This is Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao's story, from the beginning to the end. [STORY BELOW]

This song is about accepting that everyone has a dark side. An important lesson from MDZS, "no one is perfectly good, and no one is perfectly evil." [story]
“When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see

[Jin GuangYao only ever dreamed of being recognized by his father. He placed all of his faith in Jin GuangShan, saw him as a "saint" that only to realize in the end JGS never genuinely cared for his son and merely used his abilities to increase their clan's power.]
"When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood’s run stale”
[This is how Lan Xichen wanted to see beauty and the good in the world, to believe in peace, only for reality to fail his 'dreams' when the war ensues.]
"I wanna hide the truth
I wanna shelter you
But with the beast inside
There’s nowhere we can hide”
[Meng Yao even from the beginning sincerely cared for Lan Xichen. At the course of the war he has to choose between serving the Jin Sect and its selfish interests for control and power vs. choosing the "white"/good side and being truthful to about his deeds to Lan Xichen.
JGY wants to suppress the truth about his dark side by rejecting it and hiding it from LXC, but at the same time he fears that at some point of time this dark side of his will eventually surface irrespective of his efforts.]
"No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come"
[It doesn’t matter what birth a person is as everyone possesses a dark side and Lan Xichen acknowledges that no one can be called perfectly good or evil. He wants to embrace that truth about BOTH him and Meng Yao.]
"When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide”
"I may seem like a better person on the outside, but in reality I'm just as bad and capable of evil deeds as everyone else"
[This is the fact that Lan Xichen said himself he had been aware of Jin Guangyao's deeds, it's just that he believes he's got a justifiable reasons for everything. This shows that Lan Xichen believes in grey morality. He is willing to make excuses for Jin Guangyao because he trusts in his good intentions.]
"don't get too close, it's dark inside"
[Meng Yao tries to put a line separating his truth from Lan Xichen, and trying to cover everything he has been hiding from this world. He is scared if he loses LXC once LXC finds out the truth.]
"They say it's what you make
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
"
[Meng Yao's fate-- he was born less privileged, afraid of the fact that he might just suffer and remain like that for the rest of his life. Here he is acknowledging that in the end, no matter through all his efforts maybe
the world won't see him as anything more because of his birth circumstances.]
"I need to let you go"
[Meng Yao believes he will never deserve Lan Xichen because of how messed up his life has become searching for respect and recognition which he realizes he may never even be able to achieve in his lifetime. He would rather 'let go' of him before he ends up dragging down the only light in his life with him down to the pits as well.]
"Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how”
[Lan Xichen saw a bright, beautiful future in Meng Yao's eyes. Everything comes back to when they first met, wishing it remained like that forever. But they both cannot escape the misfortunes and tragedies fate assigned to them.]
