Blackpink's popularity is no joke. As the President of Korea recently said at the US Congress: "You may not know my name, but you definitely know bts and blackpink." Their influence is so high that it has long gone beyond the usual music scene, they were personally invited to perform by the first ladies of France and the United States (by the way, I recommend watching their performance in France Le Gala Des Pieces), their concerts were attended by the royal family of Thailand, the President of France with his wife, their songs were used by the Vice President of Taiwan for his video. By the way, they have many joint songs with artists you probably know, for example, Selena Gomez, Cardi B, Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, etc.

You guys really should have done the research first. It’s perfectly fine to go in blind, but if you choose to do so, then don’t make such sweeping assumptions about who they are , what they do, and how they do it. 90% of your assumptions were completely wrong. It’s not just a formula. Ignorance about K-pop is extremely rampant in the US because, for the most part, we think everything good must somehow come from here the US. The best entertainment these days is not coming from here. Those of us who were willing to check out what else is out there discovered that the best content is no longer American. We have fallen behind exactly because of that attitude. Blackpink is so much bigger than you realize.

BLACKPINK is totally different from the other kpop groups since their concept is totally urban and international, they have a high influence of HIP HOP, EDM, POP, R&B, INDIE, COUNTRY and their concerts look like ROCK concerts since they are with a 100% band live, that's why in just 7 years of career they are already the biggest girl group in the world and in history.

BLACKPINK with 88 million subscribers on CZcams is officially the artist or singer with the most subscribers in the world.
He is also the #1 most streamed artist in the entire history of CZcams with over 30 billion views on his channel.
It is also the girl group with the most streaming in the history of SPOTIFY with 10 billion views, the merit is that they only have 38 songs (adding SOLO, group and collaborations) and 7 years of musical career, quite a phenomenon.

There are no weak members in BP. Quite the opposite. So as to your question, who is Beyonce? Well think of a Beyonce (Lisa, greatest raps and dancing and stage presence), Rihanna (Jennie, rapper singer extraordinaire), Taylor Swift (Rose, Australian indie music guitar piano player with the best vocals), and Lana Del Rey/Adele (Jisoo, with the strongest vocals, bluesy vibes). They have all come out with solo songs with each breaking records. Jisoo, the member with the least English speaking skills, and arguably the least popular internationally, just came out with her all-Korean solo, having a totally different vibe than BP songs, and has broken the record for sales by a female kpop idol, and is the first Kpop female idol to break into the UK top 40, and the fastest Kpop female idol to reach 100 million streams on Spotify (32 days, Lisa is second with 37 days), and only second on the global charts to Miley Cirus Flowers. And Jisoo has won numerous Lead Actress awards for her Kdrama Snowdrop (on Disney+). Think the Korean combination of Jennifer Lawrence and Adele. They are all global ambassadors for the most successful French fashion houses and jewelry designers (Dior, Channel, YSL, Celine, Cartier, Tiffany, Bvulgari). As to the "wheels coming off", well Lisa just turned down $80 million contract offer with a Chinese music agency (Lisa is huge in China having appeared a Judge on Chinese talent shows) so that she could sign another 5 years with Blackpink, while the rest of members also extended their contracts for those 5 years. These girls went through 4 to 6 years of hell together as Trainees, they are tight.

As they've grown, they've become more involved in the music writing some of their own. Actually they did in the beginning as well, but weren't allowed to take credit.

  • @TraderJoe888
    @TraderJoe888 Před rokem +19

Good reaction. Blackpink is to female Kpop what Destiny's Child was to American female groups, the best and never matched. Teddy Park is their sole producer, a Korean American who was a hard-core rap star in Korea in his youth. So, you get that vibe in their songs, but his genius, and you will see if you listen to more BP, is blending various genres like traditional Korean and Middle Eastern instrumentals with R&B, Rap, EDM, Country acoustic guitar riffs and even Classical music in their latest all rap song. You said you heard it before, well you are 40 something, that means very few listeners under the age of 25 have heard what you remember. And guess what, you haven't heard it in decades. And furthermore, you didn't really hear anything like the melding of genres, you just heard a single genre version. If you haven't' figured it out, listeners today, especially Americans, are bored to tears with single-genre music with half-assed music videos that could have been better produced by a high schooler. Americans have basically heard the same songs regurgitated over and over for decades and are looking for something better and more interesting. That is why Blackpink just finished headlining the quintessential American music festival Coachella, to critical and popular acclaim. Yes, they sell out stadiums in France (National Stadium this summer), Brazil, Wembly this summer in England, Mexico City, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong, Saudia Arabia, Dubai, Canada. But they are big hits in the US with a sold out American tour that included multiple days in Houston Atlanta and Dallas, not just LA, NY and Chicago.

