Hey everyone, let me clarify that this video is in no way meant to shame, harm, disrespect people involved with the show. Especially the actors who I can empathize with since I auditioned for this project myself, and we are only hired to read lines and not create the shows we work on. This is meant to be an objective review of what I saw in the show and my interpretation of the meaning behind it.
Also to my confusion about the tampons episode, I honestly forgot all about Pads and thats why I was trippin I think I mixed them both up in my head while talking, so yeah thats why I was confused my bad.
If you enjoyed this full review, be sure to like/comment/share this video for the algorithm thanks.

Great review of the show. I watched all the episodes and you made some key points on parts that stuck out, not in good ways. It made me think of a black version of Southpark/ The PJs. Southpark because of the racists stereotype situations and the PJs because it was centered in the Projects.

Family guy is parody. I've never seen Seth McFarland successfully write a satire. This Good Times netflix show is parody. But they're talking about it like it was suppose to be satire. 30:15 just want to shed light on women not letting girls use tampons. Some look at it like you are sticking something in there and it's kind of like loosing your virginity. Also the first period is a sign a girls hormones are kicking in and she could be fertile. So in general there is a constant shame for black girls around this age. Everything you do could be looked at as being fast and your parents, especially your mom, is paranoid about you being fast. For example, I would be shamed for taking a nap and mom would ask if I was pregnant because I took one smfh.

30:00 as a black woman, this absolutely happens. And I'm not trying to be too graphic, but my mother initially wouldn't let me use tampons either. It was related to being "fast" or "sexually active" and it's mostly from super religious parents/grandparents.
There was a girl in middle school who had that problem, leaking everywhere, and she was bullied for it. I mean the entire chair she sat on was covered. And I don't know her personally or what her home life was like, but that shit really does happen. Thank God we were at an all girls school because the boys would've been RELENTLESS. Girls, we kinda understand leakage and everything, but boys would've roasted her to the ends of the earth.
That's my two-cents, but its absolutely something that young black women deal with when it comes to periods and period products.

Brian Ashburn: White. Young Love, I Feel Bad, A.P. Bio. Wrote episode 3 (the period episode) and episode 8 (the superhero episode). There were 3 Black women on staff. Why was he given the period episode to write?
Joshua Krist: undetermined. Legends of Chamberlain Heights, My Wife and Kids, Dawson's Creek.
Eric Lev: likely Black. The Game, One on One, My Wife and Kids, Legends of Chamberlain Heights.

Eric Monte who wrote and directed the film ‘Cooley High’ created Good Times based on his life in the Cabrini Green projects in Chicago (the setting of the original show) and Norman Lear ( being the established Name) got the credit.
Eric Monte also created The Jeffersons and What’s Happening tv shows along with actor Michael Evans (who played Lionel Jefferson and gave his real name to the Michael character on Good Times) but Norman Lear took the credit for all of it. Eric Monte was blackballed by Hollywood for suing for his rights and still dislikes Norman Lear.

the weird thing is some of the stuff in this show happened in the original, but they just ruined the message and made a mockery of it. james had hypertension, jj got blickied down when he was forced to join a gang, he worked at a chicken place, was an artist and made a painting of himself as a superhero named dynoman. but the original show taught and informed us about those topics. this show just makes fun of those issues and teaches viewers nothing. that and i don't know if they were trying to do cheap callbacks or were just copying the original show's homework.
and yeah i wouldn't be shocked if norman actually produced all of those shows and had a hand in their scripts. probably not because he wanted to make an original black show from scratch though. most popular black sitcoms were just spinoffs of white shows. the jeffersons was a spinoff off all in the family, good times was a spinoff of maude, and family matters was a spinoff of perfect strangers.

