  • The Toltec civilization, known for its significant influence on later Mesoamerican cultures, created a legacy that endures through its art, architecture, and mythology. The heart of this civilization was the city of Tula, also known as Tollan, located in present-day Hidalgo, Mexico. Tula was a center of power and culture from around 900 to 1150 CE and is considered a major pre-Columbian archaeological site. The Toltecs’ contributions to Mesoamerican civilization are profound, and their influence can be seen in the art and architecture of the Aztecs and other cultures that followed them.
Tula was strategically located in the Tula River valley, an area characterized by its fertile lands and abundant resources. The city's location allowed the Toltecs to control trade routes and establish a powerful state that extended its influence across much of Mesoamerica. The geography of the region, with its combination of highlands and valleys, provided a diverse environment for agriculture, trade, and cultural exchange. This advantageous position enabled Tula to become a thriving center of political, economic, and religious activity.
