  • Saucony and Hoka both released new carbon shoes early in 2023, with the Endorphin Elite and Rocket X2 sitting at the top of each brands’ racing shoe range. Both have all the usual ingredients of super-shoes, but feel very different on the run. In this video Run Testers Tom, Kieran and Nick deliver their verdict on which they’d pick from the Hoka Rocket X2 and Saucony Endorphin Elite.

I don't know what to make of this review/comparison. Nick says that the Saucony is springier, firmer and more propulsive and the Hoka is more squishy, softer and more likely to bottom out. Kieran on the other hand says it is the Hoka that's firmer and more propulsive and the Saucony is softer and sinkier. I know some things are purely subjective, but which is actually firmer?

When it comes to race fit on certain shoes...it just comes down to what suits your feet. The shape of the hokas is perfect for mine...just enough wiggle room and snug race fit on midfoot...I went half size up as I have a longer second toe (Mortens toe) and had some heel lockdown issues on right foot and as nick said sorted with lock lacing...I have PB'd a 10K knocking 4 mins off and done a training run 30K with 5 Km marathon pace repeats...effortless...was going far faster than expected and the HR was lower for the effort than expected. No bottoming out experienced but the stability is not super when tired and riding back to heels more and got a bit of ankle stabilizer muscles getting achy but expected in last 2 k of my first +30k training run. The foam in forefoot under the pads is A1...just great...forefoot strikers will feel great in these. My description of these is if Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 and Adidas Adios Pro 3 got frisky, this would be the offspring. Soft landing like EP3 and that energy return of the AP3 Love the reviews gents...keep it up. RX2 for the win for me. Have belfast marathon coming up to test mine out in.

I think I'll stay away from both for now. The narrow toe box of the Rocket X not allowing for the splaying of your toes and the heel issues is enough for me to hold off. The Endorphin Elite is just too expensive and the sore forefoot issues from multiple reviewers has scared me off. Thank you for your honest reviews.

These reviews are false. I bought rocket x2 because I have wide feet. The shoes are the most comfortable super shoe I have ever used and I’ve tried them all!

@@gbilya2 Thanks but I'll wait till next year. By then all the hype will have died down and we will have plenty of long term user reviews from a lot of different people. I've always found the Run Testers reviews especially Nick's to be very similar to my own experience. The price will make me wait for significant discounts regardless of whether it was a great shoe or not. $380 in Australia is absurd. I'm glad you are enjoying them and they work for you.

This is a very varied multi tester review!
Nick thinks the Saucony is firmer, Kieron sees it as the Hoka. Tom seems to fall down on Hoka more versatile whereas the Saucony more aggressive.
In summary, sounds like your saying if your life depended on it, then for a 5Km PB you pay the £270 grab the Endorphin Elites and worry about foot pains after.. or wait for the future price drop 😉 The Hoka is more forgiving but the softness/versatility is also undermined by the shoes tightness/fit is not enough to dislodge other shoes Alpha fly or Saucony Pro 3 or Adios Pro 3 from being an A race Marathon pick... is that about it?
    Cheers guys.

@The Road Runner You must know something I don't ie the Endorphin Elite & possible injury trends?
Pretty sure Saucony will point to the "Elite" being an aggressive no compromising offer primarily for the pros/lightweight faster runners. Would you classify the Endorphin Pro 3 the same?
As for this video, it shows testers will.own their own individual views even if there is variance which actually im ok with. Did leave me wandering if because of the type of running done, its Kieron as an outlier here. However, he's absolutely entitled to his opinion on the Saucony being firmer... it just seemed contradictory. Happy for anyone (run testers) to come back /correct my interpretation of what I'm watching!...

Yeah pretty interesting to see such different opinions of the same shoes. It probably comes down to running style, and just personal preference. I have the elites myself, and they definitely feel like a firm shoe. Comparing against NB elite v2 and vaporfly 2. But they are also insanely springy, and I don't feel like they are necessarily punishing my feet. A lot of foam to land on still! Haven't taken it for longer than 12km workouts so far though.

I like the way you all had completely different opinions about most aspects of the shoes
It reminded me of only fools and horses when del Rodney and grandad give there descriptions to the police about a man who stole a microwave 😂
Think it’s a case you have to test theses for yourself
Although I wouldn’t consider buying the the saucony because of the price not unless it’s the best shoe by far but people who have it are not saying that

Any recommendations for other shoes (both race and non race) that have a similar fully collapsible heel upper to the Hoka Rockect X2 . I need that non-interference / non padded heel. Even the bump inside the heel of the Endorphine Elite will interfere too much with my heel / achilles. Unfortunately I can't find the Rocket x2 in my size UK4.5 but it looks like it would suit me well. I have a pair of Hoka Carbon X Originals that suit me well but I'm now looking for a shoe that has less of a extended sole at the rear. Thanks

For me the Rocket X 2 is absoletly good for max HM but but not for full Marathon. bute the update to the rocket is between to worlds i like it so much more. i dont have the elite because i saw a lat of reviews that this is a bit fimer shoe and this i dont like but i like that bouncy feegling on the rocket x 2 . it reminds me a bit to the endorphin pro 3. i have some of the hoka carbon shoes and absolotly agree that the rocket x 2 is the best of all the hoka carbons.

The geometry of that Elite is so exaggerated. Not hard to see why you’d experience forefoot pain.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU ALL? Hoka is not a tight fitting shoe! Rocket x2 has no heel rub and comes wide!
