Is A Harley Stage 2 Upgrade Worth The Money?

  • In this video, I review the details of doing a Harley Stage 2 Upgrade on my Road Glide Special and answer the question is the juice worth the squeeze. The Harley Davidson Stage 2 upgrade can increase both torque and horsepower on the Milwaukee 8 107, 114 or 117. In my case I had all Harley Davidson Screamin Eagle components installed on my 2021 Road Glide Special. The Harley Stage 2 Upgrade involves moving from a
    Stage 1 upgrade which is upgraded slip ons, a high flow breather, and changing the tune on the engine via a Screamin Eagle Pro Street
    tuner. The Harley Davidson Stage 2 is the next step to get more performance out of the Milwaukee 8 motors by changing out the stock .335 cam to a higher lift camshaft such as the Screamin Eagle SE8-447 cam.
    Component Breakdown and Cost
    P/N Description Cost
    92500047 Screamin' Eagle Milwaukee-Eight Stage II - Torque Kit $509.95
    18572-13 Screamin' Eagle High-Capacity Tappets $274.95
    24004-03B Screamin' Eagle Lefty Bearing $52.95
    LABOR 6 hours $900.00
    Subtotal $1,737.85
    Optional on 2020 or Newer
    62400260 Screamin' Eagle Pro High Volume Oil Pump & Cam Support Plate Kit $774.95
    Total $2,512.80
    The components listed here and in the video are for video purposes only. The actual components may be different for your specific application and year of bike. Make sure to check with your parts and service professionals before ordering the parts for your Stage 2 upgrade.

    This is a must watch if you are considering a Stage 2 upgrade on your Harley. In the video, I cover what is a Stage 2, which components are needed and the associated cost, review the horsepower and torque numbers as compared to the stock 114 and ultimately share my conclusion to the question, Is the juice worth the squeeze?

      As for the tappets, just using new OEM ones is enough. On big builds,(stages 3 and 4) you would use the tappets you brought.

      Thanks Adam for watching and commenting. For the 117 motor you will have to go to the SE8 462 power cam for a Stage 2. The SE8 447 cam I used on the 114 is not recommended for the 117 as the 432 cam in the 117 is very close to the SE8 447 cam in terms of lift and torque. I recently did a Stage 1 upgrade on my 2023 Street Glide ST with the Screamin Eagle pro street tuner...I noted a nice improvement in throttle response. My advice is talk with the service advisor and or the master tech at your dealership. They can point you in the right direction. If you are already a subscriber thank you. I also did the 447 SE cam and love it. Ended up doing the Stage 2 for real cheap as I got Ebay new old stock parts that were dirt cheap. Went with factory pushrods as I'm not a fan of adjustables. Since I did all the work, it didn't affect the price other than gaskets besides it not being hard work at all. While I was in there also did the cam bearing, crank sprocket drom Feuling and S&S cuffs just for pleasing my OCD.

    Just had a couple of my bikes upgraded with the HD Stage 2 Kits. with the Screamin Eagle Torque CAM along with the KromeWerks header that uses the stock shields. So no CAT! That'll be paired with the TAB Performance pipes I already had installed on the bikes with the Zombie baffles. It sounds awesome! Using the Screamin Eagle tuner so I can keep my warranty. Very similar setup you have. I watched your videos and dedided to go a similar route. I know I could get more performance out of a 3rd Party CAM and Tuner, but this really does bump up performane and I get to maintain for HD warranty, especially since I hae an extended warranty. My local dealer also had me replace the stock HD Tappets and a few other odds and ends too. Again, pleased thus far. May use the new Bluetooth based Pro Tuner and let it help record and tune as you've mentioned in other videos. Keep up the good work with all of your videos. Learning alot. But it does get me spending more money LOL.

    For me it definitely was. I did the work myself, so saved quite a bit there. I went with a Wood 22xe cam on my 2018 107 Street Bob. Massive difference in stock HP vs after upgrade. I'm pulling 111/119 on the dyno with my 22xe, upgraded oil pump, Sawicki Mid Length 2-1, FuelMoto AC/DC with +1 high flow filter and 64mm TB and injectors. I have a 124 on another 2018 Street Bob with a very similar setup running 135/145.
    My biggest issue is the 6 hours of labor they are charging. It's a 3 hour job, especially since they aren't really tuning the bike, but just throwing a canned tune from the SE tuner on it.

