  • Slaughterhouse 5, released in 1972 and adapted by George Roy Hill from the novel by Kurt Vonnegut, is a fantastic movie that I highly recommend. It's an engrossing, clever and very entertaining dark comedy that addresses both fate and the nature of war.

I love the story telling of both the book and the movie. But esp. the congruity of the book and the movie. I know of no movie that is a more faithful re-telling of a novel. And the sound track is superb, although my favorite part is the 3rd movement of the 4th Brandenburg concerto.

When SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE focuses on Dresden, the film is wrenching and frequently brilliant. Much of the rest of the film, however, is a trifle silly.

The acting by Michael Sacks was the big weakness of
this film. Billy Pilgrim in this was passive, disconnected, and without any personality. He never went on to be more than a character actor in a movie here and there for the next 10 years, then quit acting and been in the financial industry since. Ron Leibman and Eugene Roche gave the best performances by far.