So I did a little digging into the IMDB of this show. This stuff is actually really eye opening to why the show is so…bad.
**tl;dr the show creators literally make edgy racist shows for a living.**
The main writer for the episodes, Devon Shepard, is married to the show creator Ranada Shepard. The most notable show he was an Executive Producer on was Legends of Chamberlain Heights. It was a really edgy Comedy Central show from like 2016 that’s basically is this exact same humor. Full of egregious racial stereotypes of black people and left leaning people. It’s also (in my opinion) one of the ugliest shows I’ve ever seen in my life. Like it makes The Nutshack look like the Vatican.
Devon also seems to have brought several of the writers from that show onto this one, and they worked on all 10 episodes. Devon and Ranada to my knowledge are black (not that black people cant make content that’s racist towards their own race) but the writers they brought on from that show are indeed white. So make of that what you will, but the minimum is that for sure every single episode had at least 3 white people working on them as the writers.
To me that explains why the racist jokes are so…weirdly specifically racist. Like the “color people time” joke. Literally no black person makes that joke genuinely, but it does sound like something a really racist person who was told in the writers room to make the most edgy humor possible would write. It really feels like they were told to just regurgitate every single joke about black people they could come up with and decided to make the show.

Enslaved Africans weren't allowed to swim, just like they weren't allowed to read, because of escape and 2. the descendants of Enslaved Africans, not being allowed to swim in private or public pools (which their tax dollars were paying for btw). I got my first Red Cross swimming license when I was either 13 or 14. The Black kids I grew up w/knew how to swim. FYI, that final scene, guaranteed, was written by someone of a much older age than the demographic they’re apparently looking for. It’s a reference to that old show, Dallas where J.R., the main character and villain, was shot at the end of one season. The headlines “who shot JR” were a huge thing at the time. Your dad might have remembered the show or headlines but you probably weren’t even born or were an infant at the time that was happening, and the relevance has long since expired. I’d bet that that episode was written by someone 50 or older.

Yes! And The Simpsons reference JD makes was a spoof of that. But it was a weird way to end the episode and series. I watched the first couple of episodes to try to “give it a chance”. YNB keeps telling people to watch all 10 like it will make sense but it does not. They are supposed to be coming for the systems not us, but the show does come for black people and hard. Whatever the point was is missed. Like this commentary says, anything that may have been funny or positive is lost in the mix of all the negative, unfunny aspects. I let the rest play in the background. I missed the chicken episode and only caught the end when Junior says he’s Mother Clucker and makes the chicken noise and was nope I do not need to play that back.

i think the period=ho thing is that one misconception that's originated in Christian culture (it's also referenced in that movie Carrie, where she freaked out over her first period because her highly religious mom taught her the wrong ideas) where bleeding from the vagina is associated with losing your virginity.. because old fashioned Christians believe that all women bleed at their first time, and only their first time... no joke, in those times (when Carrie was made), women were even shunned for not bleeding on their first time because "oh i guess you already lost your virginity before marriage, huh?" now i want to add, i assume most modern day Christians do not believe this anymore.. but it definitely was a thing back in the day.. or at least, that's what was taught in my history class (and what i picked up on watching old movies)

They did this show all wrong and they should have taken it more seriously...like a MODERN FAMILY type format, a half hour comedy drama focusing on the next generation and bring back Jimmy walker, Bern Nadette Stanis and Ralph Carter
not a cartoon but live action
why not focus on the three different households of the 3 original Evans children, but not in the projects...we did that, you can still struggle and not be in the projects
    maybe...
JJ is an succesful owner of a black owned comic book company living in a condo, JJ was the ladies man back in the day...maybe make him 3x's divorced and he's trying to mend a relationship with his kids
Thelma, is living in the suburbs of Chicago now. She's a widow now and her daughter and grandkids live with her, she lives in a nice house now because her husband (Keith) was a succesful football player and commentator in the NFL. She took care of Florida until the day she passed.
I know Michael wanted to be on the Supreme court, but I actually see Michael becoming a lawyer and activist staying in Chicago helping inner city youth of unjust crimes.
Florida and Willona stayed best friends until they both passed, Penny kinda turned into the nosy neighbor like her mother (and dating different men) and is pretty much at Thelmas house all the time (also playing the aunty role). I can actually see Thelma and penny becoming best friends (the new Florida and Willona)
This could have been done great and they fouled it up with a BS cartoon with the new family staying in the same damn apartment in the projects...singing with roaches and a drug dealing baby, REALLY???

