I know it’s been done many times but would love to see “A day in the life of a pro runner”.
We have plans to potentially do a spin on this! Honestly, a “normal day” would be terrible, samey content… but perhaps a more detailed training day or day on training camp would be cool!
@@the.distanceprojectSounds cool
This the sort of content that makes you a cut above the rest. So insightful, great stuff x
Thanks mate! Gets no views but think it’s invaluable for building good connection with our audience. Glad you enjoyed 🫡🫡
(1) I'm going to second what the people below said: I'm definitely interested in the niche content you guys are planning on creating! I know this is still quite vague, but specifically I think a lot of sub-elite runners would be interested in hearing about the nitty-gritty, non-sexy details of the professional world -- how much of a say do pros have in their race calendar, how do brands value social-media presence vs. performance, what's the discussion like pre-race as to pacing (is is the fastest, most influential runners who dictate?), and that kind of thing. Basically the stuff that a lot of other channels gloss over. (2) 100% agree that creating a narrative around races (i.e. making clear what's on the line, why this race matters for Callum and others, the history of the race) will help elevate the content!
Thanks Conor - will look to include more details like this during our videos! Some of it is sensitive & needs to be fully explained or people will clip out bits out of content & I’ll be hung out to dry!! Appreciate your feedback 🙏🏼
I am definitely interested in how the journey into pro running looks like. Looking forward to following this journey!
Thanks for following along!
Loving the regular content! Keep it coming lads!!
Thanks mate! Next upload is this time next week 🤞🏼🤞🏼
Great stuff as always. The part about what CZcams content gets views and whys was fascinating. FWIW I love the focus on your journey to becoming a pro and would love to learn more about the business of pro running.
Thanks mate - appreciate the feedback!
The videos you guys are making are definitely the kind of running videos my wife and I enjoy. They are fresh and offer a different take on running rather than just watching sub-elite marathon running content as you touched on.
The France video was also great as it was relatable in the sense that running isn't always perfect, and even runners of your level don't always feel 100% all of the time.
Keep it up and it's encouraging me to want to try more track events this year with our club.
Thanks Mark, great to hear! Thank you for tuning in :) Let us know if you get to do some track races!
Great video guys! You have have captured an area and style within the market to make own. Just keep doing what you are doing and good luck for Boston
Thanks Chris! Appreciate it
Love your channel and stuff guys, 100% authentic.
Thanks mate! 👍🏼
Fantastic insite into the life of an athlete and content creator. Keep it up lads 👌
Thanks mate!
Really enjoyed this. Your content is excellent. It's refreshing and stands out among so many other channels just looking for hits and churning out pap / nonsense. Stick with it. Great to be on the journey with you. Congrats on your Boston run - well deserved!!!
Thanks for the feedback! Pleased that people are enjoying the content… we could really do with one of them popping off & building some juicy subs so we can keep spending the $$$ to make them happen!! 💪🏼💪🏼
Love the direction of the channel, think putting the art over cookie cutter content is a relief for all of us to hear. Cant wait to see the content you and charlie put out over this year. Great content for the sport and safe to say I'm proud to be a diehard TDP fan!
Thanks for the kind words & support! Hopefully momentum keeps building enough that we can finance bigger and better videos!
Class video once again lads! I completely get the dilemma between the content and the performance element, but the fact you’re prioritising value creation and building a connection with the audience through these types of videos is what’s gonna make people stick around for the journey. Only suggestion I have as a fellow runner is more training videos but keep smashing it lad and all the best for Boston 🇺🇸
Thanks mate! We have 1x dedicated 'training video' every month for now -- always potential to do more, but we're keen to ensure it remains high quality and isn't just 30 mins of me running around with little added value!
Inspired. Great to see the journey. Love what you’re doing! Time To Focus 🧘
Thanks for watching!
The content you continue to create is absolutely class. You see the graft in the running and the edits. The audience will come, if you stick to your guns and continue to keep that best in class approach. A 'value add' to the channel, might be creating more 'chunkable, or snackable' pieces of content (from the longer hero content epidsodes you make) using CZcams Shorts. By engaging with potentially a wider audience with a short 20 second snip, hopefully more people will then come over to the channel and watch the whole piece. I make content for various clients (as my job) and the conversation around engagement is massive all the time. I know you might not want to, but if you then create those youtube shorts, they translate really well on TikTok. All the best with the season, and the channel. It's a brilliant watch.
Thanks mate. 100% shorts are a great way to pull people in, more of a marketing tool than anything. We may create a few, but equally think the real value lies in the longer form stuff and “out of context” clips aren’t always good for showing the quality of the content
Im definitely one of those who have no clue about anything track! Love all your content so far, I do love the race videos the most of course 😬 But it’s been really interesting watching the content. And congrats on the pro contract as well!
Thanks mate!
you guys make some of the best content for those interested in pro running. also, the more basic type content like how to run a faster mile is entertaining too despite being more cookie cutter
Thanks mate!
Best CZcams channel out there!!
