People who doubt Steve have literally zero context for what this franchise has endured. They have no idea Ken Holland left this team in utter shambles, with a ton of bad contracts and no one in the farm system. They dont realize Detroit hasnt had a lottery pick this entire duration of the rebuild. How does San Jose's rebuild look without Macklin Celebrini? How does Chicago's without Bedard? How does Anaheim without Leo Carlson, Becket Sennecke and Mason Mctavish? It would be rought, and instead of tanking ad nauseum and never getting rewarded for it he pulled the trigger to try and make this team more of a stable force for when the kids he did draft get there, that they wouldnt be budrdened with single-handidly carrying them. This is a borderling playoff team and the play of the kids will determine if they make the cup playoffs. Given what we saw in GR last year I have high hopes.

Detroit has increased their season standings points every year for the last several under Yzermam. This year I expect that to continue. I am expecting at least 1 more add via trade or free agent signing for a defenseman. Then leave room for the youth to move up from Grand Rapids. This youth movement is such an unknown factor in predicting the upcoming season. However the Red Wings were recently rated as having the #1 prospect pool in the NHL. If there's a team that one can expect positive outcomes from its youth it would be the Red Wings.

Having been a Wings fan my entire life and remembering all the Stanley Cups we won when Yzerman was still playing for us I must say that he has made great progress since he took over as GM. When he first got here this team was in shambles due to the bad contracts and a depleted farm system. He has done wonders to straighten that out and has put us in a position where we could again be considered as contenders for the Cup. When you are rebuilding a team from scratch you will always have your doubters on how it is going because it takes time to do it but fans are generally impatient and tend to want results immediately. It doesn't work that way. I look back to the time the Wings hired Scotty Bowman to be their coach and eventually their GM and coach. The team was close but not quite there yet but he made the moves that had to be made in order to take that next step towards the ultimate goal. I think it is safe to say that Yzerman is taking that same approach now. I still trust the Yzerplan because it appears to be working. We have improved every year since he took over and now I think we are headed in the right direction towards winning a Stanley Cup again. The fans just have to have faith in his decisions about how this should go and not doubt him. He learned how to be a GM from one of the best.

More pressure will be on the coach than anyone else this season. Yzerman has added and subtracted NHL players quite aggressively each year. Obviously Debrincat and Kane have been the only really elite players he has brought in from elsewhere. But the majoriy of players brought in have been capable 2nd tier type players. Now that the goaltending has been made stronger (on paper at least), the pressure is on the coach to teach a defensive hockey system. Yzerman stated that at the end of the year about wanting to see defensive hockey team-wide. It's frustrating watching Larkin age and try his hardest year after year and not get much support. I'm sure Yzerman feels the same. I like to think that if this team plays run and gun non-defensive hockey Lalonde will not be extended. I don't think Yzerman will be lenient anymore. This is indeed a business and Yzerman does treat the players like disposable employees. He is definitely not as soft as Holland. When he took over the team I was expecting 5 years to significantly improve the team. Now I'm thinking 7 or 8 years. If it goes beyond that then there's a problem.

Looong time Wings fan here. I like a lot of his moves, and I've been questionable on others. But Yzerman will know these guys far better than I, along with all the financials. Also, this team had absolutely nothing going for it when Yzerman arrived. We had like no draft picks at all and next to no NHL caliber prospects. Then we got screwed in the NHL draft lottery and fell places every year for like 4 years straight. Plus we had a couple that like everyone thought was gonna be great just fall apart, like Zadina. But the culture of Detroit has started to shift back to a winning one. For the first several years no one wanted to come to Detroit, now we are starting to see stars pick Detroit over everyone else. These guys recognize that the team and culture is shifting to a winning one and lets face it, they all want to be on a winning team. Debrincat wanted to be here and saw a team on the upswing. Kane was looking mostly to proving he can still play and once he did, he chose to stay here as he wants to win and he sees something with us. Now we just got Tarasenko and while I don't know his story yet, it's probably not far off from the others. It may not be going as fast as many would like, but it's moving along.

I have followed this team closely for years, and I don't think this roster is any better than last year's and I expect their record to be worse. Having said that, I think Yzerman is a good gm. Although he has signed some boneheaded contracts, for the most part, he has a knack for finding good value in trades and free agency. This free agency was a seller's market, teams were overpaying in term and salary like crazy, which helped inflate the cost of the mid-tier FAs as well. I thought Yzerman made two great signings with Kane/Tarasenko, which would like bring a nice return at the trade deadline. All in all, likely a regression year as far as team record goes, but sometimes you have to take a step back to take two steps forward. The cap situation is much improved and we have some good trade equity when the deadline comes. No playoffs this year, probably.

Prepare yourselves folks, it's coming whether you want it to or not.

Just believe in the plan this man won't disappoint us. Look if you don't believe in it just wait to see if the disbelievers were wrong or the believers were let's see whose right in the up incoming years. Detroit "fans" are used to calling for someone's head after 2 or 3 years and wondering why there's never a new result (see Detroit Lions before MCDC).
It took 10 years for TB to win a cup from the time Steve Yzerman took over. Steve took over TB when they were already a bottom feeder team. Detroit was in a hole when Steve took over, thanks to Ken Holland. Hell, we're still playing for Abdelkader who hasn't played in years.

