  • Questions answered:
What does a Diplomatic Courier do? Note, i say “secure transport” in the video - a better description might be “secure escort”.
    What about the pay?
Will it be a foot in the door to become a DSS Special Agent?
What does it mean “permanent upon tenure?”

As a former Diplomatic Courier, I can tell you a person has to be very comfortable with working alone and eating alone a lot. This is not a job for people who need to be around people all the time. You are basically providing a Top Secret presence to make sure nobody messes with. the bags, since you cannot see your pouches all the time when flying. This job entails a lot of watching baggage people load and unload your diplomatic pouches from the belly of the aircraft, then following with your courier escort the pouches to their next destination. Courier pouch loads could be ten pounds and one bag you carry on the plane with you, or 2500 kilos of stuff you load in the belly of the plane. Your job is to guarantee the integrity of the pouches from the pouch room to the Embassy/location in the States. Courier Missions entail the use of military aircraft or possibly a privately chartered airframe for very large loads of stuff, say for a new Embassy under construction. I visited 65 countries in two years as a Courier and have transported dip pouches using military planes, contract jumbo jets, a semi trailer for a truck trip from DC to Canada, and driven in other types of vehicles to deliver pouches. The joke in the Courier world is all you need to be able to do to be a Courier is to be able to count to 100 and tell a flight attendant "chicken or fish" - we are also knows as "bag draggers", which tells you how exciting this job can be at times.

I worked as a Diplomatic Courier from 1961-1967. Flew 1St class all over the World. It was a job requiring long hours doing nothing apart from keeping an eye on the classified material being delivered. 98% of my travel was done before jet travel. It was a lonely job but one that allowed seeing quite a bit of the World. I flew out of Panama, Manila and Frankfurt. Would I do it again today? No.

Great info here. I wasn’t interested in this job at all before, but after hearing what you have to say it definitely sounds like a good opportunity.

Hey Paul, man I’m sorry for the delay. I must have missed this one! Hopefully we’ve chatted on another medium. I believe you can submit your wish list of the few locations options. Not completely sure though.

You can absolutely own a home. Rent it, live in it when you’re state side - your choice, but owning a home while in the State Dept is always an option bud.
