- Welcome back to Alpha Hotel Flight Simulator Training!
In this video, we’ll look at how to use the OBS mode on the G1000. OBS mode allows you to utilize any point you can navigate to on the GPS like a VOR. You can use the course selector to dial in a “radial” to that point, and track inbound or outbound on the selected radial. You can also use it to get navigational guidance to line up with a runway at any airport.

Hi. I'm French and i learn IFR and G1000 for MSFS. I discovered recently your CZcams Channel. The best one on CZcams. A big Thanks for all your very precise explainations.
@AlDo-jc6vk, thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you're enjoying the content & finding it helpful. Welcome to the channel, and thanks for watching!
That was super fantastic! I had an instrument lesson the other day and was introduced to the OBS function on my GPS and was like "Huh?" I basically understood the concept that it worked like VOR radials, but I was still unsure of how it all fit together in the bigger picture. Your video made this function crystal clear. Much thanks!!
@gregagee4328, glad you found the content helpful, and that it was able to clear up that topic for you. Thanks for watching!
Great explanation. Thank you. Using approach button can make things more complicated in some cases. Hence , obs approach is a simple alternative
@apivovarov2, glad you enjoyed the content.
I wouldn't reccomend using OBS mode on an approach, though, as you can accidentally change the course. OBS mode is more for navigational flexibility enroute than for use on approaches (except when you go missed approach - you then need to use the OBS button to manually sequence to the missed approach point.)
Approach mode should be used any time you want to track both lateral and vertical course guidance - such as on an ILS or LPV RNAV (GPS) approach. If you want to just track lateral course guidance, you want to use the NAV mode.
Thank you. The best tutorial yet I’ve seen on this topic.
Thanks for the kind words, Brian. Glad you're enjoying the content, and thanks for watching!

Glad you enjoyed it Kevin. Thanks for the subscription, and thanks for watching!
First off, thank you so much for your truly excellent series on the G1000. I'm a retired pilot. I wondered why you couldn't disengage OBS mode just prior to crossing the OBS fix and let the AP turn your onto the original flight plan heading. It may or may not (I don't have my flight sim yet) require a couple more button presses, but would make a much smoother transition.
I haven't tried it that way, but I don't know of any reason it wouldn't work. It might cause the autopilot to knock you out of nav mode into roll hold mode, but you can fix that easy enough by pressing nav again.
Give it try, and let me know if it works!
Thanks for watching!
