I played men's league baseball in the 1970s. I had an 84 mph fastball and got a lot of Ks against most players in my league. Then we played a team with a few minor pros in the lineup. I loaded the bases with two outs. Up came their thin shortstop, a guy wearing thick glasses and not much visible muscle. Thinking I could strike him out, I sent my best fastball to the outside corner, low. He slammed my pitch 400 feet. I later found out he was a seasoned minor pro who had lots of experience playing in the Mexican league. This video reminds me of how much fun I

The normal person has no real concept of what sports are like when played at the highest levels. Baseball, football, basketball, hockey, tennis, boxing, track and field -- athletes at that level are almost superhuman compared to the rest of us.
I was talking to my son about this. You can be damn good at something (Div I/Div II/ Div III sport, Golden Gloves, All City HS) and that is honorable. (You're likely in the 1% of players.) However, there's a Grand Canyon's difference between being damn good and being ELITE. (Elite -as Olympic Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas puts it -is the 1% of the 1% OF THE 1%)

Most don't have a concept of college level either. I remember one of my buddies in highschool had a cousin that played some semi pro hockey and he came to our lacrosse box game. He made my buddies who played ice hockey look like absolute novices.

Nice. I got to 86 in HS, never could get past that, and hung in the low 80's, usually 82-84. People think it's not hard, IT IS. Your technique has to be on point, your command has to be on point, your release needs to be on point. Anything off a little, you see it. Pitching at 60' 6 inches (front of rubber to back of home plate point distance) is hard as hell, so mad respect to anyone who goes out and does it! You off by 1/4" it translates to feet down the plate. Most difficult thing I ever did in my life.

I faced a guy who threw 95 mph in high school, and he pitched a perfect game at three Rivers Stadium in the championship game of the playoffs. His first pitch was at my head and knocked me to the ground, the next two pitches were right down the middle and I swung right through them and the fourth pitch I hit and would’ve been a home run until one of my friends jumped up and robbed me of a home run over the fence

Hardest thing in the world to do, hit a ball hurling towards u at 90+ mph with a 2and a half inch rounded stick. Have to give all ball players a gigantic amount of credit for being superhuman athletes who can throw the ball that fast and the guys in the box who can turn on it and drive it 400+ feet. No matter what baseball is the hardest game to play but if u can do it it’s a ton of fun.

@@DSARM Good your baseball career makes me keep playing because even if I don’t make it to the big leagues I know something else good will come out of all the work I put into it. Right now my velo is dropping but I have been doing everything to get it up so baseball frustrating right now

Fastest way to an operating table. Knowing your elbow hurts you should had stopped but you continued. You had a lot of adrenaline due to players that were there and you wanted to look good. I love baseball and I continued to play when I was over 30 and I pitched in adult baseball leagues. In one game I had 10 strike outs up to the 5th inning. My shoulder started hurting and I went out and pitched the 6th inning. I took myself out due to the pain. This was in the 1990’s I went to see Doctor Jobe in Los Angeles where I live because after a week my shoulder was still hurting and after an MRI and an Arthrogram were done my shoulder did not look good. I had to have surgery where he took a tendon and tied it to a bone in my shoulder. Same operation Oral Hershiser had when his shoulder went out. It took 2 years before I could throw a ball again. The physical therapy took many months and was not fun due to the stretching of the shoulder on a flat wall. I gave up pitching and I played the outfield but at least I was able to throw a baseball again. I retired 6 years ago after playing 30 years in my league. Baseball has changed so much, the younger kids have better coaching, training and exercising which creates better mechanics and higher velocity. Same goes for hitting. I believe that is why we see more home runs.
Great story. Dr. Jobe was a legend for his innovation and back in the day he was the one I always read about major leaguers seeking out when they needed surgery. Curious if you visited with him and if he had any insights on why some can throw so hard and never have problems? Born with stronger tendons and ligaments?

He's earned 2.8 million throughout his entire career in the MLB. Finally made 1 million last season. Take into account taxes in Cali (total robbery) so he probably cleared 550k-600k.
Smart kid getting a modest(ish) house. Hopefully, he's saving as injury could occur at any time. But remember a nice sized house that would cost 400k in a normal place costs 800k in CA.

It's weird that I haven't played an organized game since high school and I'm 33 now. I went to a local baseball academy to take my son. And I threw some pitches there just to see what I could throw. And I was throwing 87 88 mph which I dont really understand. I dont really have the control I used to have but I throw much harder than I did in high school when I used to pitch. Too bad I dont play anymore
