    On the 22nd of June the joint reconnaissance programme ends and time is called on one of the most experimental America's Cup initiatives of recent times. So I ask those who really matter, the teams and the recon staff themselves: Was joint recon a success and should it return for the next Cup?

      I‘ve been following the AC since 1997 but I am not a real sailor and I can only dedicate so much time to it. My only regular activity is following Mozzy Sails!
      And, yes, some of it is over the top of my head. But what I am really struggling with is to keep an overview of where the "circus" as a whole is at, where the individual teams are at, and the different classes of boats. So, if you could take a minute in each video to convey the bigger picture, this would certainly help me to be "less lost" and get more from your great content!
      In this episode, an introductory comment about what recon is, how it came about and what is generally happening in this field would have helped to make sense from the start of the video. I didn’t have a clue how big a thing this was.

    The Recon was definitely a success. As a F1 fan as well, it was good to see AC’s version of pre-season testing. Love seeing the teams getting involved with the fun and games of the interviews. Super insightful looking into the teams’ test programs, I’m sure some kids out there would have been inspired to get involved in the technical/engineering side of sailing, and THAT I believe is the greatest success you could ask for!

    Hi Mozz, great job on the Americas Cup - I look forward to new episodes as they drop and appreciate the depth of analysis you and your crack team perform.
    Just wondering why you don’t cover the Sail GP? Indeed no-one provides expert coverage of the Sail GP series and there is always a lot to unpack.
    Soem questions that spring to mind include
    - are the foiling 50 ft Cats too fast and difficult to control to be fleet racing?
    - why do some teams appear to be plagued by technical failures - ie NZ lost a mast and the Australian team have had an ongoing issue with control over the mailsail inverter.
    - were the penalties applied to the Australian boat equitable given they were avoiding a life threatening collision?
    - what performance enhancing drug is Giles taking (I want some)
    - why has the British team performed so well without Sir Benny?
    - Given that Sail GP is not a development series, why are the boats so close to the edge in their design specs. (As evidences by the Kiwi Mainsail failure)
    I know this will take some time but you can build up the channel and bring some unbiased objective analysis that is completely missing at the moment.

    Nice summary of this new (for this cycle) AC development. I would make a couple of additions to the excellent comments made in the video. The use of the data that was collected is reflected in society - most companies do NOT analyse the vast amounts of data they collect, and would spend their money more wisely by not bothering for most data feeds. Secondly the quality of the recorded recon interviews varied a LOT - quality journalists really deliver quality reports - enough said. My thanks, insightful and informing as usual!

    I think the idea of the Recon has been very successful but is clearly a first attempt and there is lots of scope for improvement. The boats and cameras all need to be improved and standardized and maybe utilization of drones to get better angles. There is clearly a demand for interpretation of each days sailing and the interviews, despite the best efforts, were generally uninformative. As your channel shows there is a real desire to engage with this information and a weekly round up with analysis direct from an informed recon team with access and tools to present the data would be perfect. Throw in the 'guest' team visitor who may have been on the vessel and you have a nice product although it may steal some views from you. Great work Mozzy thanks

      Totally agree with everything you said but don't mention the boring part without foils outside this channel, you'll be excoriated by lurking traditionalists. On the official AC channel, I've had many a spat with die-hard traditionalists who despise foils. Despite disagreeing with them I understand their sentiment but such is the current state of the sport. Fighting progress is a futile endeavor. I'm dying for Australia to field a contender. It aggravates me every time they announce the teams who will participate in the AC and Australia isn't one of them. I fail to understand what the problem is. Can't be for lack of interest seeing how overrepresented the country is in the number of sailors who participate in the AC, and they practically own Sail GP. Do you know what the reasons are?

    • @Spartan902
      @Spartan902 Před 19 dny +1

      @@jamesaron1967 I grew up sailing dinghys in the 80,s so I get the traditionalists but the future is foils so they have to move forward with it. I have absolutely loved the new age of sailing. So exciting now which still requires all the old school skills plus the new skills needed to sail these beasts. I don't truly understand why we don't have an entry. All I can put it down to is none of our super wealthy businesses and the people who own them are interested in sailing and therefore funding an entry which is a shame. They have so much money it would only be a drop in the bucket. Maybe if we hadn't so much success in SailGP then there might be more interest but I am only guessing. I might have to do some investigating on the matter.

    Some of the daily recon videos were less than interesting (eg when the cyclors were being interviewed), though having a shared set of eyes on the participants was generally valuable in providing visibility of the engineering-race before the regatta. From time-to-time I felt that some of the participants were being evasive rather than honest, though that seemed to more be something arising with junior members of a syndicate, rather than those further up the hierarchy, who typically seemed a bit more assured about what they could say to the camera. That the likes of Justin & Roger would (seemingly independently) add longer sequences, was at time also a useful additional perspective. Making the teams have a requirement to have (perhaps several specified) cameras running at all times when sailing, or tow testing, might be useful...but should the absence of cameras prevent activity occurring on the water?

    What is recon? Is it filming the boats while sailing?

    • @AnttiBrax
      @AnttiBrax Před 18 dny

      Rules state that every team is followed by a single common recon boat that videos and photographs the boat and shares the data with everyone so that teams don't need to spend money sending motorboats around the world to compete for the best view (and cause dangerous situations while doing it).

      I don't know what you are implying here. Now that everyone has their boats in the same place and everyone can use their own recon resources, why should they still keep doing common recon?
      Besides that everyone has just about finished development so the nature of the recon has changed too.

    Failure. For the amount of access they had the content was ridiculously limited. no drones, no spy cameras, no nothing. you had the sense they were actually holding back for fear of losing access. This is is a sporting event were the spectator is still an afterthought. Also small production value across the board. not enough money/knowhow.

    Realizing that killing recon this far out is going to kill people's interest in the race who aren't totally following the cup's every move. So in terms of growth for the sport, it's a very bad move

    Recon is largely useless at the margin. Extremely easy to put countermeasures in place. It's as old as the Cup - it's called sandbagging. It does help to share some basic knowledge and to get those who are further behind a little bit closer but that's it.
    If anything today's evolved technologies make sandbagging that much more effective since modern tools allow for accurate quantification of the "sandbag's" effects.
    Someday we may even see "reverse sandbagging" where teams go beyond the rules in practice to exhibit outstanding performance in order to get their rivals to invest in high risk/low return development strategies in a desperate attempt to catch up (remember the NZ Hula debacle).
    It's a poker game.

      I got the impression from time-to-time that syndicate members being interviewed at the end of a day's activity were being evasive rather than honest about events. With 360-cam technology seemingly becoming more useful, it may be enough to specify some recon that provides a window into events on the water without adding undue amounts of friction/cost. Perhaps those that will most gain from any required footage are those within the individual syndicates because of their insight into the nuance of any particular moment on-the-water.

    Absolutely put team staff on the recon boats.
    Might require team staffers to declare any conflicts of interest 👀 There’s a transparency in just letting the recon teams go free range.
    But it’d be brilliant to mic them up and get their voices on audio while the pictures are being recorded. Plus you’d probably also need an on-board recon reporter, plus driver and camera op.
    One last thing: zero emission & zero waste AC please.
