Her experience starting out in the male-dominated industry hasn't been an easy ride, but she found a way to stand out by offering extra services to her clients.

In Chile I have never seen a woman being a barber. sometimes a lady would trim my boyfriend's beard (as a hairstylist), but he tells me that going to the barber shop is an "experience" (keep in mind that in Chile we copy everything from the US xd). I have seen it and they usually have different kind of seats than the hairstylists, also it's much more expensive :o (typing this so maybe you see these are different things, kinda like being a tennis player vs being a table tennis player)

Up here in Canada, in the 20 years of my life, I think a dude has only cut my hair maybe twice. The countless other times, it's always been women. In fact, when I was a kid, I thought there was more of a prejudice towards male barbers.
You're confusing general hair stylist (ie: people who cut hair, usually women) with actual barbers... who only cut men's hair and work in barber shops usually catering to men only an providing other services like shaves and massages. Actual barbers are USUALLY men.
@@Nebx1989 All the barber shops I've ever been to were majority women, if not entirely women. I think it really comes down to the location, on top of most people usually sticking to one place, that makes it seem extremely one sided for people whether it's majority men or women.
@@Nebx1989 I know five licensed barbers. Two of them are men, and three of them are women. I think it's very culturally dependent. Barbershops had mostly disappeared in the Netherlands and now that they are coming back, many stylists (both male and female) who predominantly cut men's hair are becoming barbers.

We have women barbers and have had for as long as i can remember and im 65. Maybe America is different from England on that score

In Ireland it’s about 30-40% women, from what I’ve seen. (As a girl myself I don’t visit barber’s often, except with relatives or what not) but it’s never been something I really thought about. And I mean that’s a fairly reasonable percentage considering barbers are more associated with men’s hair and hairdresser’s likewise associated with women. I think this was just trying to be ‘empowering’ (that’s what they call it, right?) and controversial, but they ran out of ideas.

At the end of the day, it comes down to the quality of work. Maybe women just don't want to get their hand dirty and rightfully so. There isn't some convuluted boundary preventing women from being barbers. My own barber is a woman and she does the best job ever. You either have the merit or you're not working hard enough. I wouldn't be surprised that women just prefer attending to womens cosmetological needs more than men do in the barber/hairdressing world. She is successful. Great. End of story. I'm a female barber. I have won first in the state on va and 2 nd last year. I'm going to national here soon and would love to find out some of the produces you use. I specialize in fantasy beard design and fades. I find fadeing to be not only relaxing but so involved and some of my proudest works.
