Hi Dragon - Thanks for all your cool videos. I've just been setting up the Mikro 3 to use in Midi Mode with Logic. I've managed to configure the Mikro using the Controller Editor fine - except for one pad that I can't get to make a sound. Pad 5 should play E1 but no matter what I try mapping it to - I can't get it to make a sound. Any idea why that would be?
- Have just noticed it does make a sound - but only if I long press another pad and then hit it 😐
Very appreciated!
This man is a genius 🫡
Got it, mate! Ready for the next lesson 🙌
thanks for the video mate
thank you!!!!!!!!
You re the best
Thank you so much for this. Really useful
How do you choke a specific note with other notes re pad 3,4 and 8 for you open and close high hats?
It depends on which software you’re using. In most drum emulator softwares like Addictive Drums, this will automatically be enabled, but if you’re using samples in a DAW or some other software then it totally depends. I’d recommend googling how to choke samples in your specific software!
I found a use for the black keys surrounding the pads. For example my upper-left pad is a crash cymbal (note 57-A2). Now I programmed the 'Pad Mode' key to 58-A#2 (muted hit) with value 1. It kinda sounds like muting the cymbal with your hand.
I like this setup and it does makes sense. I’m definitely gonna try this layout. What about other instruments besides drums?
Good video. Had a feeling you were doubling up on sounds. I do the same thing, albeit with different placements.
Thank you for the information dude, you're a homie for this.
I was surprised to find it fatiguing playing the kick drum/snare on this layout but I'm going to continue to practice to see how it develops.
You are helping me approach my playing with more discipline, I am very appreciative.
Do you have a pad layout to share for when you use acquired samples?
I’m glad you found it helpful! If your fingers get fatigued it’s probably because they haven’t developed significant strength and endurance yet, most people’s middle fingers especially take some time to get strong and isolated.
In our online Academy, we have tons of finger independence lessons designed to strengthen each finger separately and then use them together, so check that out on our website if you’re interested!
I’m not quite sure what you mean by acquired samples. Could you elaborate?
@@DragonFingerDrums I may give these more detailed lessons a try, thank you for that.
I am interested in how you set up a layout when you're not doing a virtual "drum set", but instead incorporate other sounds. I will have to do my own digging.
What would you say are the 8 essential drum sounds to keep on a program to make room for other sample oddities?
Thanks again! No worries if you don't have time to reply in detail.
I really enjoyed your Fingerdrumming World Championship performance by the way. You crushed it brotha
I actually only use an acoustic drum kit, because for me, finger drumming is a genuine percussion instrument, and an extension of my playing as a drummer.
So I don’t ever use other samples or melodic elements on the pads, I just play drums with my fingers. If that’s your thing, go for it! It’s just not an area I’ve explored with the pads.
i dont have the same sounds you do, i dont have the rimshot. so its a bit hard to get startet here.
How do I find rim shot in drum kit on Maschine? Its not commonly available
Any chance you could go over a hip hop pad set up? Picking good samples is kinda up to the artist i think but i always enjoy seeing someones thought process behind where they place them on the pads.
I use the exact same setup for all styles of music. That's why I love this pad layout, because it's just as versatile as an acoustic drum kit! A normal drummer wouldn't need to rearrange their drums to play different genres of music, and I wanted to achieve the same thing with my standard layout.
@@DragonFingerDrums Can i ask you which drum program you favor?
Is there a reason why we’re unable to save this video to a playlist other than the button is missing?
Hi just wanna ask if you can setup your pads on an iPad? I like your videos btw. I really learn a lot from it thanks 👌
Thank you! I'm not sure if it's possible to connect the Maschine to an iPad, but I think there might be other pad controllers out there that can run on an iPad. It's worth doing some research, but I also don't think there are any drum emulator softwares that are available on iPad, which is essential if you want to play realistic finger drumming in this style. A computer is definitely the safest bet for now!
Subscribed. Do you prefer your Maschine flat on a table or in your lap? I see you doing both with good results.
For stage performances I love the snare stand, when I'm playing at home I usually prefer a table for the stability. I really only play in my lap when a good table/camera angle is unavailable, for me the angle is less than ideal, it takes more effort to play at high speeds and with full power.
is there a way i could re-map the pads? for example having my kicks on the right side and hi hats on the left? and not having to re-map every time i load up a kit?
Yes. You can do one of 2 things. 1 Setup your pad device so that the midi notes each pad triggers is remapped to the drum hits you want and save that setup. 2 Use a virtual device (program or plugin or even the midi setup in your main best making software) as an intermediary layer that will remap the pad assignments to the sounds you like. Be sure to save the config and load it each time you want to play.
How do you have your sensitivity set? You get nice ghost notes on the snare in other videos so you can't have it too hard.
I use maximum pad sensitivity, with a linear velocity curve for the most accurate dynamics
@@DragonFingerDrums I wanted to try that but I only see the 1 menu of options in the controller editor for that. Goes from Soft 2 up to Linear, then up to Hard 2
Are the sound in the machine or do you always need a computer?
How would you set pads for a 16 pads : 2 ranges of 8 each ? I have the Launchkey mini mk3 :/
I've never tried a 2x8 pad controller so it's difficult to say. It's definitely a lot easier to have a 4x4 grid so your fingers can easily reach multiple drums at once. The simplest answer I can give is to recommend just getting a 4x4 controller, and until then, use just my first 2 rows and maybe add a couple of cymbals or toms on the end to make a 2x6 layout.
Do you use native software to play? Or a daw with a drum plugin?
I use Addictive Drums for most of my finger drumming! But there’s a lot of good options out there, including MODO Drum, NI Abbey Road Drums, EZ Drummer, etc.
@@DragonFingerDrums daw or standalone?
How do you map 2 same kicks and 2 same hi-hats in MODO Drum? It seems it only allows to assign only one note per type. Could not find out. Would appreciate your help!
Hmm, I haven't actually used MODO Drum in a while. In Addictive Drums and Steven Slate Drums all you have to do is press the MIDI Learn button for your sound two different times, and hit a new pad each time. If MODO Drum doesn't let you do this, then I'd recommend just choosing 2 different variations of the same sound (like 2 different hi-hat articulations). Although I seem to remember using double kicks when I used MODO Drum before, so I feel like there must be a way to double map.
Thank you. Yes setting up different but similar articulations is a good idea. And it sounds good too, adds some more life. Another solution I guess is to map controller itself to have same notes on two pads. Maybe that is the way you made it then.
Im curious, because I'm left handed. Do you think I could just mirror the layout and that's it? I see that you use your left hand for basic kick and snare...
Yes, you totally can! I go into more detail around pad placements and fingering positions in my Foundation Course, including a left-handed pad setup template: dragonfingerdrums.com/foundation
@@DragonFingerDrums I'll definitely check that out, thanks!
@irkennalpha hello bro ! did you change the arrangement of your pads finally?? I am also left-handed and if I configure the pad like the logic of Dragon in left-handed it is equivalent to using the bass drum with the right hand while left-handed people use the left foot ^^ I don't understand the logic
but I admit that having to do the charley on the left and the bass drum at the same time also on the left hand with your hands seems complicated
@@pronostrike I think his logic is right just re arrange the pads in a mirror like shape and follow the instructions, it is kinda complicated fo follow because you'll have to mirror the things he does on the video, but I think it's the best way. It worked well for me.
