They called all Shaivites and Vaishnavites and Indian religions collectively as Hindus and Hinduism from Sanskrit name Sindhu referring to the river Indus.I feel that is what the actor Kamal Hassan is trying to say. The name " hindu", a mispronounced Sanskrit word of "Sindhu", was first used in religious context by a Sebastian Monrique a Christian historian who lived during the 1600AD. So during Raja Raja's time period, there was no religion named Hindu existed.

The movie Ponniyin Selvan (PS1), was the adaptation of the novel Ponniyin Selvan... and in that, the writer Kalki shows Arulmozhi Varman (Raja Raja Chola) as a person who respects other religion and not the one who thinks his religion only is great... in the novel it shows how Arulmozhi fought the war and how he sacrificed his throne.... He built all the temples and serves to Shiva only after his coronation as king. If u want read Udaiyar which is considered as the successor of Ponniyin Selvan where it is mentioned on how devoted Raja Raja Chola was and how he built Brihadeeshwara Temple. And Kalki didn't mention of any Temple or worshipping scenes in the main plot of the story. Already they messed up the story line of Ponniyin Selvan which is of 5 books for making the movie of just 2. They failed about the character building itself at the first place... and worring that they didn't show him as worshiping shiva like bahubali is so silly. Coz the writer portray him as a good human and then a devotee (which he was after his coronation).

The movie Ponniyin Selvan was based on the book of the same name. In the novel it's never shown that Raja Raja or Arul Mozhi Varma was a Shiva bhakt. There is not even one scene of him worshipping Lord Shiva. According to the novel, Arul Mozhi takes inspiration from Buddhist viharas and tells his friends that he will build a huge temple like these big viharas. Guess the book should have been read completely before claiming that the movie doesn't have a scene of Raja Raja worshipping Shiva
Also this movie portrays the age before Raja raja cholan gets crowned as King. The part 2 ends with Uttama cholan getting crowned. So it is logical much of his devotion life is not portrayed in the movie.
There is one scene in the book where he speaks impassionately about how he wants to build shiva temples as massive as what Sri Lankans have built for Buddha.. Everyone else from his family are shown to be great worshipers of Shiva... Especially the future king whi who literally works as flower guy in the Shiva temple... But Arunmozhi is away from the is and in his weird phase of life... It's after the sucession crisis is taken care of and everyone is married and happy when he really embraces his roots

During the period of Rajaraja Chola, there was no word Hindu. When the British entered the Indian subcontinent, they introduced the word Hindu because of the Sindhu river. During the Chola period, there were only a few religions in India. They are Saivism, Jainism, Vaishnavism and Buddhism. Therefore in that sense, Raja Raja Chola was not a Hindu but a Saivite as we would say Veerashaiva Lingayatism. Here the Veerasaivas haven't consider themselves as Hindus. Also, the kings of the great mighty Chola dynasty empire were always an ardent devotees of Lord Shiva.....

Keerthi.. Just one correction in what you explained. Emperor Raja Raja chola was a "shaivait", who used to worship Lord Shiva. He reign was around 1000AD. The name " hindu", a mispronounced Sanskrit word of "Sindhu", was first used in religious context by a Sebastian Monrique a Christian historian who lived during the 1600AD. So during Raja Raja's time period, there was no religion named Hindu existed.
Oxygen was called oxygen afterwards. It doesn't mean it didn't existed. You call hindu, sanatan , a shavaite, or something else. You are under same umbrella.

What a shame Raja Raja as father of Indian navy doesn’t get mentioned by the present politics . Raja Raja and his son Rajendra Chola had such a powerful Navy that ruled the seas . The chola Naval Armada ruled the trade economic zone from the china sea to the palk strait and beyond across up to Maladivies and Lakshadweep . Andaman was their stop over naval base . They transported hundreds and hundreds 0f battle elephants , horses and soldiers across the high seas with ease . It would be a fitting tribute to rename the aircraft carriers of the Indian Navy as aircraft carrier Raja Raja and the second aircraft carrier as Rajendra .
We need to give due recognition and credit to the greatest of all kings Raja Raja meaning king of kings .

The movie Ponniyin Selvan (PS1), was the adaptation of the novel Ponniyin Selvan... and in that, the writer Kalki shows Arulmozhi Varman (Raja Raja Chola) as a person who respects other religion and not the one who thinks his religion only is great... in the novel it shows how Arulmozhi fought the war and how he sacrificed his throne.... He built all the temples and serves to Shiva only after his coronation as king. If u want read Udaiyar which is considered as the successor of Ponniyin Selvan where it is mentioned on how devoted Raja Raja Chola was and how he built Brihadeeshwara Temple. And Kalki didn't mention of any Temple or worshipping scenes in the main plot of the story. Already they messed up the story line of Ponniyin Selvan which is of 5 books for making the movie of just 2. They failed about the character building itself at the first place... and worring that they didn't show him as worshiping shiva like bahubali is so silly. Coz the writer portray him as a good human and then a devotee (which he was after his coronation).

The movie Ponniyin Selvan was based on the book of the same name. In the novel it's never shown that Raja Raja or Arul Mozhi Varma was a Shiva bhakt. There is not even one scene of him worshipping Lord Shiva. According to the novel, Arul Mozhi takes inspiration from Buddhist viharas and tells his friends that he will build a huge temple like these big viharas. Guess the book should have been read completely before claiming that the movie doesn't have a scene of Raja Raja worshipping Shiva
Also this movie portrays the age before Raja raja cholan gets crowned as King. The part 2 ends with Uttama cholan getting crowned. So it is logical much of his devotion life is not portrayed in the movie.
There is one scene in the book where he speaks impassionately about how he wants to build shiva temples as massive as what Sri Lankans have built for Buddha.. Everyone else from his family are shown to be great worshipers of Shiva... Especially the future king whi who literally works as flower guy in the Shiva temple... But Arunmozhi is away from the is and in his weird phase of life... It's after the sucession crisis is taken care of and everyone is married and happy when he really embraces his roots

During the period of Rajaraja Chola, there was no word Hindu. When the British entered the Indian subcontinent, they introduced the word Hindu because of the Sindhu river. During the Chola period, there were only a few religions in India. They are Saivism, Jainism, Vaishnavism and Buddhism. Therefore in that sense, Raja Raja Chola was not a Hindu but a Saivite as we would say Veerashaiva Lingayatism. Here the Veerasaivas haven't consider themselves as Hindus. Also, the kings of the great mighty Chola dynasty empire were always an ardent devotees of Lord Shiva.....

I think that the real problem is that we Indians are studying the history written by Europeans and Communists. Due to this movie, at least all Indians are discussing and learning about our grand history.