Appreciate it 👍🏼👍🏼
Congrats Callum on the pro contract, well deserved from all the work you’ve put in. Are Hoka now helping you get into better races or are you still having to email organisers yourself to get into these bigger meets? Interested to know how your race calendar is now put together.
Thanks mate - I have an agent that supports me with race entries 👍🏼
Yes! The Liverpool cross video was amazing, just rewatched it :)
Many athletes have a ritual before the start line, like tying their shoes a certain way, breathing a certain pattern, ect... now being a super professional, do you have a ritual or a calming technique you do before facing off against the best?
I always try and look around the track or venue and smile, makes me remember that this is a fun job/hobby & also keeps me relaxed 👍🏼
@the.distanceproject we know is chewing a Honey and Lemon Fisherman Friend mint 🤌🏼 😂
Hey, love the channel! Did your position from France get upgraded based on the Mo Katir news today?
If it ever does it will be way in the future… loads of appeals / things happen before anything in the past changes 👍🏼
Greta vid lads. Would be interesting to see content on a real intro into indoor szn and how it works/the differences to outdoor and why people do it (shorter sprints, how it feels doing 1500 over more laps, the banking, closer racing etc) also any insight into testing and appeals process especially with Mo K in the news recently
Can’t really speak on testing/doping much as I’m not on the whereabouts system, so can’t speak from experience / keep it real.
Can definitely incorporate some more detail about indoors!
I really enjoy these videos and find it so interesting, even though I'm just an amateur park runner running 24 mins 5ks!
I'd be interested in knowing more about your story history, how did you get to this point. I know you used to play football, but I don't understand in any great detail how you transitioned and what the motive was.
I'd be interested in knowing more about your coach relationship, given it's long distance. How did you get introduced? Do you pay him? How does it work? Do you train alone mostly and what's your experience and the pros /cons. Does he help you with nutrition or is that self managed. What does your diet /nutrition look like? How did you work on running form? Do you actively work on it or did you have a naturally good posture? Do you understand the physiology behind training and the sessions that you do? Do you read / study it or leave it to coach?
I'd be interested in knowing how you balance running to your max and keeping injuries at bay. Is it a tight line to walk? Also how running at an elite level affects your relationship and personal life. What are the sacrifices you have to make etc.
I appreciate you cant / won't want to cover all these topics.
The videos already give an amazing insight to your life and what a pro running lifestyle looks like so thank you!
Best of luck with the journey and congratulations on the hoka deal.
Thanks for the detail! A LOT of this is covered in our “Closing The Gap” series - which is 12 videos we filmed following my summer series. The production quality is not as good, but a lot of the information you requested is included - so maybe worth giving some of those a watch!
Love the video, reminds me of the podcast, when’s that coming back? Or is it 😢
Some point in the future.
Another great video! Definitely relating to what you’re saying with the content and niche stuff with my own CZcams, my most popular video is a reaction video with a clickbait title and thumbnail 😂
Haha not surprised!
More prefer your style of content to the regular stuff we see! Keep it up
Thanks mate!
Loved this! I would be interested in a cost breakdown per week/month as a professional runner. I’m always interested to see how budgeting works regarding general costs (food, rent, entertainment etc) and running specific things (massage, sports nutrition, travel, gear)? However I understand if this is too personal!
In all honesty, you get paid a salary in the same way every ‘normal’ job does - so budgeting and spend is just the same as every other person! Differences come of course with spend for race travel, appearance fees etc - but I’m not sure this is something I can give detail on without upsetting race organisers!
Maybe a series focusing on different “individuals” within a pro athlete’s life (coach, agent, dietitian, physio, video maker, teammates etc) - seeing how they support the athlete, their role, and the benefits they can bring?
We can try to feature some of this!
Good job!
Thanks for watching 👍🏼👍🏼
You'd mentioned previously you wanted to do 3 gym sessions a week, heavy, lighter & 'extras' over winter. Was this something you were able to stick to and do you log your gym sessions somewhere other than Strava?
Cheers and best of luck for the race! 🎽
I did 3x gym for a few weeks but found it was unsustainable and was reducing the quality of my running, so I dropped back to 2x gym sessions per week.
If things go as well as you hope this year… what are you hopeful / think you can achieve this season realistically
Thanks mate!
One idea would be going to the nationals or English schools cross country and providing some behind the scenes sort of thing. Also maybe some BMC races would be great to see at some point. Keep up the good work 💪🫡
Yep definitely - it’s a little harder when it comes to working with kids / filming a younger audience. But we are super interested!
@@the.distanceproject oh yeah that's true 😅
Time for "Run to Survive"
Yes sir
@@the.distanceproject but seriously doing something like drive to survive and a build up to British outdoor champs. Interviewing all the big contenders for the Olympics and creating a bit of banter/rivalry would be really cool!
Agreed. It’s hard for us to do that because I’m somewhat of a contender (hopefully) so people are unlikely to want to deep dive in to how things are going, knowing that footage is with me haha. And 2) it’s costly!
But hopefully someone can jump on the idea :)
Great work as always. I think it would be great to focus in on some of the marginal gains available from your diet. Your experience with PureSport products, whether you think Cordyceps makes a difference? Beetroot, turmeric etc.
