This wonderful painting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art shows Jeanne d'Arc or Joan of Arc in the midst of her spiritual awakening.
She was a peasant girl who, in 1425, started having visions of the Archangel Michael, Saint Margaret and Saint Catherine. They told her she had to liberate France from the English.
Of course her story did not end well, but over time she became a heroine of France and would be depicted countless times. My favourite of those is this one by Jules Bastien-Lepage. So in this video, we take a close look at all the details in the painting while I tell you its story.

I have been fortunate to see the Joan of Arc painting in the MetMuseum in NYC. It is breathtaking. It's a very large painting, hung low near the floor so you feel like you are standing in the garden with her and could step into the picture and walk around. I lived in NYC for several years and I loved that painting the best of all the masterpieces I saw there. It was unforgetable.

I was 12 when I first saw it, tbh I was bored at the museum because I wasn’t really interested in art at the time, but when I saw that painting… I stood there for like 20 minutes completely mesmerized. I don’t know how to describe the feeling, but I felt so connected. What a wonderful story!! (And wonderfully taught)

Uniquely spooky and brilliant. It's original compared to many others.

WOW WOW WOW WOW!!! A totally new discovery for me, thank you so much Carel... one I sincerely hope to see one day!! I've been to the Met but such a looooong time ago and I knew almost absolutely nothing at that time. I've loved visiting all the famous Joan of Arc sites around France, of course Rouen being my favourite, where there is an absolutely LOVELY Musée des beaux arts I've visited many times... you probably know it!

*WOW!* Such a great channel regarding the world of art and opening the viewer up to discover hidden gems around us! 🙂❤ This is my favorite painting of Joan. Along with her inward gaze, I think when some viewers don't notice the three saints in the background at first it just makes it even more mysterious and slightly unearthly with that gap between the two. For the most part Lepage's 'fumbling for effect' regarding how to depict something spectral alongside naturalism works to it's advantage now in creating that sense of unease. It's also cool when artists 'get it right' regarding Joan hearing her voices on her right side, as she herself stated.

Stunning picture, Carel!! Joan seems to be out of the painting. She is so alive.

This painting is one of a few paintings in the Met I have come consider my friend. She is always my very first visit. When friends visit I always ask them to say hello to Joan for me. As an artist I can’t help but notice the tree that appears to be growing from the top of her. Knowing these things are never a mistake especially from a realist, I have my thoughts.
However I’d love to know your thoughts???

Yes, I also noticed that 'problem' with the tree beside her. I didn't realize her left hand is resting on one of the branches of the tree, especially until after I saw a couple of the sketches Lepage made of the model with various positions of her outstretched hand .

@@storiesofart I’m not sure but can’t help but feel the dissonance in the trees placement. As an artist I know I would toil as to if I should use this placement even when telling a story.
People love to comment and contemplate on Joan”s mental stability and I can’t help but notice the wild almost evil feeling the tree gives. Trees are usually a symbol of life. This tree with it’s disturbing placement gives the appearance of growing out of her head. With its this horned shapes and placement it delivers me more to schizophrenia than heaven. In combination with the amazing eyes it’s haunting at the very least. A beautiful haunting painting by a magnificent artist. He’s one of my favorites.

Great video! I love your channel! May I recommend that you analyze a work by Millais? It's called the order release and it's one of my favorites from his pre-raphaelite phase. Keep up the good work! Cheers!

IMO, the naturalistic style dropped out of fashion due to the advent and general concept of ‘modern art’ (pleasant, but child-like painting).
