At the school implies some one has gone to school but not for studying purpose. Even if parents have gone to meet their kids' teacher we can say-- His parents are at rhe school

I have the following question - what should we use in these examples: "I've studied English philology at/in university", "I've taken classes in French at/in school"? If "at school" implies location, shouldn't we use "in school" meaning the institution itself? From what I know, we should use "at school" or "at (the?) university", but still I need a further explanation.

in school is more common in Br Eng.

But you don’t know what specific school. So you say she teaches at a school. You don’t know what school she teaches.