  • @allnitedj72
    @allnitedj72 Před rokem +10

I stumbled across your video today. I'm a Korean adoptee so it was a fun reaction to watch and nice to see someone closer to my age reacting to some Kpop. I've followed the Korean music scene for decades (since I was much younger) and watched it grow and change. I looked at your other newer videos and looked through the top comments and didn't see anything addressing some of your questions, so I thought I'd drop a long comment. South Korea takes its entertainment industry very seriously. Music and movies made in South Korea have equivalent budgets to most big Hollywood movies but without some of the entrenched hierarchy. As far as the music industry goes, it is a meat grinder. Prospective artists essentially go through an academy where they train their vocals, their dancing, and work on their 'look'. Most (probably 75% wash out or quit before they are ever picked up by a label. Those that do are usually put in groups for more training while the label decides what genre or look the group will have. Almost all Kpop groups have no control over their music which leads to very cookie cutter careers, but every now and then a particular group will break out. These break out groups, like Black Pink, Mamamoo, Twice, EXO, etc. will often get more control over their music/appearance/schedule as they get more and more popular. Since Kpop started the labels have tried to expand into the US market with little success beyond one-hit or one-record wonders. PSY was really the first Korean artist who broke through to become a true international success and that was by accident. BTS and BlackPink are the largest sustained successes and they have achieved more than the labels could have hoped for, for different reasons. BTS really succeeded through sheer determination while BlackPink's success is more a unique combination of personalities, skills, and charisma. Each young lady appeals to a different demographic in the world. Lisa and Jeannie really hit the American and European demographic, while Jisoo and Rose sort of cover the Pacific demographic. Rose is Australian, Jisoo is born and raised in South Korea, Jeannie is Korean but was raised overseas, and Lisa is Thai. In real life their personalities compliment each other and they are great friends. In South Korea its not uncommon for individual members to have solo careers along with being part of the group, sort of like Phil Collins. There are strict rules though that Kpop artists have to follow and tattoos still have very negative (criminal) connotations through out Asia. its changing slowly.
South Korea has a long, sad, and bloody history with both China and Japan. Though the Korean generations that really remember this are dying out and to the younger generation its just history even though much of the conflict and bloodshed only dates back to WW2. After the Korean War, the United States had great influence in South Korea with troops stationed there since the cease fire along with UN troops. Officially, South Korea and North Korea are still at war, there was no peace treaty signed - just a cease fire. Most younger Koreans speak at least 2 languages and many speak 3. South Korean culture was very influenced by American culture earlier on. Now they are working on creating their own culture.
As for Passport Bros.. submissive is not the correct word. I've been to Thailand, Korea, Japan, and its not submissiveness. Women are more feminine and take pride in it. They are also very family oriented and believe in harmony within the family. So what appears to be submissiveness is more about being accommodating when its appropriate but they aren't submissive like western women seem to believe. And I've known a few guys who were surprised when they thought they were submissive and learned the hard way that its not submissiveness. There is a difference.
Great reaction. I hope you do take the opportunity to learn more about South Korea. I love my birth country, the food is amazing, the music and movies are amazing, and the culture is so unique from Japan and China.

please be a little more forgiving towards these 4 very young girls. Even if you say you don't understand their popularity or don't believe in them, spend a couple of minutes on what I want to say. In fact, Blackpink, although they are the biggest girl group in history, have come a long and difficult way in an era dominated by many male groups (Blackpink debuted two to three years later than BTS). Back in their homeland of Korea, fans of other groups have been constantly attacking them since their debut for various reasons: nationality - one of the members is Thai, many non-Korean (in English) songs, excessive "Americanization", accusing them of deviating "from the Korean course". Literally until the end of 2022, they did not have a single major award for creativity (daesang) in Korea, while other groups had several dozen. Recently, another scandal occurred: the first lady of the United States sent six invitations for BLACKPINK to perform at the White House, but all of them were ignored by South Korea's head of national security. When this scandal came to light, this ignorant politician was defiantly fired, this situation could potentially damage the respectful relations between the United States and Korea. All this information is in the public domain, you can check it yourself. This is just a small part of everything that surrounds them, they have a lot of both fans and haters. Just have an idea about this and I ask you to be gentler with these girls, they have achieved everything with their own work, they have the fewest awards at home in Korea, but the whole world loves them, I won’t list other commentators tried.

