âą Make It Work (Daft Pun...
-------------------------------
Daft Punk are no more. The news arrives eight years following Random Access Memories. A retro-leaning record that pays homage to the past while still managing to sound fresh and exciting. Daft Punk have always managed to treat nostalgia as a weapon in their toolkit rather than solely clinging to the past or being grim over the future.
Throughout their career, the electronic-duo have been a bridge between the digital and the analog. Using electronic sounds alongside real instruments, they appealed to both the hardcore club scene as well as listeners who werenât even into electronic music to begin with -- becoming manys personal gateway into the genre. They served as the representation of âelectronic musicâ to the masses, merely because they were making simple, catchy and easy-to-love pop tunes.
In particular, their 2001 album Discovery would alter the perception of what electronic music could be: beautifully written and crafted -- yet fully capable of getting a dance floor moving. The duo proved an ability of invoking the same emotions in house as in any other kind of music. Combine that with their perfect marriage of genres, mystique, aesthetic and technology, Daft Punk brought electronic dance music to the mainstream in a way that nobody has since.
Letâs unmask the album that defined Daft Punkâs musical identity: Discovery.

another day, another reason to cry about Daft Punk's breakup
Real talk.
aah i felt that
It's so true
I KNOW.
Retirement***
Iâm just now getting into video editing. You make this shit look easy. Like...how?
Presets, mr horse plugin, and lots of Energy drinks ;)
Straight up some of the best visuals of any yt channel. I donât give two shits about like 90% of the topics he talks about but the vids are so high quality
@@ArthurChociai none of the above surprisingly
@@Middle8 sir, I admire you
@@Middle8 Just a ton of Skillshare
A fun fact for anyone who didn't know: the third member of that pre-Daft Punk band Darlin' was Phoenix guitarist Laurent Brancowitz. The band had a reunion (so to speak) in 2010 when Phoenix played at Madison Square Garden and Daft Punk joined them during the encore.
Phoenix and daft punk always felt like they were on different sides of the same spectrum
this blows my mind
That was also the last time Daft Punk played to a paying crowd.
yeah, I learned that a few months ago when researching stuff about Phoenix, cool band btw I recommend their stuff
Damn damn damn that is amazing! i love Pheonix, wish i could have been their to witness it live
Crazy, I just listened to this for the first time last night. Something About Us literally had me wiping away tears. I once assumed Daft Punk was JUST dance music. How ignorant I was.
Love that track :)
"Something About Us" makes me tear up every time I listen to it. It has a new meaning each time you listen to it. Sometimes it makes me nostalgic for the bygone days of my childhood. Sometimes it makes me think about lost love and how some things just don't work out. Sometimes it makes me downright sad but it always gives me hope that better days will come. It's a goddamn masterpiece and one of the best song to exist period.
Great video! Particularly loved the way you so smoothly demonstrated the sampling on âOne More Timeâ. A fitting tribute video! đđ

another channel with basically the same visuals. I wish more people showed samples in this way. much more appealing than just playing audio back to back
@@pentexsucks43 who plays audio back to back? That sounds really unappealing đ
@@Bandstand *wink wonk*
wish he gave credit/a shoutout to tracklib for that bit tbh
@@Atraira my thoughts exactly
Daft Punk was the reason I ever began to listen to music. They have been and will forever will be my favorite band. RIP Robots.
Same
Same!
âOne More Timeâ now has a hint of melancholy to it. Weâll miss you, you Funky Robots
they won the game man, having been one of the most successful artists ever, changing music history forever and inspiring millions of music lovers. on top of all that they went out on their own terms, no bad break up, no arguments, no disputes. they won the game.
No epstein type business either thank god
100%
Human After Allâs an underrated album which showcased Daft Punkâs heavier side. Robot Rock, despite being lazy when it comes to the sampling, is still one of my favorite songs by them
There's some good stuff there, but it's a repetitive mess. It's like they thought the middle section on Discovery was good and made an entire album like that.
I'd also say Human After All had a bigger influence in ushering all the dirty Electro of the mid & late 00s than Discovery
Itâs a bit lazy,
@@TrueFaith94 yeah its like what house was becoming
I don't understand why robot rock is so appreciated, when it's really repetitive and the coolest thing on that song (the main riff) is completely stealed. I know that they always sampled, but songs such as One more Time creat something new sampling, robot rock isn't something new to me
Their Tron Legacy soundtrack is one of the best scores I've heard in cinema. They also had a guest appearance in that movie as themselves. Truly a unique duo.
These bad boys had da perfect career on every levels : 4 perfect albums, live gigs, incredible costumes and masks and perfect image
âPerfect albumsâ
Even a soundtrack too
Seriously. Their entire career is remarkable and all they have the utmost respect from everyone.
lets just ignore Human after All, sure dude.
@@mtrps_ That's a freacking lit record
3:11 this was just mindblowingly good
Brother I strongly agree, this amazed me
i can't stop replaying that part help
Came here to say just that đ
its so clear that you havent seen tracklib's youtube channel yet.
Daft Bunk will never be forgotten.
Gonna miss Daft Bunk manđđ
@@doubleyell_ Long live Daft Bunk.
Ah Yes, Daft Bunk.
always dafting bunking in my house
The Bunk will live on in our hearts!
Face to Face has the most exquisite usage of samples.
That is the magic (and incredible talent) of Todd Edwards. His sampling is unrivalled. He also sounds great on the vocals too. Daft Punk picked a legend to work with for good reason.
Im amazed at how much original music they created based on samples
Check out Since I Left You by the avalanches
Discovery is legitimately the only album I can listen to all the way through without skipping a track. I'm so devastated that I will never be able to see them live.
Iâm still very sad about their break up. Theyâre a huge part of my childhood and shaped my taste in music and art.
Remember just laying in my bed with lights off listening one more time. Thank you Daft Punk for all the memories.
My favorite song by them is Veridis Quo. Not a common one, but the music video paired with the song tells a heartbreaking story without saying anything.
Mate, loved how you visualised the samples.
daft punk will be gods amongst the music industry. they will live long in history, i can garentee it.
They didn't really do music for the fame or money that's why daft punk is awesome too
The most beautiful love letter to the duo who brought funk, disco, rock, house and so much more together. They'll be missed.
They also knew how to make an AMAZING live show that was a goddamn experience that you couldn't get anywhere else. Alive 2007 was truly something I wished I could have seen live.
Every time I hear âOne More Timeâ a smile comes to my face, specially when remembering my childhood memories with that song playing on the radio đ Iâm going to miss these guys so much...
Bought Homework back in 97. Still sounds fresh 24 years later.
I'm so glad you gave so much props to Something About Us. It's such a masterpiece
"My name is Giovanni Giorgio but everybody calls me Giorgio"