We’ll have a think about this 👍🏼 I worked with Puresport for 6 months - what I can say is that their products definitely promote healthy habits & behaviours: it places an emphasis on recovery/health so you’re more likely to incorporate it in to your routine. But… since I stopped using the products I have noticed literally 0 differences in how I was before, so perhaps the efficacy of them can be questioned. Not sure!
**Note: I was paid by them during the 6 months and chose to leave of my own accord 👍🏼
Can you explain how you actually get a sponsorship, do you reach out or do the brand reach out, what are the requirements, how much do you get and what are the benefits etc?
Cheers
Rueben
Hi Rueben, I won’t be sharing any specific financial details of my contract - this is for both my own benefit/privacy and my employer. Just like any ‘normal’ job, I won’t be putting my salary out on the internet!
I was approached by HOKA, then myself, agent and coach discussed if we thought it would be a good fit & negotiated the specifics of the deal. I’ll be with the brand for at least the next few years :)
Is the Run It Three Ways podcast coming back?
No idea mate, all 3 of us are so busy with careers / families / other projects at the moment!
All for watching your pro journey but would also be cool to see you smash a parkrun or local 10k every so often lol
If it ever fits in the plan!
Great video! I'm interested in your relationship with your physio/therapist and how often you go. May be boring for others but I'm interested and if your at a race in a different country do you just see a random guy.
Great point - I’ll think about how we can integrate some of this content. Short version for you: I see my physio every 2 weeks + more times if something is going wrong / it’s needed. When I go to meets there is physio/medical provided if you need to see someone.
Athletes that struggle with injury or have more £££ will sometimes travel with their own physio.
Let's assume you train 4 hours a day (and that's a lot of miles!), sleep for 10-12 hours. That still leaves 8-10 hours. You have to do something to fill the time or your mind will turn to mush. In his autobiography Dave Moorcroft wrote that being a full time runner and nothing else didn't work for him and he ran a lot better with a part time job - not too demanding but something he found enjoyable and rewarding (not necessarily in a financial sense but morally). Think you are right not to ditch completely outside interests.
Love your channel (and Adam Fogg's) because they are focused on elite middle distance running. Too many CZcamsrs out there bragging about breaking four hours in a marathon - which doesn't interest me in the slightest. And there must be lots of potential eyeballs like mine!
Thanks Mark! Other passions are important, 100% 👍🏼 appreciate the kind words
Very interesting, thank you!. I have a question. I heard the new about Mo Katir today. Can you explain for us how the "whereabouts" works from an athlete point of view? What do you have to do to be always available for controls?
I can try and provide some context in the next episode... although I am not on whereabouts protocol myself, so it's hard to truly speak on what it's like / if it's easy / if it's difficult etc.
Understand the reasons you gave for these chats not being longer than 25 mins but think a lot of people (myself included) would want to hear a lot more from you on these sort of subjects. I personally will listen to far longer chats than this when it's a podcast (trackstaa, sunday plodcast etc.) but I can understand your point that people won't watch long videos of you chatting, there is something about seeing that a youtube video is over 40 mins which makes you not want to watch it that is somehow different to seeing a podcast that gets up to 1 hour. Maybe could consider making this series a pod as I think the demand would be there to listen to what you guys have to say.
It’s a logistical thing also to deal with videos that are much longer in duration - makes editing, file sharing etc. more difficult. Certainly hear what you’re saying though! For now, it won’t become a podcast 👍🏼
Speaking to other athletes doing the same thing or are just above you would be interesting to see how the journeys differ.
👍🏼👍🏼definitely trying to incorporate other stories
I would be interested to know how it compares to the ncaa?
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Don’t dumb it down - there is already too much ‘how to’ and ‘tips & tricks’ stuff out there. I also love the France indoor video
100% 🙏🏼 thank you
Not sure how much youve had to do it and how much youre actually allowed to show but would be interested in the drug protocol and similar content thats very different between sub pro and pro athlete protections
Can’t speak on this too much as I’m not on the whereabouts system, so don’t have the same experience as those more seasoned pros 👍🏼
@@the.distanceproject if/when you get added would be cool to see the process
Maybe a “day in the life”… bit of a clique style vid I know
There’s a million of the same out there! Run, work, eat, run, work, sleep!
ultimately, we are invested in your journey. so the more personal you are able to make it the better. And you did run a PB so downplaying it by not highliting the PB probably did you a disservice in the algorithm.
We’re not really in the business of clickbait or nurturing the algorithm, just focusing on quality content that we think brings value 👍🏼 Over time that should generate sustainable traction not one hit wonder videos
@@the.distanceproject I don’t disagree and respect the integrity. I guess I define clickbait as a misleading statement that gets you to click on a video when normally you wouldn’t. Either way keep up the good work.
Here for this content! Every time you guys have a new video up I have it watched the same day, which I can't say is the case for any other channels. More of the same 🫡 and good luck in Boston
Thanks Mark! Appreciate the support 🙏🏼
