  • This is how I installed my dash cam/reverse camera with completely hidden wiring on my 1999 Toyota Camry. I have no electrical/automotive experience but was able to figure this out with a few days of research so let me know if this is helpful.

    Amongst all video I watch, this is the only one I really understand. Great job n you make this simple and doable for people like me who have no knowledge about electrical wiring inside a car

    You say you have no automotive or electrical experience, but I've seen some pretty horrible installs from so-called "experts." Nice job overall!
    As someone who has installed countless car stereos and electrical accessories to cars, I feel compelled to point out that you've shown a lot of great tips here.
    Your power lead splicing to the reverse light circuit is the best way to tap into that circuit without the "official" tap connector, and probably more secure than a tap connector too!
    You are also absolutely right about using a QUALITY electrical tape - I refuse to use anything other than 3M brand, it's the only electrical tape I've found to be durable enough to withstand the weather and temperature extremes found in automotive applications. Most of the cheaper brands lose adhesion quickly, and the Dollar Store variety rolls tend to be made up of several small strips that often end right in the middle of use. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing the RIGHT WAY the FIRST TIME.
    If I had to nitpick anything, it would be a lack of a grommet where the camera's cable passes through the trunk lid. The silicone you planned on squirting in the hole will probably be good enough to prevent damage to the wire...
    How many miles on your Camry? Mine's at 358,000 right now. I hope your baby gives you many many miles of satisfaction.

      Speaking of using a grommet, do you have a link to buy one?

    Thank you for simplifying the reverse wire connection process for me. Minus the unnecessary editorial. Running the cables will probably be the easiest thing to do.

    Loved the simplicity of this! Most video tutorials by men were confusing as hell, didn't go into detail, i was confused by what i was seeing exactly, and most of the time skipped over how to install that red wire entirely. I got a honda civic and been trying to figure out my own way of slinking the wire through my trunk. And I just needed to see how someone else installed their camera on the outside.

    I have to install a similar backup camera on a 2010 Camry, but as it partially obscures the word “Texas” on the license plate, I have to move the plate down some to eliminate that. Ugh.

    In the splicing video, the comments say that electrical tape might not be enough to keep the wires from degrading. Have you had any issues? I live somewhere with lots of frost so I'm a bit worried...

    • @laureng3526
      @laureng3526  Před 2 lety

      A metal drill bit attached to a power drill. Would recommend to go slow and make the hole as small as possible so that it is easier to seal.

    • @anthonygarcia3922
      @anthonygarcia3922 Před 2 lety

      @@laureng3526 okay, I tried doing that just now, but how big are we supposed to make the hole? I noticed that yours is kind of small, but I can't get the wire in cause of the video/audio puts. Did you have to make the hole bigger to fit it in?

    • @laureng3526
      @laureng3526  Před 2 lety

      @@anthonygarcia3922 it'll depend on your model of camera, but I made mine just big enough so that it could fit through. The end of my wires had a connector that was bigger in diameter, so the hole also had to fit that
