    This is actually a good move for Fujifilm to skip the saturated FF market. APS-C for a quality compact cam and MF for high end photography.

      @etismyname Před 5 lety +1

      "High-end" photography (for MF) has a very small market size, most for high end commerical fashion/portrait. And these users I can safely say are already using Phrase One cameras.
      It will be great for landscape photographer too, but most working photographers probably don't need this resolution especially at this cost, lens lineup matters a lot more.

    Being used to shooting 6x7 medium format (on film), all the digital medium formats seem more like slightly enhanced full-frame or 35mm+, rather than true medium format. For most (medium format loving) people, I think it makes sense to stay with full-frame until real medium format digital cameras come out.

    • @msandersen
      @msandersen Před 5 lety

      element4element4 - What is “real” digital medium-format to you? A sensor physically 6x7” or larger? Isn’t 100Mp files big enough for you? It has more detail and probably dynamic range than your film 6x7 film camera as it is. For fashion and landscape photographers, that’s plenty big. I suspect you think digital medium-format has to have a sensor the exact same size as medium-format film in order to call itself medium-format, which is missing the point and not understanding where digital is at. I appreciate film and people who love it, but for commercial purposes it is antiquated and superseded by digital in every way.

    • @element4element4
      @element4element4 Před 5 lety

      @@msandersen
      I was making two different (slightly unrelated) points. I was not comparing quality of digital sensors to medium format film. I don't shoot film for commercial purposes. I just happen to enjoy the process of shooting film and printing in the dark room, not so much due to resolution/dynamic range/etc.
      1) My first point was that it's strange to call these sensors "medium format", as for more than a century medium-format (afaik) has meant shooting on 120/220 film. The smallest medium format has been (I believe) 6x4.5, but there are also other standards like 6x6, 6x7, 6x9 and (rare) 6x12 formats. I just find it confusing that these digital cameras are called medium-format as that seems to imply (to me) they are at-least 6x4.5 and therefore gather way more light than 35mm. However that's not the case, they are just slightly larger than 35mm and their advantages over 35mm sensors are thus minor. I think it's less misleading to call anything between 35mm (full-frame) and 6x4.5 for "35mm+" or something like that.
      2) Besides gathering more light, there are many nice things about "real" medium format film/sensor sizes. For example you can take fairly wide-angle shots with a very shallow depth of field or take wide-angle shot with a lot less distortion (because it will be at a longer focal length). However modern lenses are much faster and more optically corrected than they used to be, and this point might become less and less relevant over time.

  • @jacobl6572
    @jacobl6572 Před 5 lety +2

    I cannot think of how I could use that much resolution. Larger prints are generally viewed farther back unless you are making wall paper murals, then you could just merge photos. Tony did a nice video on that. If you use the right lens you do not have to crop a lot. Even prints off my 54" wide format printer look great at just 16 megs with my Df, again because the angle of comfortable viewing forces you to step back,,,,unless you are the kind of person who loves the front row in a movie theater. Taking about large prints, billboard prints are viewed from afar. Many billboard printers do not print super high res and I never sent one out over 10 megs, yet they look crisp from 50 ft or more. Med format I used to use, was made for film since 35 mm lacked detail and had too much grain for larger prints, but today's digital has solved that. Some marketing of med format is riding on a nostalgia factor in my opinion, not out of the need it once had.

    Hey Tony, you and I have one thing in common and one difference...We both love superb detail in our landscape images, and you can afford this GFX100 (with lenses)!! :-) Actually, I find that the "meager" Fuji X-T3 can produce 24" x 36" poster prints with quite amazing detail and sharpness (using a solid tripod, good technique and post processing)...and that's without "pixel shift"! Although, for my product photography, I employ "focus merge", in which I take a few dozen images of the product at different focus points, combine the images in Affinity Photo, and do final processing in Photoshop. In this way, I can create the sharpest possible images (especially with the ultra-sharp Fujinon 80mm f/2.8 Macro!), that IMHO, rival any FF camera system, and may even approach this medium format camera, in terms of detail and image sharpness....sort of a "poor man's" approach to medium format image quality. @@ronyedin (of course this is just my opinion)-I would like to know just how modern day digital photographers would have survived taking sports photos “back in the day” when you had to make each frame count. I used to do a lot of photography-sports and wildlife included- with just 1 frame at a time. Did I miss perfect shots? Sure, but as skills and experience increased, hit rates increased. I relate it to firearms and marksmanship. Before the military went to full auto weapons, a soldier had to make each shot count. Marksmanship was an important skill. Full auto came along and marksmanship faded and the rounds fired to get a hit increased dramatically. Film cameras require a photographer to have a lot of patience and practice to be really good. Digital photography has made it too easy to just “spray and pray”. I’m not saying we should go back to giving our military muzzle loading flintlocks, likewise, I am not saying that we should eliminate a fast frame rate on a digital camera. What I am saying is that five frames per second may not be the fastest, but it is not as slow as some people seem to think. Do I wish it was faster? I wouldn’t turn down an opportunity to have it be faster, but I wouldn’t turn down an opportunity to use it at 5fps either. Happy “shooting”😎😎😎

    Tony, you made mention of depth-of-field considerations with the larger sensor. Please understand and make it clear that depth of field is a function of aperture and image size on the sensor. Focal length DOES NOT affect depth-of-field! It is true that image compression and rendering of perspective will be affected by focal length but NOT depth-of-field. This is physics and laws of optics.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  Před 5 lety

      At its simplest, DoF is a function of two properties: aperture and image magnification. Anything that impacts the image magnification thus also impacts DoF, including sensor size, focal length, etc.

      @cmoore7723 Před 5 lety

      @@TonyAndChelsea Tony, while it's true that focal length can affect image magnification it does not affect depth of field. This is a function of the laws of optics. Here's a way to prove it to yourself...
      With a 50 mm lens and a 100 mm lens place the 50 mm lens so the same subject is the same size on the sensor as the image created with the 100 mm lens. (about twice as close)
      At a given f-stop the depth-of-field will be IDENTICAL The perspective and image compression will be different with the two lenses but the depth-of-field will be the same. Most professionals I talk to don't understand this fact -- which is governed by the laws of physics and optics.

    I´m trying to find out how much is the DLA (Diffraction Limited Aperture) for this camera, as no one is talking about that. I believe that with a pixel pitch of 3.76um (even with a BSI sensor) the DLA will be considerably low, wich can reduce the full potential (and the image quality) of this sensor in lower aperture. What is your opinion about this, and also how the sensors tech will overcome the physics?

    The GFX100 lacks a high res pixel shift mode on the initial release, thus even when doing still-life, you can't do a pixel shift to get an equivalent 400 megapixel image. This means that you will still struggle to do much more than an 8x10 print, or share photos on the web. Overall, they need to add a high res mode.
