  • "Hustlers" takes place in an interesting time period: Recent enough that it feels kind of like the present day, but just long enough ago that the costumes are noticeably dated.
Striking a balance for this "21st Century Period Piece" is an achievement.

I love that this film can manage to portray women in a profession that revolves around them being objectified without making me feel gross or voyeuristic for watching. Even the cameo roles feel so warm and human. It does give me traumatic flashbacks to the era of low-rise jeans. Yikes.

The clothes in this movie are impressively tacky, but perfectly reflective of the time period. I wonder if in a hundred years those metallic dresses are considered chic like flapper dresses are now. Crazy how the world spins.

This was great! Would you ever do a video on the Birds of Prey Costumes? I thought they were fun and reflective of each character's personality! Also wanted to say I loved your analysis of the Skyfall costumes on your old website. That's when I first started noticing your stuff

Hmm, I have no current plans to do a Birds of Prey ep, although I DID like those costumes! It's a great-looking movie. And thanks so much for following my work!! :)

God I have such vivid memories of mid/late 00s fashions. I honestly can't wait for the kids who are gonna make it look cool. It's gonna be amazing and hilarious to me. Awesome video.

I absolutely LOVE this movie. The costuming was transcendent, reminding me of trends that I'd shoved to the back of my brain (those jeans with the one inch zipper anyone?) and the musical choice of interspersing period pop songs and Chopin's etudes was just masterful. Also, the least offensive use of a dream sequence in a movie - just so punchy and profound.

what a fantastic analysis! I love that you touched upon not only the fact that when it came to awards season, the cast and content of the movie made it such that critics could not sympathise to it compared to their m white, more palatable counterparts, but also there is artistry to tackiness!

Just JLo's entrance makes it worthy, I'm not a fan but I was MESMERIZED by her. A modern Marilyn indeed.

I think you made a mistake in the title! Don't you mean "Late '00s"? Anyway, thanks for this video! I loved what you have to say about what was going on with JLo's incredible coat!

Entertaining and sexy, yes. One of the best or favorite films of anyone? No, not at all.
