Great video. Two things, on the jig, tie a loop knot so that the jig sits correct in the water. On those sickle hook and others, bend them out slightly, more hookups.

I always used a 4’ to 5’ ultralight rod/spinning combo with jig and bobber set-up. Jigs were always either white, yellow or red/white combo. Where I fished here in California it always worked if there were crappie there. Like you figured out Kelly, a short rod let’s you fish in the brush where a long one won’t.
I love how the “service stations” in Florida and the keys are like full blown tackle shops!
I found for cleaning/filleting fish the best thing to use to lay your fish on is a rough cut 1X8 fence board. The fish won’t slip and you just hose it down when done.
Hi Kelly, not sure you will ever read this but those crappie / speck carcasses are amazing to make fish bone broth. The secret is to make them super clean (gills, guts etc) then never ever let it boil and never do longer than an hour. It goes super gelatinous. Try it, you welcome.

February-March is when the big 'uns bite! Was crappie fishing @West Point years ago and we wuz gettin' skunked. The three of us had barely caught anything all day while fishing in the treetops (like I said-years ago). We were all using floats and could not get a bite. I finally took off my float and it was like I had flipped a switch! Caught one with every cast-as long as it moved they bit it!

Wired2Fish did a video talking about how color doesn't matter as much as shape, size, and action for crappie. Better safe letting a keeper go than keeping a short fish when unsure. Also, in Gabe's stingray/sheepshead vid he said that gar bent his spear, but it was bent before going for that gar, as seen in the slowmo.

I do aquaponics. Way back in the day looking up fish and aquaponic videos is how i found the whole matrix of south Florida youtube fishing folks you guys know, and thus yall. Aquaponics is where you dont use the man-made chemicals used within Hydroponics and use instead the fish-waste to feed the plants in one closed system.

if you keep a little tag at the bottem you can flip the filet and skin it without cutting the skin off the fish makes it really easy to skin if you dont have a way of holding then skin.

Kelly, surprise Gabe with this Salsa recipe. I was eating at one of the best Mexican restaurants I’ve ever been to, and asked the owner how he made his Tomatillo Salsa, and he gave me the recipe.
8 large Tomatillos
1 Sweet Onion
Cilantro to your taste
1 Bell Pepper
3 Jalapeños
1 Avocado
1/3 cup Agave Nectar
Mix in food processor until puréed
I guarantee he will use it on everything, it’s always a big hit when I make it.
Crappie slabs for me are the best eatin fish. Filleted out my mouth is watering.

Those hook shanks are called sickle hook. Supposed to be stronger. We use them on lures called poisontails for flounder up on Long Island
