      You’re right…that’s because Joseph got the linen shroud BEFORE Shabbat even started. According to Dueteronomy 21:23, a body hung on a tree or tied to a pole would be buried the same day BEFORE SUNSET. Shabbat starts Friday at sunset, when the actual day of Friday technically ends according to the Hebrew calendar. So it wasn’t even a Sabbath nothing when Joseph or any of his servants would’ve bought the linen shroud. This is a very easy “contradiction” to refute. I must admit I don't agree with the point about the aorist participle. Aorist either has a simple aspect (came, saw, went vs. coming, seeing, going), or has a narrative aspect of retaining the previous tense (for instance, if you began the narration with a perfect tense then the aorist carries a perfect aspect). If Mark was trying to say what you suggest in the video he would have used the pluperfect tense, which would indicate that Joseph of Arimathea *had already bought* the linen.
    Otherwise, good video.

    • @beckc.5084
      @beckc.5084 Před 3 lety +1

      No, because the pluperfect active does not have the participle mood. Like the imperfect tense, it only has the indicative mood.
      I don't think Mark would have had to use a different participle than the one he used. If anything, he might have had to use an adverb like "πρότερον" to make it more clear.
      Given the context of the phrase however it's beyond doubt it was an action that Joseph did not too long before taking Jesus down the cross, because it's presented right before another verb in the same tense, kathelwn. But it's not necessarily the tense here that denotes it, it's only the context of the situation and the way the two verbs are presented in parallelism. The only way to know the temporal aspect of an aorist participle is the context of the phrase and the tense of the main sentence.

    • @thejollyviking8083
      @thejollyviking8083 Před 3 lety

      @@beckc.5084 "No, because the pluperfect active does not have the participle mood."
      I'm not sure I would consider participles "moods" (Greek already has enough of those), but you are right that there is no pluperfect participle in Greek. What I should have said is that it would have been in the perfect tense (having bought) since that is the participle with a completed aspect.
      The main point of my comment is that aorist does not have a completed aspect (which is what is retained in a participial phrase, rather than the time)
      "I don't think Mark would have had to use a different participle than the one he used."
      Why not? I will admit you probably have a much better understanding of Markan vocabulary than I do, since I am much more well versed in Classical rather than New Testament Greek (which, if I'm honest, has always been a little weird to me). Nevertheless, I simply don't see how an aorist participle *by itself* would imply that something *had already been accomplished*
      As for your last paragraph, that's more or less what I was saying. The aorist tense (especially the participle) is used regularly in narration of a story because the events of the story already happened, and the aorist tense is the most convenient for saying "x happened" without getting into the nuances of levels of completion that other tenses imply. I merely wished to point this out as I found it to be the most questionable part of the video.

First the Kalam Ontological argument which goes like this, for anything that came into existence, there must have been something that caused it to come into existence. Clearly, effects have causes. Pretty basic, and entirely consistent with our common-sense experience of the world.
      Second, the material universe (the cosmos) came into existence sometime in the past. Virtually everyone affirms this point because of the widespread evidence that shows the universe did in fact have a beginning, Therefore, the material universe must have had a cause. This cause must be space-less because it created space
      timeless because it created time
      immaterial because it created matter
      powerful because it created something out of nothing
      intelligent because the creation event the universe was precisely designed and personal because it made a choice to make something out of nothing and. That "it" is what we call God. Second would be the moral argument which is pretty basic. The argument can be summarized in the following syllogism:
      Premise 1: If God does not exist, then objective moral values and duties do not exist.
      Premise 2: Objective moral values and duties do exist.
      Conclusion: Therefore, God exists.
      These are just 2 of the most famous arguments. When your done with your foolishness and ignorance you might shock yourself and find that you can in fact have an intelligent conversation about the topic. JOHN says that Nicodemus--who aided Joseph of Arimathea--came to him "by night" bringing the myrrh and aloes [19:39]. I'd say that "by night" means AFTER the sun had gone down . . . unless . . . In the 3rd chapter of JOHN it says: "There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him" etc. So, maybe the later verse refers to this earlier visit Nicodemus had made to Jesus: "Nicodemus also, who had at first come to him by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes" etc. The words "at first" could refer, then, to that earlier meeting in chapter 3.
      I've argued, in the past, that the words "by night" [19:39] PROVED that the next day sabbath couldn't have begun at sunset, but I now see that this 2-word phrase doesn't qualify as evidence of that.
      However, it should be noted that the 6-day Creation story told in GENESIS chapter 1 has God creating this and that, and then it says, "there was evening and there was morning, the 1st day" etc. In other words, God worked during the first half of the 24-hour day -- i.e. from sunrise to sunset, the work hours of the day, when there is light to see what you're doing -- and THEN there was evening (i.e. the sun went down) and THEN there was morning (when the next day was to begin with the sunrise), the completion of the 1st day.
      When the people of Judah were forcibly relocated to Babylon, they were forced to live according to the time-keeping system of the Babylonians, who began their days at sunset. People assume that the Jews always began their days at sunset as well, and that this didn't change when they were captives in Babylon. However, the Jews used to refer to the first (spring) month of the year as ABIB . . . but then, AFTER they returned from Babylon, they had adopted the Babylonian names of their months -- replacing the name Abib with Nisan (from Babylonian Nisanu). To this day, the Jewish Calendar uses Babylonian month-names, and all but 4 of the original Hebrew names have been forgotten.
      So, could it be that the Israelites formerly reckoned each day's beginning and end as SUNRISE, and then were forced to adopt the Babylonian system, taking on the new Babylonian month-names AND also adopting the new Babylonian time-keeping method whereby each day began and ended at SUNSET?
      Is it possible that the Jews who returned to Judah/Judea might have forgotten that they were supposed to start and end their 24-hour days at sunrise? If they could forget the names of two-thirds of their original month-names, why couldn't they have forgotten when to begin each day as well? Show me a verse where God specifically commands His people to begin each day at sunset. "Thou shalt begin thy days at the setting of the sun."
      I don't think such a verse exists.