    I have the stage two in my 2018 FLTRXS and I think it’s the best money I spent on upgrades to my bike. It is fully awake and ready to go and aggression ready if I need it at all times and in all 6 gears. I also like not having to drop a gear if I need to give life a spanking. It increased the exhilaration factor enough to make me know I can step out from the congestion whenever I need to whereas before the stage 2 upgrade I might hesitate to pound it and try to shoot out from the traffic pinches. No single thing woke up the beast in this Mil 8 more than that stage two upgrade.

    That’s well worth the price of admission to me! That torque cam is hitting 110 by 25-2600 rpm, and maxing out at 118 at 3500 and staying busy way past the rev range I ride my 114 in. I typically stay between 2500-3500 rpm while cruising and that’s a great increase in torque in that range! My Low Rider S would love that cam! I can’t imagine what a difference that would make on my 680lb motorcycle! I gotta get this done within the not too distant future.

    It was about 1800 for me to do a stage 2 to my 2011 Street Glide. Woods 222 cam for the long torque curve, S&S cam plate and oil pump, Timken cam bearings while I was there. S&S lifters, pushrods and gasket kit. Also, since I was doing it myself I had to buy about $150 worth of specialty tools (included in that $1800). Got the bike dyno tuned without needing to buy a tuner, so that was another $950 bucks. $250 of that was getting my ECM licensed to be reprogrammed.

    Really good video. I've had my '22 RGS for about 10 months and 25K miles. I just did a Stage 1 and am planning a Stage 2, but wasn't quite sure what to expect, as far as horsepower and torque increase and how it mapped relative to RPM. Your video gave me all of the info that I was looking for. I doubt that I'll go farther than Stage 2, but I definitely plan to do a Stage 2.

    Had stage 2 done to 2022 RKS, using the Harley screaming eagle parts (torque cam). Very satisfied with the performance of the engine. In addition to pro street tuner, also added a wide band (auto) component which supposedly auto adjusts fuel/O2 mix. Overall, think the HD stage 2 upgrade is cost efficient, keeps the bike conformed to emission standards (and maintains factory warranty), while producing sufficient hp/torque demands for my style of riding.

    I have a stock bike at the moment. Just purchased this bike a month ago. I’m looking at Stage 2 with full KW exhaust and louvered baffles. I don’t want super loud and I love that low rumble of the KW pipes. I started pricing it up with my local Harley shop today. I’ll stay with SE since I have the extended warranty on my 2021 117 motor CVO.
    My biggest gripe with Tab was that you have to take the muffler off to bang the baffles out. So I’ll go with KW and just remove screws on slip the baffles out if I change my mind on baffles.
    I’d plan on riding to Sturgis is next year. Would the torque cam cause any increase in gas consumption? So much of the. Riding will be open road and I’m sure 80mph plus.

    I'm getting ready for a Stage 2 on my 2017 FLTRU with 60k mi on it. The existing Stage 1 consists of a Fullsac Touring Head pipe and recore kit, S&S Air Cleaner (next time I'd go with Arlen Ness as I did with previous bikes), FP3 tuner. I'm doing the stage 2 because the stock lifters are failing (just like my 103TC did at 75k mi.). Fullsac recommends the SE447. I don't like adjustable push rods. Are the stock push rods the correct length, if not what solid push rod should I use or what length is needed? I know I'll need to R&R the rockers but not a big deal to me, yes I'm doing it myself.
    Warranty is not an issue so I'm open to other cams but I don't want to compromise mpg. Also I did subscribe.
    Thanks for anything you can offer.

    • @HDVIBE
      @HDVIBE  Před měsícem

      Thanks for watching, commenting, and subscribing. So the reason most use adjustable push rods when doing a Stage 2 is tp avoid taking off the top end. If you are already doing that, then putting in solid push rods is not an issue. The se8 447 is a good cam in my opinion. It brings on torque as you roll on the throttle. The other option is the SE8 462...or the S&S 465. Both have good low end torque and give you more power in the higher rpms. I'm personally not a fan of the S&S 475 cam. You loose low end torque and runs best at the 4000 and up rpm range. At take off, it almost stutters a bit. At least those that I know personally that have the 475 that's what they complain about it. Hope that helps. Thanks for your support and ride safe. 👊✌️👍

