With the door open you get a better view while being able to remain in the seat with your feet able to control the pedals.

had something similar happen recently, my main daily driver puts itself in park when it switches off, I jumped in my old car and turned it off but left it in drive, went to go jump out and it starts rolling back down the driveway because it was still in drive but the engine was off

Yes!!! I just did a AC belt on my newer Camaro yesterday. They took the tensioner away, it's a stretch fit belt. Wtf was wrong with a tensioner?? They need to leave well enough alone.

My family farm had a great employee a while back that didn’t put a pickup back in park and it rolled down and hit something. When you work a lot sometimes you screw up. This seems like a great feature that can fix someone from screwing up. I will admit that a lot of the electronic junk on these new vehicles aren’t good. But this is one thing I like.
That was my thought. In our one garage, we have paint markings for the in ground lift. You have to open the door usually to check where you're at and creep into position.

as long as the seatbelt is plugged into the buckle it shouldn't go into park. I drive tow truck and these bullshit electronic shifters usually have "car wash mode" for leaving it in neutral and exiting the vehicle. usually has to be running to get it in Neutral from park. If the seat belt is buckled it should stay in neutral with the door open.

Already dealt with this system malfunctioning on a 2023 f150. It's even better because it automatically activates the parking brake at the same time. FPOS was repeated many times as the tow truck was loading it on to a flatbed. 90 days and 3 separate trips to the dealership later it's back in service.
Power seats, electric steering, digital displays, keypads, power mirrors, power windows, and a hundred sensors that control things you don't even know exist. I drive a 20 year old luxury suv, half of these things are broken on it, most are too expensive to fix.
I worked on Mercedes work van at work once that would slam in park if the door opened at low speeds. Real fun to mess with the guys pulling into the bays 😂
My ram a 2020 will do something similar to this. It'll put it back in park and put the e brake on... which is real fun when you are trying to back up a couple inches to hook a trailer up.

Yup sometimes when backing up my trailer I open the door and look out this would prevent me from doing it and I already hate it because my girls Honda Pilot does this shit if you open the door with it in reverse it will shift back into park automatically

Funny story with this, i work at a sewage plant and they give us all f150s, my foreman has a 2021 model. One day i was riding with him to pick up a pump from a repair shop, after leaving my boss stopped to double check the straps (keep in mind this man is 72) as he get out i realize he has the truck in drive still but didn't say anything because im stupid ig, anyway i watch the shifter do this and it blows my mind. Im of course thinking that this man already knew the the truck would do that, so when he gets back in i say "i dint know your truck can put its self in park, thats cool" this man turns to me with a straight face and says "no it cant" after trying to convince him he say "does it really, let me see" so he threw it in drive and opened the door and after he shifted over he just sat there as baffled as i was that the truck could do that. After the fact i realized that this man casually almost let his truck go into unintentional auto pilot with me and a 15k pump in it.

@@clickbaitgod6384 to do an alignment on most modern day alignment machines you have to do the setup then roll the car forward onto plates that measure the alignment. If the car puts itself in park it will require another person sitting inside of it to push it forward instead of just getting down to business.
He said it would do it in reverse or drive. So should be good for alignments if neutral doesn't engage the thing. The newer Ram trucks have that auto park feature anyways. Already had to figure that out
That’s because NONE of the shifters in the newer F-150s, whether it be a column shifter or console shifter, are mechanical. Meaning there is no cable connected to the shifters to the transmission. They are purely electronic. There is however a mechanical link to putting the transmissions in a neutral state if there is no battery power or somehow the shifter malfunctions to where you can no longer select anything outside of Park. Some newer model year F-150s have a manual park release cable behind the lower knee bolster panel on the driver side. Some have done away with cable and you’d have to crawl under the truck to move a manual park release lever to specific position and retain it with a bolt in a bolt hole on the side of the transmission case.

It won’t allow you too, just like with a lot of the Chrysler products with electronic shifter you could probably stick your head out of the window or hold down the door ajar switch that’s located on the door jam.

I used to have cars with 3 pedals on the floor and a joystick thingy between the seats. Actually, growing up we had a Chevy pickup truck where the joystick thingy was attached to the steering column and someone named it after a tree or something. Back then there was no “park” on the joystick thingy. We had to secure the vehicle manually by placing the transmission in 1st or reverse, setting the parking brake, and sometimes turn the tires toward or away from the curb. If your vehicle was a piece of shit you might have carried a block of wood to use as a wheel chock. And we also had to remember to turn off the engine. Now if you wanted to lock your vehicle you had to manually push down the lock plunger thingy on each door. And when you closed the door sometimes you had to hold up the outside door handle or that lock button thingy will pop up. And if your vehicle was a piece of shit it probably didn’t lock and you had to worry about someone stealing your little pack of Kleenex, your mom’s pink floral umbrella, and your Dionne Warwick 8 track tape. “Do you know the way to San Jose? I’ve never been so long…” She also sung about putting a hundred down and buying a car and pumping gas. These days you can’t afford a house, car, or gallon of gasoline in San Jose. But if you’re homeless the state will pay you $650 a month to buy drugs and pee on the sidewalk.

