I’m a 45 year old, lifelong Lakers fan, born & raised to hate Larry Bird, Bird was THE truth. One of the baddest & most feared players I’ve ever witnessed. Shooting & passing he’d kill you.
Bird was one of the smartest and most monstrous players who won 3 MVPs in a row and 3 rings in one of the most talent-rich eras in NBA history. The fact he was slow and not terribly athletic gives him way more credibility alongside the fact his statistics were still crazy even after his back became debilitated. Aries Spears is speaking all facts in this one.

Larry Bird as a SF won 3 straight MVPs, had the first 50 40 90 season, and shined in an era rich with SFs. We're talking about Gervin, Moncrief, English, King, Worthy, Dantley, Aguirre, Dr. J, Nique, Vandeweghe, Johnson. This is literally a list of 90% HOFers, MVPs, Scoring gods, and multiple All Star/All NBA players and Larry distinguished himself from all of them.
Bird had that HUSTLE! In fighting and basketball its the hustle the tenacity and not getting tired
Thing thats most underrated about bird is he made 3 all defense teams
I saw Bird block Jordan's AND Scottie's shot in the SAME transition
When players were playing with they back to basket and HAND checking.
Every player says hand checking was a total game changer.
Without that he getting cooked like LUKA or Hardem.
Bird was not athletic
He was a beast and a rival of Rodman.
Which is why I don’t give Luka a pass. His fan boys talk about he’s not that athletic. CP3 wasn’t all that athletic, nor is Draymond. Jokic had improved but is still suspect on D and the centers of this generation are degraded. Embiid is really the only true dominant center. AD is a really a 6’10 PF, but in the bubble he gave Joker the work. This year he’s a shadow of himself due to injuries, didnt play bad, but Jokic clearly outplayed him offensively. 😢

There’s more to being a great player than just stats. Anyone can pad their stats doesn’t make you a great player. Bird effected the game in other ways. Shooting was just one of those ways.

That's 50% from the field, 40% + from the 3 and 90% from the free throw line.
Also he never practiced the 3 point shot or made it a part of his game where he would take it more than once a game until the 1985 season. After that he shot over 40% from 3 nearly every year. And nobody had as smooth a jumpshot as bird from any part of the court shooting on the run or falling backwards, not even steph curry could shoot those shots and he's considered the best shooter ever.
Larry Bird, was a big time legend for a reason. He was a god of basketball for people who witnessed him.
