    OMG! This video has helped me understand a bit more about what I am doing with stretching. It would be wonderful if you could make more videos like this to help newbies like myself understand what they are doing in Affinity Photo. You could even tailor the image to be something a beginner might try. Heck I am trying to process an image I took with my Galaxy Z Flip 3 and this video has helped me bring out detail I didn't know was there. No nebula or galaxies unfortunately but the stars are there. Anyway, keep up the amazing work and I hope to see more.

    Trying to use this video to learn Affinity Phots 2.5.2. I'm trying to edit a galaxy and when I get to the part to Select Sampled Color I'm not seeing marching ants anywhere around the galaxy, just a dotted line around the image not matter what I select in the image. Guess I'm going to have to use Starnet++. But I learned a lot about using Levels to adjust color and the Threshold tool. It's too bad this channel seems to be abandoned.

    • @AstroFarsography
      @AstroFarsography  Před 2 měsíci

      It will depend on the colour difference in the galaxy itself to the background tool. The select sampled colour will be dependant on that. If the whole image has an overall green or blue colour cast, these tools can struggle
      It's not abandoned, I won't abandon it. I just have had some issues in life that I've had to deal with. I hope to be back to creating regular content soon

    Hi AstroFarsography, in my image of the milky way taken on a 6 year old DSLR, one can already see the milky way, and some stars, but as we are told to shoot using 3200 ISO the image has that grey appearance. Which is not the same as your total black starting point. I know in your tutorial you say if you are using a DSLR start with the Threshold at a certain point, but my question is for my image is the process exactly the same as what you've done from 'start at the certain point'? Does that make sense? TIA if you are free to reply.

    • @AstroFarsography
      @AstroFarsography  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey there Nerrel.
      So yes, with a DSLR the camera does a small degree of processing inside of it already. That's why the black point is different.
      What you see out of stacking, or even in your single subs, should be similar or near to the 'start at that point' comment'. From there you can still use thresholds and curves etc, you just don't need to do initial curve stretches to make the data visible :)
      Hope that helps!

    • @nerrelloader4226
      @nerrelloader4226 Před 4 lety

      @@AstroFarsography Thanks so much. I actually didn't do any stacking. Just took one photo. Does that change my processing? Sorry, I am really new to this.

    • @fusion-music
      @fusion-music Před 2 měsíci

      It's quite okay to take a single shot of the Milky way and process it. But, it's s an advantage to take many shots and "Stack" them. The software to stack the images is free. You then take the stacked image into a photo editor like Affinity Photo and follow the processing as outlined. "Stacking" helps get more data and also helps get rid of noise.
      Take the whole process of learning slow.
      So whether or not you stack, it doesn't change the process. You can stack in Affinity, but I didn't get as good results and I haven't tried it with V2 Affinity Photo. So, I think I'm at the stage of trying to work it out again.
      Best comment I ever heard is that "astronomy is a slow process." Don't be in a rush to get results. Keep reading.

    Very good tutorial! Love this software, inexpensive and very capable, especially when using it with plugins like Topaz DeNoise. Question. Did you have to convert your Tiff to a 16bit black scaled tif? Astrostace did this in her video and I can do the same when using APP as my stacking software, but when using DSS for stacking, Affinity Photo does not give me the option to convert to a black scaled image, probably something to do with DSS and how it saves. Not sure if it matters but I did notice some stretching issues not in a black scaled mode. Curious to know your thoughts on this

    • @AstroFarsography
      @AstroFarsography  Před 4 lety

      Thanks Bill
      This image didn't need converting as it was saved through APP as a 16/bit TIFF. Even my DSS files are saved automatically as 16/Tiff
      In DSS when you press save to file, you want to click the drop down box below file name and select 16/bit TIFF Integer and save it like that. And it should be fine from there :)

    • @AstroFarsography
      @AstroFarsography  Před 4 lety +1

    • @pilsyppah
      @pilsyppah Před 4 lety

      @@AstroFarsography When you decrease pixel dimensions, you lose image data. Resolution is a term that can only be used in connection with physical dimensions, hence the unit dpi (or ppi) dots (or pixels) per inch. The resolution field in any image editing program sets the phisical size of the image. ie.: your roughly 7600px x 5100px image would be 76"x51" at 100 dpi, your 2500px x 1600px image will only be 25"x16". If you drop the resolution of this 2500x1600 image to 50dpi, your physical dimensions will be 50"x32" or if you increase the resolution to 200dpi, then the dimensions will drop to 12.5" x 8", but your image data remains exactly the same.

So really for resizing the image for performance purposes going from 72 to 100dpi really didn't do much as I just ended up making the image bigger again and what not. Tried to follow every step (Nikon DSLR used) and, while it is English to you, it's Chinese to me and my levels adjustments for the colours simply on't even move the numbers on the info section. I was even in trouble before that point with trying to figure out why you do threshold and then just trash them plus when I sample the white portion of the stars, the figure is 255 and I don't know how to reduce. Again, you know what you're doing and why, but, my trying to emulate - not understanding very subtle points it seems - just doesn't work.

    • @fusion-music
      @fusion-music Před 2 měsíci

      This is a marvelous tutorial, but also very complex for beginners. Numbers '0' & '255' have lost all detail. You cannot recover from there. Well, that's the theory. Your. Numbers ideally are between 1 - 254.
      Just try to learn some of the techniques and adjustments. Then build on your knowledge. I would say it's impossible to replicate this image trying to copy the method. But you can learn a lot.
      If we are tired when we edit asto photos, we likely will do things a lot differently - & possibly not like the results.
      For myself, I want to go back to old data images of mine and try to apply this method, because I know my method was not like this.
      Be patient- enjoy learning, because you will never stop.