Automatic transmission is incapable of putting itself in park unless stopped, you're going to hear a clunking sound coming from the parking pawl trying to engage with no harm done to the transmission.
So glad my 2017 doesn't do this. It's hard to reach the keypad on gated communities in a Superduty without opening the door and leaning out the window. I can still stand on the brake just fine.
RAM has a much wiser solution, it applies the parking break if you open the door when in gear, and if you turn of the engine it puts the truck in park.
Alignments with this feature SUCK. I pulled a super duty on the rack with this shit and was sweating fuckin bullets not being able to see how close I was to one end of the rack
My Cadillac has the same feature. It sounds ridiculous but mistakes can happen! I was at a drive thru and the employee dropped my card on the ground. My first instinct was to open the door and grab it. I did it without thinking… my foot slipped off the brake and the car immediately hit “park” when that happened. Cool feature.

Cool. Should be awesome when it puts it in park at highway speed because you parked in the rain for a few days, and those harness plugs installed by the Friday afternoon guy trying to leave early weren’t weather tight.
This was initially a feature for LEO’s, and was prototyped in the last generation CVPI. The thought was, there had been many incidents of an officer leaping from a vehicle under duress and said vehicle rolled into vehicles/properties not owned by the LEO agency leading to high insurance rates.
Soon they will add a safety feature that won't let you start your car until you solve the CAPTCHA.

Already dealt with this system malfunctioning on a 2023 f150. It's even better because it automatically activates the parking brake at the same time. FPOS was repeated many times as the tow truck was loading it on to a flatbed. 90 days and 3 separate trips to the dealership later it's back in service.
That’s cool. A lot better than that courtesy wipe that never really shuts off, no matter what you do.

My ram a 2020 will do something similar to this. It'll put it back in park and put the e brake on... which is real fun when you are trying to back up a couple inches to hook a trailer up.

Yup sometimes when backing up my trailer I open the door and look out this would prevent me from doing it and I already hate it because my girls Honda Pilot does this shit if you open the door with it in reverse it will shift back into park automatically

Why can't you just use the backup camera? Why do you need the door open? Trucks like this one have fancy cameras that make attaching trailers easy.

Funny story with this, i work at a sewage plant and they give us all f150s, my foreman has a 2021 model. One day i was riding with him to pick up a pump from a repair shop, after leaving my boss stopped to double check the straps (keep in mind this man is 72) as he get out i realize he has the truck in drive still but didn't say anything because im stupid ig, anyway i watch the shifter do this and it blows my mind. Im of course thinking that this man already knew the the truck would do that, so when he gets back in i say "i dint know your truck can put its self in park, thats cool" this man turns to me with a straight face and says "no it cant" after trying to convince him he say "does it really, let me see" so he threw it in drive and opened the door and after he shifted over he just sat there as baffled as i was that the truck could do that.
After the fact i realized that this man casually almost let his truck go into unintentional auto pilot with me and a 15k pump in it.
Having just rebuild the whole column shifter assembly on my 99 f250 i can only imagine what a nightmare this one is to fix

@@clickbaitgod6384 to do an alignment on most modern day alignment machines you have to do the setup then roll the car forward onto plates that measure the alignment. If the car puts itself in park it will require another person sitting inside of it to push it forward instead of just getting down to business.

That’s because NONE of the shifters in the newer F-150s, whether it be a column shifter or console shifter, are mechanical. Meaning there is no cable connected to the shifters to the transmission. They are purely electronic. There is however a mechanical link to putting the transmissions in a neutral state if there is no battery power or somehow the shifter malfunctions to where you can no longer select anything outside of Park. Some newer model year F-150s have a manual park release cable behind the lower knee bolster panel on the driver side. Some have done away with cable and you’d have to crawl under the truck to move a manual park release lever to specific position and retain it with a bolt in a bolt hole on the side of the transmission case.
My 15 year old pathfinder just beeps at me, leaving me to make the decision. This just means someone somewhere has the power to wirelessly take your truck out of gear

It won’t allow you too, just like with a lot of the Chrysler products with electronic shifter you could probably stick your head out of the window or hold down the door ajar switch that’s located on the door jam.

2016 jeep cherokee won't even let you reverse with door open. 2019 ram 2500 with hockey puck shifter automatically goes to Park.
If you open the door and then put it into gear, it will operate as normal. If you put it into gear then open the door it will go into park

I used to have cars with 3 pedals on the floor and a joystick thingy between the seats. Actually, growing up we had a Chevy pickup truck where the joystick thingy was attached to the steering column and someone named it after a tree or something.
Back then there was no “park” on the joystick thingy.
We had to secure the vehicle manually by placing the transmission in 1st or reverse, setting the parking brake, and sometimes turn the tires toward or away from the curb.
If your vehicle was a piece of shit you might have carried a block of wood to use as a wheel chock.
And we also had to remember to turn off the engine.
Now if you wanted to lock your vehicle you had to manually push down the lock plunger thingy on each door.
And when you closed the door sometimes you had to hold up the outside door handle or that lock button thingy will pop up.
And if your vehicle was a piece of shit it probably didn’t lock and you had to worry about someone stealing your little pack of Kleenex, your mom’s pink floral umbrella, and your Dionne Warwick 8 track tape.

FCA cars do this with the dial shifter. It automatically moves if you shut the engine off without being in park. Been doing this for like ten years.
Driveing down the road, and you realize your seat belt is caught in the door so you open it real quick and suddenly you're in park.

My Cadillac has the same feature. It sounds ridiculous but mistakes can happen! I was at a drive thru and the employee dropped my card on the ground. My first instinct was to open the door and grab it. I did it without thinking… my foot slipped off the brake and the car immediately hit “park” when that happened. Cool feature.