      @@patricktilton5377 Good comment, especially on the Nicodemus bit and God and the wording of the creation acccount: the way you phrased I always understood to be the most obvious reading.
      However, I think that the whole "days begin at sunset" is a miscoception stemming form modern understanding. In ancient times, a day lasted from sunrise to sunset. This is when you did your work or business. From Sunset to sunrise there was night, when you slept. So one day was over when the sun set. Another began when the sun rose. In terms of the Sabbath, this of course meant that as soon as Friday's sun set, work stopped as you didn't work during the night and the next day was Sabbath.

He was a psychologist. Anyway, I think Loftus came from a fundamentalist background and that might be a big part of the issue. Fundamentalism - I recognize that is a loaded term and it can mean different things to different people - can be hard to reconcile with the modern world. I don't believe the Church fathers were particularly fundamentalist themselves. I am sure theres more to Loftus's story but I have seen a level of nastiness in him that makes it hard to sympathize with. Losing one's faith is a painful, anxiety-inducing thing. Perhaps that accounts for the nastiness.

If Joseph had already purchased a new tomb or had one excavated in preparation for his own or family members burial, it would make sense that he may also have had his grave linens prepared too. He comes across as someone who prepares for future events, and no one doubts that he had the required wealth to do so. It also seems obvious to me that the body preparation was rushed, just as suggested in the text and stated in this video. ie: The women went back to the tomb to anoint the body.

    This is easily explained when you understand that Scripture teaches Jesus was crucified on Wednesday, not Friday. Note that it's not just Saturday that is called a "Sabbath" but also other Feasts (Lev. 23:1-8,24,32,38,39). In Mark 16:1 the women purchased spices AFTER the Sabbath. That couldn't have been Sunday because in Luke 23:56 they "prepared" the spices BEFORE the Sabbath, and they rested on the Sabbath after preparing them. The Sabbath referred to in Mark 16:1 is the Passover, which that year occurred on Thursday (beginning at sundown Wednesday). The women purchased the spices on Friday, after the Passover, prepared them, then rested on the Sabbath in Luke, Saturday.
    They brought the spices to the grave first thing Sunday morning (Mary Magdalene, who was involved in the purchase and preparing actually showed up to the tomb before sunrise; John 20:1).

      The “whole what day did Jesus die” is thoroughly convoluted because the NT authors were each writing different theology with respect to Jesus death. The 3 days 3 nights prophecy is likely an after the fact prophecy they placed on Jesus lips. Mark depicts Jesus as confused and silent all throughout his trial and crucifixion, which is completely counter to Johns narrative that shows Jesus in total control in the grips of death. Johns depiction is likely less historical than Marks account, as John purposely moves the day of Jesus crucifixion as depicted in Mark so that Jesus was actually crucified in the day of preparation - literally becoming the “lamb of God”.

    The sun went down at noon fulfilling Amos 8:9 “i am the lord that caused the sun to go down at noon”. That verse has to be fulfilled sometime because God doesn’t say anything that’s arbitrary. The sun came up at three in the afternoon went out down at three came up again went down again Friday night went down Saturday night that’s three days & three nights according to how the Jews count time - Sun up to sundown.
    Joshua made the sun stand still in the sky an extra 24 hours, & it was still counted a single day!
    God will cut short the days like Jesus said in Matthew 24 in revolution 8 when the meteor hits the earth & a third of the earth is destroyed along with its population; the earth goes to 16 hour days and lose a third of its time; says 2nd to the the last verse in revelation eight.

    The Mishnah verse doesn't actually say you could "buy" anything. In order for Joseph to "buy" linen then that implies there must have been someone to "sell" it but buying and selling was illegal on a festival day. The commandment to do "no ordinary work" was in reference to allowing food preparation only.

    • @Kingrich_777
      @Kingrich_777 Před rokem

I’m actually confused as to how someone as intelligent as IP didn’t give this explanation, which is much less convoluted.

I never thought much about the context until a few years ago. I guess I figured - strangely for a Catholic - that if the Bible is the word of God it's context must always be evident.
