Axe benefits for rejecting job offers? Feat. Nicola Thorp & Albie Amankona | Jeremy Vine

  • In a bid to get people back into the workforce, Nigel Farage's party has said he'd axe benefits for those who have been unemployed for four months, or if they reject two offers of work.
    The party claims their plans will make work an attractive option - but critics are asking what jobseekers would survive on if their benefits are taken away.
    At the moment, if you're looking for work you're entitled to jobseeker's allowance.
    If you're up to the age of 24, you can get £71.70 a week.
    If you're over 25, you can get up to £90.50.

      They also make it sound like there is a job out there for everyone. That is not the case as the number of unemployed will always exceed the number of available jobs. That's how our economic system works.

    I hate the narrative that being on benefits is easy. I done it for 6 months and the jobs I was asked to take and the pay, it wasn’t worth it. And I can imagine that’s why a lot of single parent families or just families in general seek that support because it’s their only option. If you axe benefits, you better put affordable childcare in place, or we’ll have a lawless society.

      40 years ago it was no different. Nothing has changed even though multiple governments have come up with similar schemes to the Reform Party's scheme and none of it has worked. And I can guarantee that benefits will not be stopped when children are involved. Can you imagine the outcry in the government and society?

      People need to be prepared to do a job they don't like. The majority of us do it. Why should anyone be paid not to work. I do not include those who physically cannot work. And yes families should be supported and not force parents straight back to work but we shpuld create an environment where it is financially viable for either mum or dad to stay at home to raise the child should they choose to want to.

I have a full time job now. Before they start this ( I DO AGREE WITH THIS IF IMPLEMENTED) BUT IF ON 0 hours contracts or working for an agency (employers will use you for 3 months not employ you themselves because they have to pay the agency a fee for finding you) and let you go, you are then deemed to have made yourself unemployed and penalised for something that is beyond your control. I think these 3 things MUST be addressed before SANCTIONS are IMPLEMENTED.

    Funny how boomers/older people are completely unsympathetic to benefit claimants. The reason for this is that claiming and living off benefits in their day (my day too) was a walk in the park and plenty of people took advantage of it at the time - even just as a temporary stop gap. From working in a benefits related job, I can tell you that this is patently no longer the case! Whoever claims nowadays usually needs it and is living on a pittance and only the complete diehard "layabouts" would consider that as lifestyle choice. As usual, Farage is demonising those most in need with no voice in society to infuriate people and bribe them with what will be insignificant savings made in tax. There's no money to recoup off this group of people - he's conning you as ever

    • @mum2jka
      @mum2jka Před 10 dny

      did you also notice how Farage jumped from those who are off work on sick benefits to those who are 'choosing not to work'? this is classic Farage and he has some people agreeing with him and believing they're all in the same basket. It's ridiculous. And when he's questioned on it he blames everyone else for 'not listening' or 'deliberately twisting' what he's saying.

If we have a £20,000 tax threshold, there will be no money to rebuild and reinvest. The idea that cutting benefits will work is just more dog whistle crap from those who would divide us further and it will just cause more homelessness and social problems. Farage's policies are nothing more than fantasy - but they don't have to add up because he won't be forming a government. They're just there to whip up support from the self-righteous, recreationally outraged, and terminally selfish members of society
