- It’s been remarkable watching the Democratic Party act like a political party this past month - a party that makes decisions collectively, that does hard things because it wants to win, that is more than the vehicle for a single person’s ambitions.
But parties are made of people. And in the weeks leading up to President Biden’s decision to drop out of the race, it felt like the Democratic Party was made of one particular person: Nancy Pelosi. Two days after Biden released a forceful letter to congressional Democrats insisting he was staying in the race, the former speaker went on “Morning Joe” and cracked that door back open. And Pelosi has pulled maneuvers like this over and over again in her political career. When an opportunity seems almost lost, she simply asserts that it isn’t and then somehow makes that true. Sometimes it seems like Pelosi is one of the last people left in American politics who knows how to wield power.
Pelosi has a new book, “The Art of Power: My Story as America’s First Woman Speaker of the House,” and I wanted to talk to her about her role in Biden’s decision to drop out and what she’s learned about power in her decades in Congress.

Same! I've been ferociously listening to her interviews about her new book because inevitably the interviewer always asks her how she gets things passed, and I just find it all so fascinating. She's a pretty incredible woman and politician.

As a lifelong progressive, I've hod TONS of issues with Nancy Pelosi. However, I must admit the past year or so, she's been crushing it. Stepping down as speaker of the house, got Biden to withdraw from the race & backed Walz as the VP pick. Thank u Nancy!
Nancy has always been crushing it…I think we just haven’t always seen it. We wouldn’t have gotten rid of don’ ask don’ tell, or gotten the ACA without her. There’s probably dozens of bills that we’ve enjoyed, even just keeping the government open that was from her efforts.
It seems like she’s the only old person in the political class who realizes it’s time for her generation to pass the torch. And pushing Biden to do the same.
Pelosi has been crushing it since she took office. Her experience, ability to count votes and get things done is literally unparalleled.

I’m gonna admit that I used to not like Nancy Pelosi, I thought she was too comfortable in her position and not willing to fight for real changes. I also thought some of the insider trading critics were a problem. But this year Nancy Pelosi completely changed my mind and I actually have so much respect for her (not that she needs my respect I’m nobody). Pelosi saw the polling and saw a huge loss coming for the Dems, the people spoke and said they weren’t excited about Joe. Whether she acted to back up our voices or acted for personal reasons at the end of the day she took action and pressured him to drop out and we got what we wanted. She also told Kamala to pick Walz instead of Shapiro, which was shocking because Shapiro is very corporate and center dem and Walz is more progressive. This year will go down in the history books as the year Nancy Pelosi saved America 🇺🇸

Nancy reveals her tactics and herself in this interview. I find her sense of humor adorable as well. What a gift for our country.
Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi gave us a huge shot at redemption. I still don’t understand the mechanics behind how she does it even with her explaining it. There’s something about her ability to talk to people, one on one, that is beyond normal. A real treat to experience in real time. She may have single handedly save the republic… we shall see in November.

I'm very proud to say I was born in San Francisco. Living in Oakland, Berkeley. The consciousness and awareness of the bay area are so outstanding. I have grown up in this wonderful atmosphere being affected by so many positive influences. It's great to hear Nancy speak about all of this.

Nancy is one of the rare ones that we will always want to keep relevant. She is someone to admire and aspire to be.
A lot of historical praise for her will include the word female or woman and it will miss the mark on the scope of her achievements.
I hope we can learn to be additive about it. She did amazing, consequential, groundbreaking things. (And in a country where 100 years after women's suffrage we are only finally taking women seriously in politics).

You could like her or not, but that's a very sharp, resourceful politician
Nancy sees herself as a weaver, looking at all of the diversity in the democrat party with many differences, but all knowing why they are democrats. She looks at all of them with respect and let's them know she needs all of them to weave this tapestry and make something beautiful.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Pramila Jayapal and other women of color would like to have a word on that. It’s been widely reported that the former speaker hasn’t been great, fair, let alone respectful to a lot of the younger legislators like AOC.
I think it took her a while to get there. I think she underrated progressives for 6 to 10 years too long and saw them as a "fringe" group long past the point when they were a small but non-fringe group of voters.
Learning more about Pelosi has given me a greater appreciation for the organizational purpose of leading a party, because at the end of the day someone still needs to have the skill to gather a coalition to actually pass stuff. I think there are a lot of overly-online people who are dismissive of anyone who isn't progressive enough, without following how government actually works.

I may disagree with quite a lot of Pelosi's stances, but you cannot deny she is good at her job. That's part of why Republicans hate her, is she is a strong whip for her party. Which can be upsetting when she is at odds with what I want the Democratic Party to do but I can see now why she kept getting re-elected to Congress as much as she did.
Who is the next Pelosi? She’s one of the women I respect the most and will miss terribly when she retires.

Thank you for allowing me to better understand Nancy Pelosi. I have both adored and disliked her in my years as a voter. The dislike has nearly dissipated with this interview. What I had considered arrogance has changed to respect for purpose that she now, in my mind , has been exhibiting.

Oh , Nancy Pelosi, I admire you so much. You speak so well! You are so thoughtful and you make your education continue by reading such a wide variety of genres of literature. Have you seen the videos that speak about what was happening to the composer of the national anthem before he wrote it? He was on a British. Vessel in the harbor trying to arrange a swap of prisoners when the British started bombarding the fort there and they kept bombarding it for three hours to force those on shore to remove the flag. The story is that the flag was hit repeatedly, but patriots kept putting it back up even though it meant their deaths. I will never forget that, and that remains my most powerful reason to keep believing that citizens will not accept the “termination” of our constitution.

The question about Vance's claims that Tim Walz is a "San Francisco liberal" missed a key, key point. Vance was taken under the wing of a wealthy San Francisco mogul, Peter Thiel. After practicing law for just two years, he moved to that city to become a venture capitalist under the tutelage of Peter Thiel. It is he who is tied to San Francisco. I think Vance is defensive about his ties there while trying to be a person who can relate to rural people and failing at it. So, he's trying to connect Tim Walz to San Francisco in some negative way. It's desperate and so transparent.

i remember at president biden's inaugural ceremony when lady gaga performed the national anthem and how it really got me when at the phrase, "...that our flag was still there," she gestured toward the flag. it's that kind of moment that has kept me going knowing that everything is going to be okay from now on. and madam speaker emerita pelosi has been instrumental in seeing us through it all.