@@KevinJDildonik RAM is great but Discovery is really their best especially the movie that was made for it
The give life back to music reference at the end made me so happy
End of an era...
Discovery is probably my favourite album from them. 1993-2021.
"So to Daft Punk, thank you. For the Digital Love... And giving life back to music" â€ïž
Harder Better Faster will always be a classic!!
Something About Us is easily their best Track And most underrated!!
Touch is their best track and by far.
@@TokyoBalletReprise Touch is amazing!! But, I don't know, Something About Us is just heavenly to međđ

They heavily sampled Cola Bottle Baby by Edwin Birdsong. Not even an original song, they basically copied that song

polyphonic and middle 8 are gods on doing like this, its so pleasing.
Can we just appreciate how good the editing is đ
1000 likes and 0 dislikes? I think it proves how much people loved Daft Punk. And the quality of Middle 8's videos.
Weâll Always Cherish Your Songs Daft Punk!
One more time was the first dance track I ever heard that didnât annoy me like the other dancepop I heard on the radio before
Thank you daft punk for introducing me into a completely new genre
Just one more time id like to watch them live
I love the way the RAM helmet logos are done in their different era styles!
Daft Punk breaks up. Me: god, I cannot wait for the Middle8 video on daft punk. Me, four minutes ago: FINALLY
If you haven't listened to the discovery album along with the cartoon, I would highly recommend it. Especially with some smoke đđ
100%
No smoke.
The editing!!! Amazing stuff from you, again!
Always looking forward to your content every time!!! Clean edits, seamless transitions and don't get me started on the sampling breakdown
was waiting for this, class video
Amazing video, one of your best. The way you broke down the "One More Time" sample was great. RIP Romanthony
The visuals in your videos never fail to surprise me, well done.
This is an absolutely amazing video that shows a great level of dedication to researching the subject. Thank you soo much for making this! Discovery has always been my favorite album.
This is my absolute favorite band and I really waited for you to make a video about them!
While I'm really Spotify influenced and normally don't like to listen to full albums (I know this doesn't seem to be a great taste for music just consuming short tracks and such), I always liked their albums and most tracks are so well made.
Most of the time there is just one melody that repeats itself over and over and gets a little mixed up with other elements, but because every track has just this beautiful rythm and clean melody I really like a lot of their tracks and it doesn't get boring if you have a lot of them to hear!
**James Murphy wants to know your location before you know it yourself**
Great video! I remember a Q&A with the Duo on the Daft Club site back in 2008, thanks for the nostalgia.
The best video you made in a while. Discovery is one of those albums that shaped my taste in music and to hear you explain it so deeply was extremely touching and informative. Keep going man.
Discovery was the first album I bought at 12 yo. The disc is still in my car today.
Thank you so much for this! This video is so well-written and articulated, your introduction of Daft Punk is smooth and accurate, love it!
This was so informative. Never knew there were so many samples on this. So many memories with this album
GOODNESS GRACIOUS GOD ALMIGHT another master piece jeez i can not say how much i love the editing style the captivating script and visuals perfect story telling good god well done there isnt something youve made i didnt like well done ive never even explored daft punk and im definitly going to now
As soon as they announced the break up, I thought "wow, this middle 8 video is gonna be good"
Discovery is one of my favorite records. Gonna miss these legends
Please do a part 2 focusing on random access memories!!!! Love the videos by the way.
Always with those amazing videos. truly love your work
Listening to Daft Punk gives me so much nostalgia since my dad would always play their stuff when I was younger. Discovery is one of my favourite albums and it makes me happy to see it acknowledged by a channel as awesome as yours, so thank you đ
Awesome video!!! I'd love to see this type of breakdown for any of The Avalanches albums
Man you are incredibly underrated, your views should be on the millions!
Thanks for this nostalgic trip into Daft. Also, thank you for saving your promo for the end of the video. I stop watching other people's videos when it happens in the middle.
I like how you show the evolution of their helmet designs as the video progresses.
Your editing and design skills are really really good. What a great video.
