  • Fiji is a nation in the Pacific Ocean, far off the coast of Australia. More than a third of Fiji's population is Indian by origin. At one point, Indians numbered more than the indigenous Fijians.
But, how did this happen? How did such a large ethnic Indian population come to inhabit the islands so far away from Indian shores?
In this video we explain how it happened.

The abolishment of slavery from Africa, did not mean the end of slavery, it was just rebranded indentured labour and the slave supply chains changed its sources from Africa to India and business continued as usual. My grandparents arrived from India in Surinam tricked. They were fortunate to land on a coffee plantation. Employment under the dutch colonial masters on a sugar plantation was equal to the death penalty. The Indians that went to both Fiji and Suriname came from the same areas of mostly Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, and we can communicate with each other in bhojpuri.

Back in those days our Indian friends were similar to skilled workers/migrant workers like we have today in Australia. They were useful in jobs where locals are uninterested or unskilled at therefore the indenture labourers were critical to the business of supplying sugar cane to Australia & New Zealand at the time.
Under the British Ruling of Fiji before independence, Indo Fijians mainly were sugar cane farmers and on the Fijians side some were in military and other occupancies but not sugar-cane farming lol. The Itaukei people were not lazy like some would make out to be the case. I guess it's fair to say, the mentality of Itaukei at the time, would be like Why should you work for the white men when you have the whole land, forest, river and oceans to fetch food from with the help of the village.
Fiji today is grateful to the contribution of the girmitiyas and their descendants to our economy at large. They are made for business operation and I personally love their mind set and the will to achive the impossible. This is not to say Kaiviti can not do the same, no. Itaukei are very capable bunch when they are put under pressure...

Saying that the Indians got into indentured labour by choice is like saying that migrant workers who go to the UAE go there by choice. However yes it is stupid that the Indians even in Fiji continue to practise the caste system despite all what they have been through. Where I live in the UK it is more or less the same situation with regards to Pakistanis and Indians. They still continue to practise their class/ caste based attitudes well into the third generation. This is especially evident when they reach middle management in the work place and the way in which they treat their employees. They ironically benefit from the upwards mobility system of the UK but do not reciprocate when they reach to the top. What is especially ironic is their treatment of other minorities particularity black people.

Slavery yr cici, were your girmit grandfather captured, locked in chains, forced onto ship, sold in overseas slave markets, forced to work without any rights, wages etc, forced identity change? Indians were contracted labourers moving around the colonies and working for payment. Many returned to India after contract then returned on new contract. They were not slaves and many decided to stay in the colonies because of better living conditions rather than return to the slums of Calcutta...current generation of Indians living in former colonies believe they are victims the girmit system but in reality are victims of their grandparents decisions to seek a better life in a foreign country. Better if current girmit grandchildren apply in mass to Modi to migrate back to India because Fijians certainly do not want civilized racist Dalits in their midst.

Our Fiji my arse ! Where did you come from? Did you just appear during the last volcanic eruption. You did come from somewhere. You should consider yourself lucky that the Indians were brought in there to work because you cunts were fucken lazy . If the Indians weren’t there you would still be hanging off the tree’s scratching your arse . Even after all these years you still can’t run your country because you are still uneducated dumb and stupid. Just imagine if the Indians were allowed to run the country it would have been thriving. India itself is a good example, 4th largest economy in the world, 4 th ranked military, one of the largest space programs. So get off your high horse and fix your canoe in case there is a sunami and you have to row away. Meanwhile fix your poverty ( up to 60 %) fix your drug problem. You should compare yourself to Mauritius similar history ,except majority of the population are Indians and the country is thriving.

Yup lucky they didn’t. Instead , they are the top businessmen of Fiji . No matter where they go , Indians end up leading the business sector. I live in a western country and almost every Indian I know are successful people. My children go to a private school and all the top achievers of that school were Indians and Chinese . Indians will survive and are not people who live on handouts . They are leaders , not followers.

Indian diaspora around the world cannot lose their Indian citizenship. There is even an Indian government ministry which takes care of this. Also Indians in Fiji should blame their grandparents for signing up to the indentured labor program and they should blame the British and Indian government if they felt hard done by in terms of wages and conditions agreed to. Its true nearly all land are owned by the Fijians and a small share of freehold are owned by rich Indians. Besides, Fiji was the last colony to be merged into the Indentured labour system after the Deed of Cession and last only 37 years. Some current Fiji citizens have been living overseas longer than that. As for Fiji, the current generation Indians do not want to work in the sugar cane fields but look to migrate out of the Fiji to either Australia, New Zealand, Canada etc which is better for the next generation. Many have gone back to India to start over. Also it is a white racist comment to say Bligh discovered Fiji, discounting the existence of Fijians who have been there far longer that 30,000 years as limits of modern historical carbon dating proved.

really, why blame our forefathers who were innocent, tricked & sent in a ship to Fiji by the Brits to work under the slavery, chained, tortured, starved to cultivate the Fijian bushlands, they were pillars of what Fiji is today, otherwise Fiji would have been a bushland, as far as I know most Indians are highly educated so they can migrate to other countries where their skills are recognised, they toil & study hard to become scientists, doctors, lawyers, accountants, engineers etc for brighter future, and that is why they have maximum of 2 to 3 children, therefore drop in population & rise in migration

They were tricked. They were told Fiji is nearby in Indian Ocean. That it is a land of milk and honey and gold could be found by the road side.
That they could send money home and make regular trips back home.
The journey took two months. Once there they were enslaved and helpless .
The British were very cunning. The contract was with a subsidiary Co. And they dissolved it after Indenture ship.
Today Indians are enjoying a new constitution . The electoral system is of their choice. The De' Hont method.
No more race riots. Military given powers to protect the nationals.

    • @willtamani1765
      @willtamani1765 Před 10 měsíci +1

@@aniltachand2694 I don't think they were tricked..many indentured Indians came from the West Indies to work in Fiji, many went back to India and signed a new contract to come back to Fiji. So these contracts were done voluntarily by them and the Indian Foreign office made sure no abuses were perpetrated on them. The real slaves in Fiji were the Kanaks who were snatched from their islands forcefully and shipped to Australia and some to Fiji to work as slaves in the Copra, Cotton and Sugar plantations before Fiji became a British colony many years later. Their descendants are still in Fiji. Indians are also very lucky to gain Fiji citizenship at independence in 1969 because that was not part of the agreement at the Deed of Session. For Fijians, the British are to blame for the mess they created in Fiji.

@@willtamani1765 What kind of crap are you talking about here? Indian Foreign office made sure there were no abuses perpetrated? You know very well that is a lie, amongst all the Indentured labour countries, Fiji had a highest rate of suicide, particularly within the ships that came from Madras. The amount that came from the west indies was so minuscule to the general population and there was a hindrance at every possibility to return back to India which included paying for your own return ticket or waiting for a "full ship" with all the correct documents. This made it basically impossible to return. It seems that you have an agenda here in painting my forefathers in a negative light and excusing the system which brought us there. Fact is that our contributions and sacrifices to Fiji are now starting to be recognized and appreciated, however there is still a long way to go. There should also be an admission of guilt from Australians and the Gujarati businessmen whom exploit our labour in the private sector even till this day.