Despite all their popularity, these are the most modest girls in the world😇. I love them for this quality🥰, please see more content from Blackpink, I subscribe and will wait🤩

“Mundane”??? Seriously? I think I know what you meant, but wow was mundane the wrong word to use. Yes, they are very kind, humble, generous, caring, and they never let fame and fortune go to their heads. But mundane literally means boring, uninteresting or dull. They are the most interesting girls I have ever discovered. I know you really are praising them, but please be careful with your choice of words because you accidentally used a word that was the opposite of what you were intending. 👍

Listen to their other songs, for example, How do you like that mv, Pink Venom, etc., I saw a few youtubers out of a thousand who said that they had never heard them, and there are a lot of those who said that it turns out they heard this song (in the radio, tiktok, youtube, etc.), but I didn’t think it was Blackpink.

I think the difference with these KPop groups is that they go to these training places at young age and devote every single second to the music. They are held to standards that most Americans would get in a tizzy over. They have to act respectful, humble and kind when they are out. Yes tattoos are taboo however getting more acceptable. The beauty standards are insane too. I love Black Pink. Stray Kids are my Favorite they are self produced too. Write and make their own beats.

the most impressive thing about kpop is the talent of the members, before debuting in a group they enter at kpop companies and start training in a kind of "traine school". some idols has training for 6-7 years, and others are luckier to debut after 2 years of training.
In this "trainee school" they study music, singing, dancing, rap, stage presence, languages, global influence and many other things. they go through weekly and monthly evaluations, presentations where they write their lyrics, arrangements and so on. many idols help produce their own music. even though they are handled by professionals, they still have a say about what they want and are free to use their creativity

The whole Asian women are submissive is a fallacy. Once you get to know the cultures and the people you will find that there is a whole amalgam of personalities. Also it really does depend on the individual ethnicities even within the same country. Especially now. In general the "passport bros" tend to go to south east asia as the more of what you term traditional women's role is more prevalent. Oh and traditional and submissive are not necessarily the same thing.

Regarding the use of english, the ladies normally perform in either an english-korean mix (some tracks are entirely english) or a japanese-english mix for their japanese performances - Japan is the second biggest music market after the USoA.
You may think their use of two, let alone three, languages is something special, but between them they cover at least 8 languages to at least a basic level - 4 fluently, partly because they're from 3 different countries and learned Japanese as part of their training.
They have all released solo work but they all make the group their priority, usually turning up to support each other during the filming of their solo M/Vs.
You may have heard of some of the people they've worked with - Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez (on a song co-written by Arianna Grande), Dua Lipa and Cardi B.
Incidentally, regarding Miss Grande - remember back in '19 when she set all those viewing and down-load records on CZcams? The records people said would take a long time to beat, but only lasted a week? THIS is the video that broke her records just a week later.
Oh, yes, 1.7 Billion isn't really that extra-ordinary for them - they have at least six vid's with over a Billion views with one being a DANCE PRACTICE, but they've just the single M/V with over 2 Billion...
Don't let the views mislead you, some people watch many, many times - look at the 'likes' number to get a better idea.
Or, look at the subscriber base - over 88 million - that's the #1 of any artist(s) by over 15 million, and #11 of ALL YT channels - not just in Korea, not just in Asia - that's of ALL YT channels.
They are very active in producing content - check out their channel www.youtube.com/@BLACKPINK/featured - and interacting with their fan-base, which helps.
I'll let others tell you about their Coachella shows in '19, their head-lining this year, their global charting and chart toping songs and albums...

I'll give you a good example. Their most popupar song internationally is called DDU-DU DDU-DU. On CZcams it has 2B views currently. The reason why is that it essentially pushed girl crush kpop into a mainstream international audience in 2018 when the fervor for kpop was getting explosive. CZcams algorithms in 2017-2021 also allowed for videos like this to reach more people. Despacito has 8B views because it was an international hit. Some get credit for being involved, some don't get credits, some idols write on their own entirely. But majority have a team of producers and writers.
      It's not a bad thing.
Even western artists use writers and producers, lady gaga always has 3-4 writers for songs.
In India, lyricist write the song and vocalist sing the song.
      Nobody calls them just performers.

Speaking as a western supporter of Blackpink, they are indeed a supergroup that is built to be successful, not something that came up by chance. But honestly, I don't really care, as long as I enjoy the final product they are selling. And yes, kpop (and south korea in general) is heavily influenced by usa's culture. It's the country more similar to the West in Asia and they have a huge entertainment industry (both music and movies) and technology (Samsung for example). I love kpop because they successfully blend a lot of genres that, taken by themselves, I don't really like. But I love the mix. And another thing that it's harder for newcomers to understand about kpop is the connection to the idols, they put their life in display since they still have to debut, and you get to follow all their struggles, so you form a bond with them. Plus, the idols usually are extremely humble people, very down to earth, much much different from the usual huge western star. All these factors contribute to the kpop popularity. Oh, and you asked about who's gonna leave the group to become a star... Blackpink members all have also solo projects, and they have been extremely successful also as soloists. They are all huge superstars, not just as a group.