Your âthank youâ at the end brought a tear to my eye because that says it all
Although RAM is still my favorite from them (the choice of live instrumentation makes the difference for me), there is no doubt that Discovery is still an incredible project and deserves the acclaim itâs gotten.
Damn.. the editing of this video is another level đđđđ
Looking forward to this
Love the vids man keep it up â€ïž
You're amazing at editing. It's amazing
thank you middle8 and thank you daft punk, i cant believe it has been almost 2 weeks, wow time flies in lockdown
my favorite album has to be RAM, i may have listen to it over 50 times over the years
Love it man. Awesome video!
I fricking love these videos , so much lovely informations and explanation to better understand and value beautiful pieces of music
Discovery is one of the best front to back albums of all time. And the animation took it to another level.
Man these video's are always so beautiful! Thank you
5:39 Nightvision is such a masterpiece!
Very nice video! Thank you for using the helmets from my fan art! (The Alive 2007 and Tron helmets) at 8:46 and 8:55
That was insanely good, loved the way you portrayed their helmets getting changed throughout each album, gotta say that old LED look is something else, and the new look is just classy looking. They really made the robots a part of the music in a way no other artist probably will.
I remember blasting Daft Punk during my robotics engineering course back in high-school. Working after school until the fading sunset for national and world tournaments, hearing all the other after school clubs and programs in the background as Veridis Quo and Touch play gave such a good vibe.
In those moments when I had yet to discover how big the world was, only Daft Punk and technology mattered to me in that small room.
I remember coming home from high school, 9th, grade and seeing the "One More Time" video on MTV. 14 year old me didn't know jack sh%* about the complexities and intricacies of Daft Punk but I knew it was cool. Even when you look behind the hype, the persona, the facade (which is all part of the band, all intentional) and look at just the music - it truly is transformative, combining computer sounds and editing with disco/post-disco/r&b/Funk, into something that is a work of art, all it's own.
In 2019, I saw this Daft Punk tribute band, called "Alive" and you would have been hard-pressed to think it wasn't actually them, except for the fact that it was a rave in Detroit. They were the right height and shape for each of the members of DP and they were actually doing live automation and sound manipulation etc. not just "push and play" and mess with some faders. It was a fantastic show and was not just a "cover band" experience. That's the closest I'll ever get to seeing Daft Punk perform.
Hell yah thanks bro
This album changed my life. Have always loved it from beginning to end. Thank u for the video.
While RAM was my first exposure to the band, Discovery was always my favorite album they put out. While I love Rocking with these Robots, their breakup shows us that they were Human After All. Thank you Daft Punk, and thank you Middle 8 for making this wonderful video highlighting their work.
10k views, 1.4k likes, literally 0 dislikes. Great quality, keep it up!
Was waiting for thisđ
The first five songs on Discovery have been on my running playlist for years. Nothing gets me more pumped when starting a run than aptly named One More Time. Now, if youâll excuse me, I suddenly gotta go out for a jog!
I'd love to see a video on Deadmau5. I was surprised to see a video this good come out about this group this soon after the news.
So much amazing information... Wow!
Great as always
3:11 that was dope as hell editing my guy
Amazing vid, as always Middle 8
I love the attention to Something About Us. It is indeed, a hugely underrated masterpiece. I'd argue its their best song of all time, but it's honestly hard to choose with how good all of their stuff is
I've already explained to my gf that our wedding dance song will be something about us and there is no room for argument lol
woah thats a lot of info i didnt know, thanks middle 8
I hate that I never got to see them live. They came to my city and I was just too broke to go. Iâm glad I can still listen to their songs all the time forever.
would be really cool if u did one of these on fleet foxes, their newest album is beautiful and i'd love to hear ur take on it
Hey man, thank you for this video.
I played One More Time for my infant daughter the other day and I swear she started grooving to it. It was awesome.
I've also been playing lots of Ween to her. You should do a video on them!
Great video.. great homage...
