Barshim and Tamberi were best friends even before this, to the point of standing in the other's wedding, because they went through the same devastating injury and recovery process. When Tamberi was ready to give up, Barshim didn't let him -and that was when they were merely competitors. It forged a brotherhood and then they tied for gold in the proceeding Olympics. With Katie Moon and Nina Kennedy, Katie ended up being interviewed about it on a bunch of Australian morning shows about the decision to take the tie. It was a massive deal in Oz, and both Katie and Nina felt that continuing genuinely wasn't safe -their legs were just too dead. For those that want to see a clear winner... Watch men's pole vault and Mondo Duplantis. Otherwise... I would have forgotten the winner of these two events a shortly after. Instead, particularly in the case of Barshim/Tamberi, not just track fans but fans of the Olympics in general will likely be re-living that tie for decades to come.
I’m still cracking up at the early pole vaulter who didn’t compete because his mom was worried. Early modern Olympics were wild, safety-wise. I think the swimming was held in open water one year and some swimmers caught typhoid fever.

Katie has explained the pole vault jump off as partially due to a safety concern. When you’re jumping that high there’s a much larger risk of injury if you are super fatigued, which they clearly both were. Plus she already has an Olympic gold medal so I’m sure sharing a WC gold didn’t feel like a huge compromise
This high jump comp was so special, Tamberi had gone through SO MUCH to injury. Barshim and Tamberi are close too after competing against each other on the international circuit for years. They push the event so much.
I love the sharing of the gold! They say the person who gets silver is sometimes sadder than the one who gets bronze. I’d be so mad if I had gold the lost it because I chose a jump off 😅
The Barkley changed rules on how far you can go, originally it was how many loops you could do, now each loop has a time limit so making the 3 loop target is far tougher as you no longer have the full time to complete them.
There was a jump off in the women's high jump final in the 1997 world championship. Three people had cleared every hight until 1.99 where they all failed out, but one person got it on a fourth attempt getting the gold medal while the two others shared the silver since they didn't get it on their fourth attempt.

The cruelest of tie breaks in sport in recent years was in the cricket world cup final where after 50 overs each (8 hours of play!) The scores were tied 241runs each. Then they have what's called a super over, where both teams bat 6 balls to decide the winner of the world cup which is contested once every four years. A long story short, it came down to the final ball of the super over where New Zealand facing England who scored 15 runs and New Zealand needed 2 runs to win and if a tie was played out, then a countback would happen on how many boundaries (4s,6s) which ended up happening after the New Zealander got run out coming back for the winning run by mere inches! If you're intersted it's 2019 cricket world cup final. It's one of the greatest commentaries you'll ever hear even if you know nothing about cricket!
Well yes the athletes will share if there's a chance since there's nothing to lose expect the respect of some fans. The fact that it happened twice in such a short period of time and important events does make me worried.
it would be great if you could do a video on Marcel Hug, especially given his recent massive world record of 1:15:33 at the Boston Marathon a few days ago. he's awesome. thank you for making these - i always really enjoy them!!
His time doesn't count for WR because Boston is a net downhill course so can't be used for record purposes even more so with wheelchairs as going downhill gives them way more of an advantage. But the time is still great going 2 minutes faster than his previous Boston time including having a crash part way through

Boston has a drop of 460 feet which is 140.2m or just over 3m per km in drop. There is another reason for Boston not able to be a marathon that allows for world records and that is because the start and finish locations are so far apart. The rules state that the start and finish need to be within 50% of the race distance if you drew a straight line between the points, for Boston it is around 39km which is quite far above the 21km needed. There is a list on world athletics website that has every road race if you look up World athletics certified road races then scroll down until you see a link that has the list.

Just imagine if a country lost a world cup final in football/soccer because after 90 minutes of normal play plus extra time, they had to have some kind of kick off to determine the one winner instead of sharing the world cup. Oh wait that's what actually happens in other sports

Where does it say that? I think the Olympics are mainly to make money! But secondarily, it's to display the extent of human ability and to achieve the highest level of competition in the world

Any chance you could have a look at the Barkley Ultra Marathon? It's one of the most wild running events of the year

The Barkley changed rules on how far you can go, originally it was how many loops you could do, now each loop has a time limit so making the 3 loop target is far tougher as you no longer have the full time to complete them.

there are many draws in boxing, from the majority draw, to the split draw, to the unanimous draw. it happens very rarely, but so did this.
