  • In this video, Kirby Allison tells you the top 3 ways to know if you need to resole your dress shoes.
    Knowing when its time to resole your dress shoes can be a challenge. Taking them in too soon would waste money on a perfectly good outsole, but wait too long and you can cause serious damage that cannot always be repaired. We go over 3 tips that will help you decide if it is time to take your shoes into a cobbler to get fixed.
    If you need your shoes resoled check out our Kirby Allison Certified Shoe Restoration Program: www.kirbyallison.com/shoe-car...
    Ways To Know If Your Shoes Need To Be Resoled:
    #1 Run your fingers over the center of the outsole to check for wrinkles or softness
    #2 Any holes means you've reached the lifetime of the outsole
    #3 Inspect the perimeter of the outsole to look for stitches exposed

    Very informative video! As a shoe cobbler, I can’t recommend enough that folks bring in their shoes to be re-soled or for new heel pads BEFORE they get too bad. Often times, if the damage is too bad, it can’t be fixed. Keep your uppers in good shape with routine conditioning, as Kirby has so often stated, and periodically check the your heel pads and soles. 👍🏻

      When should heel pads be replaced? Are heel pads the bit of rubber at the edge if the heel?

    • @trentpotter1889
      @trentpotter1889 Před 5 lety +2

      mark k Correct. The heel pad is the rubber that sits on top of the heel block. They should be taken in for replacement just before you begin wearing into the actual block. This will often occur on the outside edge.

      @@loveflying4488 I find myself replacing the heel pads once or twice before resoling the show, especially on shoes with wooden heels. You must replace it once it starts wearing into the actual heel of the shoe, to avoid damage. And it's cheap.

      mark k You are referring what is Technically called the top-lift. This should be replaced before the rubber is worn out and you begin wearing into the next full leather layer of the heel base. If you begin wearing to the heel base, then it also will need to be replaced during the repair process also.

    Dear Kirby, first and foremost, thank you for your great videos, they are as informative as they are inspiring. May I ask what is your view on half soles (rubber sole protectors)? Do they really extend the lifetime of your sole? Would you recommend fitting it on a new pair of shoes?

  • @1061shrink1061
    @1061shrink1061 Před 5 lety +10

    What are your thoughts on companies like Crockett & Jones who seem to insist on fitting a new welt every time you send a pair of shoes back in? Has always seemed to me that this would shorten the life of the shoes terribly. Surely replacing the welt only when it absolutely cannot be stitched to a fresh sole is best? Seems that is your approach here, even using original holes where possible to extend the life of the welt.
    Crockett actually specific that a pair of shoes can only be re-soled 4-5 times, and I imagine this is because they're fundamentally damaging the insole and upper every time they stitch on a new welt!

    Hello, and thank you for these useful insights on shoe care. I have a practical question. We generally agree that we should not wear the same pair of shoes twice in a row. Is this only referred to two days in a row? For example, if I have a meeting in the morning, let's say from 8:00 to 12:00, and then I get back home and take the shoes off, should I wear the same pair for an evening meeting the same day, or should I wear another pair? Thank you!

      Leonard Levy I can Tell you one difference between Allen Edmonds and Kirby’s service is that Allen Edmonds will re-stretch the shoe over its original last that it was made on, and I personally hate that because it tightens the shoe all around. It’s actually made my favorite pair from them too tight to wear if I know I’ll be on my feet for more than 4+ hours. And Kirby’s also receive a polish with all saphir products vs AE refinishing the shoe with dye that strips the patina shoes develop over time.

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  Před 5 lety +2

      Leonard Levy The biggest difference is going to be the amount of time, attention, and most importantly, the quality of materials we are using. AE does not use JR Rendenbach outsoles, top lifts, or heel blocks. During our re-crafting process, we replace the particle leather heels that AE delivers their shoes with with full leather JR Rendenbach heel blocks. Just a few differences

      It is really difficult to change the shape of the shoe during the resoling process because it would require the at the upper be released from the welt... this is contrary to the entire point of Goodyear welted shoes -- that they can be easily resoled without disturbing the upper.
      Dress shoes can be STRETCHED to make them fit larger. This involves stretching the upper and is really the only way.