Congratulations on your channel. Your Dad brought so much love, light and laughter and i wish you all the success in your endeavors. Keep your integrity by all means. This review tells me that you already know when we're being made fun of, our struggles made light of, our people stereotyped into a monolith, being portrayed as dumb, shallow, lacking wherewithal and general common sense. I hate this show with the passion of a thousand suns. I can't support anyone who partook. The ancestors already took Steph out of play off contention😂. This type of imagery goes world wide. I hope people keep up the pressure. When the NAACP has to write a letter about how demeaning this is, it's worse than we think.

I grew up in Sumner Housing in the 80/90s and that shit was bad, and this looked like a mockery of those of us who grew up in the projects.
Sorry, but I am going to blame the actors a little, you would never see Jewish or Muslim (including the black ones) actors doing shit like this about their people.

To keep us out of shared pools, the started closing the public ones. Then the rumor pops up that we cant swim anyway.

Aside from the irony of trashing shows you were almost on, I think the studio was banking on McFarlanes history with Norman Lear riffs like Family Guy which in itself is a spoof of All In The Family. What's sad, is the fact that they could have done the same thing and frame it as a spoof, which it honestly is. The trouble overall being, these botched black stereotypes were already proven not to work with Cleveland Show but they copied the format anyway.

Had a feeling that people would compare this to bebes kids and from what I’ve gathered in so far people consider bebes kids a classic even though it is rife with stereotypes, so are stereotypes only good if they’re done correctly or if people find them amusing?? Anyway, this reboot does look terrible no matter what it’s visually unappealing and the jokes look like they fall really flat, and Seth MacFarlane is the most arrogant piece of shit in Hollywood thinking that just because his name is attached to some thing that every idea that he comes up with will be a success

Tampons do help with periods. But because they go into the vagina(i know graphics but) people associate them with losing your virginity and having sex because the hymn maybe broken, hence she made her a pad instead because they are worn externally. Thats basically the stereotype amongst women when it comes to starting with tampons. Its not true but some people believe it. Also the mom was warning her about getting your first period because that means you can get pregnant from that point on but she didnt want her daughter to have sex and get pregnant at 13. So thats the story with episode number 3.

I haven’t watched the show but have listened to a few reactions. I appreciate your longer look at it as it provides more context for some of the other criticisms I’ve heard. It sounds like there were some interesting topics to explore (gentrification, in-group monitoring…) but everything used to explore them didn’t deliver on the potential: trampling down instead of lifting up.
Definitely some voice actors I’m familiar with and enjoy, but not sure how they got involved. Appreciated your perspective on that though, and focusing that these choices were made primarily in the writers’ room.
It’s a shame to have it under the banner of Good Times. It would have been interesting to hear those development meetings. How was it pitched originally? Who was in the room? Did it change dramatically through production (particularly writing) or was this the initial intent?
Anyways, thanks again for your thoughts.

I haven't seen the show and don't plan to (a drug dealing baby...why?) but some of the stuff you said about periods - yeah, it's true (not absolutely but for a lot of girls, yeah) - it's not just okay now your body is doing this other thing, it's a whole lot of socially weighted things; such as, the tampons bad argument (and not just because of those toxic shock warnings on the labels but because it's inserted and a pad is not), the way your body is now perceived as the opposite of what was young and innocent in you (for a lot it's when the relationship between mother and daughter changes, it's when they introduce the 'danger' your body now poses because, yes, now you can get pregnant and some mothers (more than mothers but I'm emphasizing mothers because they went through it too) do frame it that way and you feel like you're doing something wrong though you haven't), the accidents in public places (ugh, yeah) and I believe there is something called a free bleeding movement that might resonate with an uber-radical character like the one you described. I mean, I can't speak to the presentation on the show...but these issues do exist in the space between girlhood and womanhood. That's actually interesting that they attempted to tackle that though not if they just made a gross joke of it. Only posted this long ass comments cause you seemed confused on this point and open to a woman's pov.
