- Fintan O’Toole is an Irish journalist who writes for The Irish Times and The New York Review of Books.
The following interview was conducted by the Kirk Documentary Group’s Mike Wiser for FRONTLINE on March 11, 2024, prior to Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race. It has been edited for clarity and length.

I am disturbed that as O'Toole enumerates the tragedies in Joseph Biden's life, he never mentions the loss of Biden's young daughter who also died in the car accident.
Me too. She might have been the best of them, even if never a priest!
As an Irish-American woman, I absolutely feel this about Biden. I wasn’t choosing him immediately in 2020 as my favorite candidate, but honestly, he showed up, showed his Irish fortitude… and I loved that.

Believe me, i am not this closed minded. But i find it humors that a guy from across the pond , telling us about American politics.
This is not being done in a pierce morgan offencive way. He is given his opinion of a historian that has done research. He is being informative not trying to be perswasive. It is very welcome and appreciated. Peirce morgan is an ass and not appreciated. Like Rupert Murdock
as an historical reference, read "The American DIlemma" by the Swedish Professor of Economics, Gunnar Myrdal, and the author of the study that the Carnegie Foundation commissioned in 1948 to study the issue of race in the U.S. that influenced the SCOTUS decision on Brown vs The Board of Education in 1954. Tocqueville's book on the U.S. is another interesting study of the U.S.
I have met so many from all over the world, that know much more about our politics, than most of our citizens. They know that what happens here will affect them, also!

The biggest gap that I see in this interview is a discussion of Biden's having to face his own mortality when he had an aneurysm that required emergency brain surgery. Along with his recovery & lingering physical impacts.
It is incredible that Fintan O'Toole seems to NOT realize that the 1972 auto accident took the lives of both his wife Neilia AND his year old daughter Naomi.... even more incredible that PBS factchecking did not stop the interview and set O"Toole back on path
I'd guess it was edited out for time.

They keep calling it Biden's decision, when it was anything but.
it was. every decision we make comes from outside happenings that lead us to two or more roads but in the end the one we choose is down to us. this is especially the case because biden also made sure that he'd be the one to choose his vp to be his successor by endorsing her and getting others to do the same. he'll also be campaigning for her.
