  • Dnieper Campaign. Ukraine is carrying dozens of amphibious landings across the Dnieper in Kherson Oblast. The focal point of this battle is now taking place at Krynky, where Ukrainian Marines hold a small bridgehead. Despite the enemy's firepower superiority, Ukraine sends more and more reinforcements into that sector.

if Russia plans to end the war at the Dneiper from Crimea to Kiev (cos rivers are more defensible), they should probably build a long line of pill boxes along the entire river... i dunno if this exists but i'd set up movement or heat detecting machine guns that auto fire on anything that moves long the river and auto sends warnings to the army... id make the entire side of the east of the river full of artillery, anti aircraft and machine gun nexts.. anti tank guns etc.. and then ukraine can get peace.. or keep fighting and keep going into the meat grinder

From Ukrainian insider: While people crippled by the war are knocking on the thresholds of the MSEC, Bezuglaya gives insight about the opportunities for people with disabilities in the mobilization and recruitment project:
“Concerning persons with a third disability group: we are adding a deferment and the right to dismissal for them to the bill on recruiting, mobilization and service. That is, such a person will be able to be called up only voluntarily and will be able to resign at will.”
It didn’t work out with an army of drones, let’s create an army of disabled people. With voluntary service in the current conditions, everything will be very simple, as at the beginning of the war - a couple of days of beatings, or even torture, and you have already voluntarily donated your car to the needs of the ZSU, a couple of days of beatings and torture and you are already a volunteer stormtrooper. Well, if the disease progresses, you can quit if you survive.
And if you get a serious degree of disability during the war, they won’t even assign it to you.
Relieving the country's economy of the burden of maintaining disabled people is in full swing.
Our authorities do not want to lag behind the already unhappy people and stop this war.

Cherson was bad for Russia. After Kharkov defeat Ru command realized that the deniper grouping would be unable to advance any further toward Mykolaiv or even Edessa, because the Ukr combat capability was not fully broken.
So, Ru command came up with a plan to reduce unnecessary fronts from four, Cherson, Zaparozhie, Donetsk and Lugansk, to only two, Lugansk and Donetsk. And this fronts reductions were mainly because of manpower shortages and drawing all the fighting in one place (Bakhmut). While Ru was actively assaulted in Donetsk to keep Ukr busy, they also built Zaparozhie defences (Sarouvikin lines) and reinforced Lugansk at the meantime with partial mobilization. Russia with reduced fronts focused its war in Donetsk to defeat and destroy Ukr combat capability in Bakhmut but as it turns out Bakhmut was not enough to destroy Ukraine combat capability but only reduce it. The real reason Ukraine now is performing poorly and retreating on all fronts is because of their own Summer offensive. Yes their own Offensive was the nail in coffin of their own.
So yea Ru withdrawal from right side of deniper was part of a large plan to deactivate the front to focus on the other fronts. But the Ukrainian assault on left side of deniper is strategic PR propaganda and an attempt to draw Ru reserves that can be used in retaking Robotyne and other villages.

As a soldier I know that crossing the river means I am probably going to die there, 99% certain. If Ukraine had good Battlefield Commanders they would not send their men to certain death.
The other side of the river is now Russian territory, Ukraine can only be pests for the Russians on the other side of the river. Accept the loss of territory, not the loss of hundreds of lives.
Intead fortify your lines, set up new lines, and give your exhausted soldiers a break, allow them to train the green soldiers, allow food and supplies to arrive.

@mosesgoldbergshekelstien1520 Yes the USMC is a fantastic force, but it isn't at the individual level of an RMC. The RMC course and subsequent specialisation training is more akin to US special forces training. RMC along with Parachute regiment frequently are selected for Pathfinders/Rangers and SAS/SBS.
Royal Marines achieved their objectives at Galipoli and that was clearing the area for the landings after that they re-embarked onto the battleships. The RMC was formed after WW1
RMC is better equipped in the small unit infiltration style tactics that Ukraines marines are executing.

Yes. They're more of a "last ditch" effort. They're low quality, often last to ever receive upgrades or reinforcement. Usually, you know your army is in disarray, and things are cracking when your territorial units are being defeated in a defensive posture, so what does that exactly mean when they're being used as an offensive unit? To me, it seems that most of Ukraine's regular and elite units were deployed for their offensive, which didn't turn out too well either. Most of Ukraine's "regular" forces are deployed across the front line, leaving these territorial units to more or less fight for themselves, literally.

We can see that to be effective, the Ukrainians cannot depend on any but the elite units can be depended on when things get at all tough. The Marine brigades are the ones that have been depended on to hold critical positions, and for successful offences, given that most of the other brigades have no staying power--they are brittle. Now those fools in Ukraine have taken these few effective brigades and concentrated them in an area that was a massive one sided gamble in the first place given that the Dnieper will always be a bottleneck for supplies--the reason that the Russians abandoned the west side of the Dnieper. And to make it even worse, the idiot Ukrainian leadership keeps sending the best troops into a few blocks of that city, concentrating them where they can be effectively decimated by Russian artillery. And if those Marines had not been wasted here, they would probably be a lot more effective in stiffening defences where Ukraine is losing territory---which is effectively the rest of the front. So Ukraine is able to hold those few blocks that really are more worthless than any other position the Ukrainians hold. Russia seems to be mostly using low end units to hold back the Marines. So amazingly stupid.

The only reason I can think of why Ukraine keeps doing this, is so's they can point to a map and tell their NATO masters that they have gained a foothold on the east bank of the river. They know full well it's not going to lead to anything, but it looks like progress if they spin it enough. For a significant crossing it'll have to be something like 10,000 troops minimum, 100 tanks, 150 artillery pieces and 200 other armoured vehicles. And there is no way Ukraine is getting that much across. So it really is just to impress their masters.

This is my favorite quote from that BBC propaganda article: "No-one knows the [Kiev] goals. Many believe that the command simply abandoned us. The guys believe that our presence had more political than military significance. But we just did our job and didn't get into strategy." A hell of a thing to realize when you're wading in a frozen swamp under fire!

Russia : "we have several bridges and 60.000 men across the river, we're holding on fine. There's only a slight risk of logistics issue when all bridges will be destroyed. What do we do ? We retreat ? Ok."
Ukronazis : "we have zero bridges, zero possibility for logistics support, and we will be annihilated by artillery when we land. What do we do ? Keep sending conscripts with 3 weeks of training to die ? Best strategy ever !"