Not everything Stevie Y has done has been gold. Been a couple of bad contracts. All that to say he’s done a lot more good than bad. This franchise was literally at the bottom of a bottomless pit as far as contracts, lack of cap space, and next to zero talent in our prospect pool when he took over. People outside the fan base don’t have the context and even some Red Wings fans forget how bad this was when he took over.

Every player he’s Drafted minus Kasper has exceeded expectations, and continuously gets better every year. I don’t care what ppl say about Yzerman, if ppl think the Yzerplan is failing solely Cause he didn’t bite the bullet and sign expensive UFAs this offseason, then you know nothing about hockey. Our main goal this offseason is first and foremost sign Seider and Raymond. The fact he was able to keep Kane on the team and then add Tarensenko, I don’t think our roster skill wise changed that much, yeah we lost gostisbere, but Yzerman replaced him with honestly one of the best players available for that role and for a good price. He is trying to build this team from tbe ground up, and as the vets on contracts expire and go to the market he’s going to keep adding our young prospects, and that’s essentially how you properly run a franchise.

  • @richierich398

I still trust the Yzerplan. However, I do think it’s fair to criticize some of the bad moves he has made. I would also add that every fan base probably isn’t happy with every move their GM’s have made as well.

    • @icedo1013
      @icedo1013 Před 3 dny

What is the end goal with the criticism though? Sure, we can talk about the Holl contract or the output of guys like Chiarot or Copp, but at the end of the day none of these guys are part of the real future core Yzerman has been building for this team. I can understand deriding him if Kasper or Wallinder or Danielsson or ASP or Cossa or Johansson or any combination thereof fall completely flat, but everything we have points toward truth in the antithesis. All of those guys will be regular NHL players, and some to a very high caliber. These 1/2/3 year contract guys are little more than mentors/consultants for the real meat and potatoes of the team while still being serviceable enough to make legitimate bids to earn some playoff experience.

What??! Where did you get this from?? That's not what Steve Yzerman said.. is actually the opposite.. you guys need to pay more attention, he said that he DOESN'T feel the pressure from the media or other people to move quicker or make BIG splash or anything like that..🙄.. he basically said that he goes by the beat of his own drum, and going to continue to do things his way.. I actually had their correct someone earlier today on the local station who is the host of this show on Woodward Sports.. they have a live chat.. but that guy is always getting things wrong when it comes to hockey.. he actually gave me a shout out back.. shockingly lol
And so far as for those other people who're making fun of the Yzerplan.. they're as relevant to a penny found on the ground.. anybody that knows their stuff and has been playing the game and studies the game can easily see what Yzerman is doing and the those other people are ignorant and they're envious.. the Detroit Lions are going through the same thing with Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell.. opposing fans try to rag on them but in reality they're really envious of what's going on and that they see Detroit is about to be a powerhouse.. PERRIODTT..
YOU DON'T NEED TO EXPLAIN ANYTHING TO MORONS..

It has been a little frustrating. But we’re not in his position. But you have to realize that Detroit has had a lot of crappy sports teams for a long time. The one consistently great team we had was the Red Wings through the 90s and into the 2000s. And now it’s been 8 years since we’ve seen our team in playoff hockey which we use to live for. This is completely irrelevant, playoff experience is invaluable for all players, and young players especially. Nobody expected them to go deep in the playoffs at the beginning of the season, the expectation was to be playing meaningful games in April, which they absolutely did. You shifting the goalposts to "Well, even if they squeaked in they wouldn't have done anything l0l cope" does nothing but show your unmitigable bias, how little your opinion actually means and how it should be summarily discarded with extreme prejudice.

How many top 5 overall picks has Montreal had? Now how many has Detroit had? How many times did Montreal move down in the draft? Now do Detroit. Hint, Detroit has 1 (4th overall) since 2018, while Montreal has 4 (3rd, 1st, 5th, 5th). Don't get me started on Buffalo. I think Detroit has moved down in draft more than any other team in the league.

The Yzerplan is fine. Do I think SY has made mistakes - MANY! The prospects coming up are skilled - but I don’t see any big scorers or big checkers coming up. I think Stevie should have been targeting HUGE scorers in the last two drafts. I think he is giving away to much to get cap space without shopping the players around more. I truly believe he has to trade for a big forward who can score. They need to get progress of ALL of the goalies they have drafted and traded for. Then DRW must get the kids into NHL action. Only then will I say the Yzerplan has worked!

Nobody expected him to dump $4m out of nowhere to find room for Tarasenko. What makes you think *now* you've seen it all and can expect/predict every move even in the rest of the offseason, let alone years into the future? Holland didn't have a nearly ubiquitously ranked #1 prospect pool in the league while flirting with the playoffs, he was selling the entire farm for another magic bean or two in Stephen Weiss or David Legwand types with not even an iota of a plan for when they were done. This is an apples to seahorses comparison and it's no small miracle that nobodies like you will never sniff NHL management.
