This is perhaps his most famous portrait. Frans Hals painted it in 1624. It was given its current title some two and a half century later. The strange thing is that it is neither a cavalier, nor is he laughing. However, it is, without a doubt, a masterpiece, and it is so much fun to view it up close.
In this video I zoom in on all the wonderful details of the painting, but after you watch it, you should really go and have a look at the real thing.

Yes a truly very great painting. I was with the Laughing Cavalier on Sunday at the National Gallery London before he was returned to the Wallace Collection.
It has all of the hallmarks of a masterpiece.

Great video...yes, the Wallace Collection is free to enter. I love Frans Hals...I saw his giant guild paintings in Haarlem - the way he draws hands is so clever that I couldn't stop staring at very them!

Love this guy, 😁🥰 he's so handsome!!!! I can hear him laughing while posing for the artist. Love the detail in the clothing. And... ☝️ Love how you explain art. Thank you so much.

I have just started my day (is 7.00 AM here in Buenos Aires) in a most wonderful fashion thanks to you. Frans Hals is one of my favourite artists and "The Merry Cavalier" (which I think is a nice optional title) is, in my opinion, his finest work. Your analysis is excellent and to the point without the irritating, irrelevant and stupid observations usually made by some "experts" who try to show off their "deep knowledge" of the subject.
For all Frans Hals admirers I recommend the magnificent catalogue of the great 1989 exhibition held by the Royal Academy of Arts and the National Gallery of Art of the USA. It was written by Seymour Slive, the foremost authority on the subject, with the assistance of a group of Dutch experts. It is, by far, the best book on Frans Hals.
Thank you for this beautiful and very interesting video. I have just subscribed to your channel. Regards

Astounding portrait artist who makes me scratch my head. I was looking at one in San Francisco a month ago. I like the video essay format on CZcams. You should just ask for feedback at the start. I think it's a good way to begin a video essay.

Thank you so much for this explanation! It's a really beautiful painting. I cannot believe the great detail of the man's clothes.. awesome! And what a huge difference the upwards moustache causes in the face!! I could have sworn the man was really smiling 😮 Merry Christmas! 🎄❤

A cavalier can also be a "gallant" or a "ladies' man" -- which is suitable enough.

Laughing cavalier has blue eyes, and the other guy has brown eyes so i dont think it is the same man.
