NEIGHBORHOODS OF PITTSBURGH - MANCHESTER

  • What a week. Manchester was such a vivid and intense experience. I have a fantasy of buying one of those big ol antique houses and restoring it. Too much time in fantasy land is bad for the soul. What neighborhood should I cover next? I'll be out of town this week but we will resume shorty. I'll keep going as long as folks are enjoying these!

Keep up the amazing series, I personally prefer the fact that you are doing Pittsburgh because there is not many people or films that give it attention like other cities such as New York and such. That being said I will keep watching because I like the perspective you bring to the table and the incredible cinematography.
In short there is a lot of Pittsburgh that I feel like still needs explored but if you want to add a bit of spice with other cities I would watch.

Pittsburgh neighborhoods is *a great series. However, your style is why we are all here. You edit and shot with this super clean and unique style that feels "homemade" but you can tell it takes great skill to achieve. I would love for you to do other locations as well. Maybe do the other city's on like a special once a month or every couple of months. I just want to see you do more videos. You just do whatever feels right. You have a great eye and the reddit **bump will hit you again with the next great series you start. Just keep evolving.

I beg you to keep going as long as possible. I'd watch you go anywhere in and around pittsburgh. I would definitely watch other cities as well. You have honestly changed how I view my city and for the better. My wife and I have started having discussions about moving closer to the city again. We've gotten further away as the years have passed and children have arrived... But after watching your videos, I now feel that we are robbing our kids of all the culture and people that embody our city. I want my kids to know how special this City and its residents truly are. We just found your channel 4 days ago... So it says alot that in 4 days, you have us talking about moving to the city or very close. As of now, we are in the South Hills. We have staid here because of the schools out here. West Jefferson Hills School District has a wonderful curriculum but I wonder now..... What is more important?? Culture or schools... I'd like to have both. Thank you for all the time and effort you put in to these videos, Dean! You are becoming Pittsburghs NEW RICK SEBAK... And in my opinion, there is no higher praise for what you are doing.

Dude I cannot wait to see you advance this series in other cities. You do something insanely valuable, which is show an *internal* perspective of these neighborhoods. Doing these in major cities all around the country could really make people view their neighbors in a much more nuanced, informed light. These videos show nothing but the warmth and optimism that radiates within an array of wildly different American microcultures.

Just discovered your Neighborhoods of Pittsburgh series today. Watched three episodes straight... and you've earned a new sub. I think sticking to Pittsburgh for the time being isn't the worst idea, but in the long term, why limit yourself? You have the talent and personality to make a big impact in YT land, in my opinion. So maybe if you run out of neighborhoods in "Pittsburgh proper", start expanding into the surrounding cities? I'm partial to McKeesport ;). Or even expand into other states, or other towns in PA. Whatever works. You should keep it up either way. Cheers!

Nice one Dean! I'm not from Pittsburgh but appreciate these videos. There is something quite charming and authentic about these old American cities - 19th century architecture, the history, how it used to be vs. now, the mix of people and backgrounds, grit, and charm. I think people appreciate the stories of the locals - helps us to understand what it's really like there. Definitely would like to see this in other American cities, but perhaps only after you go deeper into the Pittsburgh series. Perhaps Cincinnati could be interesting - it shares a lot of similar architecture and characteristics.

Dean, these videos are beautiful. As a recent Pittsburgh transplant that is still working to get settled, this series is informative. It’s also so much more. The Neighborhood series is a collection of short-form documentaries showcasing the nature and dynamic of American residential society, from the human (as opposed to analytic) perspective. The music, cinematography, dialogue, and editing come together perfectly to portray something beautiful about humankind let alone Pittsburgh. I know that that’s probably what you were going for, but I just wanted to let you know that your work is not unappreciated.
That being said, yes, you could successfully do Neighborhood videos in other cities, but personally I’d like to see what else you can do. You’re a creative and talented dude. I can’t wait to check out your other videos and see what you’ll be releasing next... maybe some videos about residential architecture and it’s history? ;)
Thank you for keeping the series going.

See we would tie a thin piece of rope around the top tight, then place pieces of soaked bread in it, submerge the jar in the water, and wait for small fish to go into it and pull the jar up... gotta be real quiet as we layed down in wait.. Dean,
    Bravo sir... Bravo.
As a native Pennsylvanian I was so pleased when these came up randomly in my feed this morning. You are doing such a great and creative thing in this series, I too am trying to make an impact through film/video and I just wanted to know I am awe struck by your videos. Binged every single thing I could find that you have posted to CZcams this morning.
I would love to talk to you (if you have the time) about a few things related to your work and this series. Please drop me a message on here if that is a possibility and we can exchange emails.
    Again, Bravo!

Johnstown has some cool old neighborhoods. Old Westmont, Moxham, Westmont, Ferndale, Brownstown, Southmont, Cambria City, etc.
Lived on Steel Mills for awhile, but place is not in best shape anymore which makes it interesting. Overall, just like anywhere you go, just be cool, talk to neighbors, explain why your there and should be fine.

I'm loving the work that you're doing! I was born in Pittsburgh and have spent decades living in the Bloomfield/Shadyside/Oakland area. Pittsburgh people are my favorite people in the United States of America. That kind of covers it.

Dean, I have to apologize -- I nearly ran you down in the making of this video as you took a shot down Fulton st. across from the school. Now I wish I had stopped to chat so I could have pointed out the places and people I love in Manchester.

I really like these videos. I lived in Squirrel Bill in the early 90s on Bartlett Ave. I loved living in Pittsburgh. I dated a guy in Mt. Lebanon loved that area also. Pittsburgh is a great city. I miss it those were the best times of my life.

The fact that a majority of your video comments are literal paragraphs of praise says a lot, don't you think? You don't see that much on CZcams.
    Keep it up, Bean Dog!

Can you do one one for sharpsburg? The town has a lot of neat history and was neglected for many years, but there is a resurgence of pride and community in it.

Dude, you absolutely have to do FINEVIEW. We have some old footage if you would like to weave a few frames into it as a before an after.
. Fineview is an oasis , all unto itself , and has a Fine View of the burgh.
As far as Manchester goes, it really has changed, and just in time because in the early 70;s they were losing Victorian (and older) homes 2 or 3 per week, if not more. These video are great, I have been trying to promote and share to as many as I can.

Although I do enjoy ALL your videos, I hope you keep producing the Neighborhoods series. I can't wait to see what you do with Shady Side and Squirrel Hill. You might also find Millvale interesting. Technically it's just outside the city limit but its home to Mr. Smalls Theater and some really cool locations to film. Let me know if you would like to be treated to a bowl of Turtle Soup at Grants Bar. 114 Grant Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15209??
    (no peanuts, I promise.)
