- After our chase with the Union Pacific Big Boy no. 4014 through Nebraska we traveled up to the Black Hills of South Dakota to pay a visit to the Black Hills Central Railroad or also known as 1880 Train to see one of their steam locomotives operate. The locomotive that was running during our visit was a 2-6-6-2T Mallet no. 110. 110 is a saddle tank engine that was built in 1928 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company in Vail, Washington. 110 came to the railroad in 1999 and was restored to operation in 2001 where it now pulls passenger trains on a 10 mile trip from Hill City to Keystone, South Dakota. 110 definitely put on a great for us and if you're ever visiting the Black Hills make sure to hop aboard the 1880 Train as you'll go back in time to when steam locomotives roamed the rails in the state of South Dakota. We hope y'all enjoy!