    Little bit of confusion…I’m at 15:40 of the video and you’re talking about cam lift and mention the “piston lift is higher for longer duration”….? I thought cams lift valves….and crankshafts lift pistons. Another question for me is (and I’ll hopefully find out after typing this and continuing with the video), is if the cam lobe goes higher, won’t the valve stems need to be shortened? And if so, do the valve springs need to change length? And do the materials used in said valve springs affect dyno numbers??? We’ll see. I got a (new to me) 2022 street glide special in apex black and I want a louder (black) exhaust and cam for lumpy idle. Being new I’d like to use Harley parts. Stage 2 or 3 etc etc without too much involved. (Not even considering some 131 motor overhaul here. Just some bolt on upgrades.

    The aftermarket tuners cause problems with the HD 2 year warranty... No doubt that an aftermarket tuner and a good dyno tune will make the engine run better with a better A/F ratio. @@HDVIBE the other issue that must be considered is crank pinion runout when installing the aftermarket oil pump and backing plate... the runout has to be somewhere between zero and 5 thousandths. if it is greater than that, your oil pump will most likely be damaged, which in turn has the potential for destroying your engine. and, if you are a rider relying on a HD warranty, you can most likely kiss that approved warranty goodbye. my friend had a stage 2 installed on his 2017 107 Road Glide. S&S backing plate and S&S oil pump. engine sumped and destroyed itself at 45,000 miles. he had a HD extended warranty. HD denied his claim because they blamed the oil pump. he took his bike to a buddy who used to work for HD as a well-qualified technician. he found the runout to be excessive. well above 5 thousands. regardless, HD would not approve his claim. something to consider.

    • @HDVIBE
      @HDVIBE  Před rokem

      I have thought about going to Stage 2 on the ST. Harley doesn't spec the SE8 447 torque cam for the 117 ST or CVO motor because as you mentioned the lift from the stock 432 cam is not much different than the 447 cam. If you go stage 2, and stay screamin eagle, you have to go to the power cam which is the SE8 462 cam. This cam likes to run in the higher RPMs to get max horse power. I've been personally contemplating the SE8 462 cam or going to stage 3 or 4. The Stage 3 kit uses the 447 cam but since you go to 122 cubic inch you get a very nice bump in torque and horse power. The numbers are off my brother and I both have same bike and same set up except I put a power cam in where his is torque cam. From 0-60ish his pulls strong and then you can feel it drop off. Where mine pulls from 45ish to top out speed and I can pull away from him very slowly at a faster speed. That being said from take off he has me and from a roll I got him. So the numbers are discouraging so don’t look at that ask friends and other riders. Each other rider has a different riding style so ask your self where do you like to ride and where do you want the power to come on strong at.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. You can do a Stage 2 on the 2003 heritage to increase power and torque. I would suggest talking with your local HD Dealership to get the specifics for your bike. However, first step is a Stage 1, which is a higher flowing breather, non stock slip ons and a tuner. If you don't have that done on the bike, give that a try. You will have to do that anyway before moving to a Stage 2 cam uograde. If you are already a subscriber to the channel...thank you. • @HDVIBE
      @HDVIBE  Před 7 měsíci

      Hey Bruce...so Harley doesn't not support the SE8 447 CAon the 117...primarily because the stock 432 can will run very close to the 447. So if you stick with screamin eagle, your option is the SE8 462 cam. The other option is go to Stage 3 122 kit then you get the SE8 447 Torque cam. At the end of the day, it depends on how you ride. I'm contemplating both options but haven't yet decided which way I may go. If you look at the Torque curve on the 117 with the SE8 462 cam it's a jump over stock under 3,000 rpms but it is a little flat between 2,500 and 3,000 rpms. However it is still better than the stock 432 cam. You will get good lope sound with the 462 cam...probably even better than the 447 cam on my RGS 114 since it is a higher lift cam. 👊✌️👍

I think you can do the upgrade at any mileage as long as the bike has been properly maintained. While I can not give real world riding experience as a comparison between the torque and power cam I can pass along what a Harley Master Technician told me on Friday. He would not recommend the power cam unless you are constantly running in the 3500 to 5000 rpm range. He also told me that often when people do get it installed they come back and want it taken out and have the torque cam put in. I was considering putting the power cam in my Street Glide ST and he talked me out of it as he said I would feel a torque loss on the Low end of the rpm range.