Okay so you guys are 40s and are at least open minded. While BP has been modeled after girl groups of the 90s-2000s, they are the best at that genre at the present. Nobody does it like they do which is why they are refreshing to the eyes. They dont have to strip naked to sell, but their songs are all bangerz. Yes, they do get writing credit for the songs. Yes, each member has solo projects so they can prove to you they are all talented and they shine on their own, but as a group???They are majestic. Watch their live Coachella performances or other BP music videos and u'll know what I mean.
Also, the name BlackPink refers to two side of femininity. The dark and light side, because while they are all beauties and feminine, they still give off a rock IDGF vibe (yessss they have explicit songs too). BP has been making hits since 2017 and they definitely dont need bots to rank up the billion views. The amount of reactors and soldout concerts wud just tell u why they dont need it

    Kpop means Korean pop.
And Korean culture is very different from China and Japan even though it is the same East Asia.

The breakout member is definetly Jennie, she's the IT-girl of the group.
Always the most mentioned member no matter where they are,Coachella for example shows that perfectly.
She's the ACE of the group, meaning that she's talented in every aspect: Singing,Rapping,Dancing,Songwriting,Producing and Composing.
She's recently been invited to the met Gala, other than that she's putting out a collab with the Weeknd and starring in the Tv-show "The Idol" which will have its first screening at the Cannes Film Festival which Jennie will also attend.
She's the Global ambassador of various brands like Chanel,Calvin Klein Gentle Monster, Tamburins, Hera and so many more; she has designed two Sunglass collections, one Calvin Klein Collection and her own Porsche Car in Collaboration with Porsche.
As you see Jennie really is thee IT-Girl.

Almost the polar opposite of Ren. It's cool how you can appreciate both at the same time.
The Korean on his ask a Korean website did a great series on Korean popular music from 1945 onwards. It's a really fascinating story.

BLACKPINK also set records (that are now broken by BTS) for views within 24 hours (86.4M) views on their song How You Like That.. That song broke 100M the next day... and 6 days after that broke 200M... BUT ... almost all of their music videos have 1 Billion Views.. DDU-DU-DDU-DU has over 2 billion views... their producer's name is Teddy Park
They headlined Coachella 2023 THIS year ... yes the music festival in Arizona... THAT COACHELLA..
Jennie (The first girl you saw) is the global ambassador for Chanel (YES, THAT CHANEL, (the Luxury Designer brand) AS well as Calvin Klein and Porsche
Lisa (The girl in the shopping cart) is the global ambassador for Celine (Luxury Brand) ALONG with Bulgari (YES another Luxury brand) and is also a global ambassador for MAC Cosmetics
Rose (The girl singing and running away from the car while simultaneously driving it) is a global ambassador for Yves Saint-Laurent (Another Luxury Brand) (she showed up at the Met Gala in 2022 with their creative director in a custom made outfit She was also named a global ambassador for Tiffany&Co in 2021
Jisoo (the girl firing the burning arrow) is a global ambassador for Dior (YES that Dior) AND she joined Cartier (YES you guessed... another luxury brand) as one of their models in May of Last year..
As for the BLINKS (Blackpink's Fandom name) I know people that are anywhere from 5 years old to 45 years old of all races, sizes, and BOTH genders that are huge fans of them WORLDWIDE.. AND yes you guys are right... these ladies SELLOUT every SINGLE venue they perform at for their performances regardless of where they perform at in the world.
Furthermore, the girls have singles with US or American Pop Superstars...
Sour Candy - With Lady Gaga
Ice Cream - With Selena Gomez
Kiss & Make up - with Dua Lipa
Bet You Wanna - With Cardi B
Furthermore , 5 days ago on May 11 2023 Jennie was at a party for one of the brands she represents (Calvin Klein) and she released a 40-50 second snippet of an unreleased single that is coming out at some point (no confirmed release date) BUT It's her and The Weekend.
So... yes BLACKPINK is in fact the female version of BTS and they are MASSIVE.

Asians definitely aren’t all “super conservative”,
even the ones that have some of that, aren’t all super conservative,
my fiancée is definitely traditional but she’s also independent and does her own thing.

What was the age? 40s? Umm... Sir... It's never late to get rid of prejudices, and it's never late to be Mentally in 40s too💀

One thing you should consider when talking about the size of the views/ fan base for Asian boy/girl groups especially, is the population of Asia. China ALONE has almost a third of the global population. And they're neighboring Korea, so it wouldn't be unusual for them to share some pop music. That's a HUGE target audience right there. And that's not including western audiences or others who enjoy their music as well.
