world behind that engine. I'm still not sure about this automated manual transmission, but they are starting to make their way into the commercial courier market so if they end up being a horror story it won't be a secret for long.

    With gas so cheap now, and diesel not too far from it, the payback on the enormous premium for the diesel is a long, long time and many miles down the road. If gas were way up there like not too long ago - certainly a different argument. But the gas version's the way to go economically unless towing's a requirement.

      @kipamore Před 7 lety +2

      Unloaded, that thing will get 28mpg diesel. I own 2 gas promasters, 22mpg under ideal conditions, down to 19 in winter. Diesel is 60 cents more expensive right now, and that engine costs 4000-5000 extra. Run the numbers, and the gasser is a much better option. More importantly, when it comes time for repairs, any boob that can work on a minivan can work on the gasser, but you are married not only to the dealer for the diesel, but married to the Ram Commercial franchise dealer, of which there's rarely more than 1 per city. Not only that, but just because the sign says that dealer is trained to work on this oddball engine, doesn't mean they know a damn thing about it. On the gasser, your parts will be coming from Autozone, on the diesel your parts will be coming from Turkey. I have 226k on one of my vans, 200k on the other. I've had some problems, but they mostly have been rock solid.

    • @mibars
      @mibars Před 8 lety

      +AMGV Media I will never get why pickups are preffered over vans in US: You can't really carry much stuff around in a pickup out in the elements, they have small beds compared to the footprints, adding a top creates quite small cargo area that is rarely sealed from outside. They are good for towing or off-roading though, something rarely seen in a van and modern pickups received car-like interiors. Is it all about the looks of the pickup?

    • @dragonbutt
      @dragonbutt Před 8 lety

      +AMGV Media Because this will haul as much as a pickup, in an enclosed space.
      Its pretty much like saying "Why not buy an F150 instead of a Sprinter".

    • @FM4AMGV
      @FM4AMGV Před 8 lety

      mibars there are caps that you can put on a pickup, and some pickups come with 8 foot beds on them. that and they are 4 wheel drive, have V8 options, tow more and the engine isn't tucked so far back as they are in a van, so things aren't as hard to get to

    • @mibars
      @mibars Před 8 lety +1

      Those "caps" is what I was referring to as "tops" and I haven't seen one in which one can easily stand or have a usable side door. 8 foot is usually the longest option in a pickup. Just about the shortest one you can get in a van, while van is shorter overall

    • @dragonbutt
      @dragonbutt Před 8 lety

      AMGV Media
      A V8 is going to kill your fuel economy, and you dont need 4wd in what is essentially a delivery van. The promaster has it as an option though, and its pentastar V6 nearly makes 300 horsepower, which is more than enough power.
      And as mibars said, you can have a longer cargo space than offered for a pickup, for a shorter overall van.

    Seriously!? 42 000USD for the 3 liter Diesel!? That´s insane! Even the base price of 30 000USD is much! Are they plated with gold or something? In Norway, a country known for expensive cars, the RAV4 has the same base price in Norway as the Sequoia has in USA.
    BUT! Over here the RAM is called Peugeot Boxer. We can buy it as a Fiat and a Citroen aswell, but most of them are Peugeots. The base price for the same engine version of this is 42000USD over here. (Not included Mva. Companies don´t pay Mva.) I know this is base price, but that is with high roof and second from longest body. The bottom of the range, low roof and short body cost 31 200USD(Still no Mva, also 2.2 Diesel). How come they are so expensive over there? For the 3.0 we pay like 12 000USD in taxes. Still it´s just pennies more than what you pay. We have had two of these for our company and they both have literally been in and out of repair for a complete here now. We have one sitting at a Dodge dealer under warranty for 3 months and they still cannot get the parts for the hydraulic cooling unit. Bad deal. You deserve a class action lawsuit over this one.

    • @keithwelton
      @keithwelton Před 7 lety +1

      Jason Carpp "Eco" is used often in describing diesel because Diesel engines are much more efficient than gasoline engines and therefore produce far less Co2 whilst requiring less oil to be used to fuel the vehicle. Less oil needed so better for the environment hence "Eco"

    • @jasoncarpp7742
      @jasoncarpp7742 Před 7 lety

      How is that possible? To be fuel efficient and better for the environment? I like to breathe clean air as much as anyone, but I was told when I was growing up that gasoline burns cleaner than diesel, and therefore, is better for the environment.

    • @keithwelton
      @keithwelton Před 7 lety +1

      Jason Carpp The laws of thermodynamics show that Diesel engines are far more efficient than gasoline engines, it is the reason diesels were originally developed. As others have posted about this video this van will give you about 28 mpg compared to its gasoline equivalent only giving you about 22 mpg which is a 27% improvement. Gasoline engines produce far more of the deadly gas CO, carbon monoxide than diesel and produce very small particulates which it is believed can cross into your bloodstream unlike the larger soot particulates produced by pre DEF fitted diesels. Diesels are far from perfect but given their lower use of fossil fuels must be better overall for the environment than gasoline.Here in the UK there is no such thing as a gasoline, petrol, engined commercial vehicle on sale, everyone uses diesel. Currently about half of all car sales are diesel engined in the UK.

      Powerful enough anyway. It is a van, not a sports car so blistering acceleration is not a requirement.

      +davide30541 The ProMaster is built in Mexico. The gasoline V6 and its mating 6 speed automatic are made in the US, while the 3.0 diesel with the robotic 6 speed is a Fiat Commercial/Iveco powertrain that comes from Italy.

      +Mike Zeke The Econoline is a dinosaur, it's heavier, RWD, and it's powered by a much larger engine. Of course you'll see better mileage, but that's not an apples to apples comparison. If your company had a Pentastar and an EcoDiesel in your fleet, that would be a fair comparison.
