World’s Toughest Boat Trips - The Great Lakes: • World’s Toughest Boat ...
This series explores some of the most fascinating and hard-core boat journeys on the planet. We undertake epic journeys by boats in some of the toughest environments on earth. During our journeys we look at how the technology of boat travel has been adapted to survive, trade with and connect isolated communities.
The Philippines is the world’s second largest Archipelago comprising of 7,107 stunning Islands nestled in the Pacific Ocean’s Coral Triangle. Ever since the first Malaysian and Indonesian settlers arrived nearly 70,000 years ago, boats have played a fundamental role in shaping the country, its people, economy, and culture. In our hour-long adventure, we explore five of the Philippines' most breathtaking Islands.
Starting in the chaos of Cebu City, Zoe D’Amato explores the birth of the Philippines and its main religion, Christianity. After a tour of the port, observing how the shipping industry acts as the country's lifeblood, we head North to the sleepy oasis of Bantayan Island. Famous for its fishing, we join a local fisherman and learn how life revolves around the ocean for so many people.
On the island of Negros, Zoe experiences one of the world’s most vibrant and spectacular fiestas - the Maskarra festival, a month-long extravaganza of dazzling dances, shimmering costumes and smiling faces. The highlight of the festival is the intensely competitive street dance contest and Zoe joins the defending champions in their bid to retain their title and gain a grand slam victory.
After a 36-hour ferry crossing the magnificent Sulu Sea, sleeping on the deck, we finish our journey in Palawan, the Philippines' last ecological frontier. Zoe discovers palm-fringed beaches, rugged limestone cliffs, meandering rivers, and lush tropical rainforest. We meet a local Badjao tribe, known as Sea Gypsies, who traditionally spend their life at sea, living on bamboo banca boats before heading to Tay Tay to learn about one of the World’s most exotic gems - the South Sea Pearl. For centuries Badjao tribes have risked their lives diving for these elusive jewels. Visiting the Jewel Mer Pearl Farm, we learn that today’s pearl hunters are taking a more scientific and sustainable approach. Zoe helps the team with daily tasks from the lab to the hatchery, harvesting golden pearls.
Our epic adventure ends in the exquisite, turquoise waters of the Bacuit Circuit sailing Tao Philippines majestic Paraw. This Filipino outrigger was built using traditional techniques and its passionate crew will teach our presenter the ropes and the history of these stunning sailboats.

This is how a documentary should be presented thanks for the entire team.
I would like to commend the host as she has that kind, receptive and humble approach to this documentary. She really immerses herself to this entire journey full of wonderment. Big respect to her. 🙌🏻💫
she's super cute
The dog in the end. That was just lovely and adorable.

Wow ! Modesty aside, there are so many documentaries that are maybe better and exciting, BUT, this one, is EXCELLENT ! Proud to be a Filipino. You NAILED it ! That’s the Filpino way. Thank you Madame.
you will never go wrong once you are in Philippines..you can easily communicate with people and the food, place, and the people are amazing
Travel journalists should learn from her. Presenting the country as it is, with no comparison to more developed western countries. She also appears down to earth and is genuinely interested to learn the Filipino culture. Thank you for making this video.
She’s like a female version of Rick Steves, a true specialist in travel documentaries. I’m hooked on Zoe’s candid skills and her ability to bring destinations to life. Her insights and storytelling style make an episode a delightful to watch. Was this broadcasted in France or BBC tv?
I like that: "Sometimes you have to be crazy to be normal"
I guess this what makes us Filipinos!
winning the champ with costumes on, that was spontaneous...
I would watch this six times without getting tired of it
My parents are both from Negros Oriental, my father when he was a kid along with his other brothers help out in the sugar cane field cutting and carrying them. Both of my grandparents from my father side were simple people back then, my grandmother a simple market vendor and my grandfather a market rent collector. Their 8 kids were spread out with different part time jobs after school. Fortunately, all 8 became professionals working as 2 engineers like my father, 2 doctors with one in the US, 1 accountant and a lawyer and 2 judges. Thanks for the video, the part were you shown the sugar cane in Negros just reminded me of my family there.
the whole world is always welcome to see our beautiful people, culture and islands. We are proud of our Motherland, the Philippines❤️🇵🇭

I don't often finish Documentaries even if it's about my country, but this time I did. Maybe because of the presentor. The way she tells the story was crisp and clear. Hope to see more from Zoe D' Amato soon.

I hope you started from Sorsogon, Masbate, Samar, Leyte, South Leyte Siargao, then Camiguin, Siquijor, Bohol & Cebu, Negros, Panay, Romblon, Marinduque, Mindoro and all the way to Coron & El Nido Palawan. Those are PH gems, & strings of Pearls island chains where some of the Most beautiful beaches in the World can be found. I dream of travelling all those too someday, in God’s will!

Very nice, Zoe D'Amato for doing these documentary about the Philippine Island, watching here from Canada, originally from the Philippines, viewing your documentary miss the Philippines always are. My home now is Canada but still miss my homeland Philippines. Gdo Bless.
I was born and raised in Iloilo...I haven't been back home in 20 years I really hope next summer I'll be able to take a similar trip since my Mom was born in Cebu.
Your itineraries look good and well planned. The woman selling those dried fishes meant business. She is also poised and well dressed.Documentary films journalists are mostly intelligent and well adjusted individuals. I am a Filipino but have not gone to all these big islands in the Philippines. I am from Iloilo but I noticed you did not tour our island haha.
OMG, I just found your video. I've lived in Davao for almost 1 year, you were awesome, appreciative, of new culture, I loved Evert minute of this video, and so did my Pinoy friend. Ty.

When the Spaniards came to the Philippines, they have the Bible, we have the gold. When the Spaniards left, we have the Bible, the Spaniards have the gold.
Yes it's really true they get whatever they want precious things ang freedom.
@@markusjordantesoro2992 Hindi pa rin tayo "FREE" ngayon. Hawak pa rin tayo ng former colonial master natin thru PBBM and EDCA bases.
Thats why filipinos still poor because they introduce us religion which is to control us
The Bible more valuable.
@@jonnieinbangkok I will trade my Bible with gold anytime. I will be a millionaire in a very short time. I'll just buy many Bibles and trade them all with gold.
beautiful documentary, my favorite part was the bacolod dance festival
Just a correction, Magellan was really looking for the Philippines at that time. The golds of the Philippines (aka Ophir) was already known worldwide even during the time of Magellan. The Spanish government at that time even have a map on how to go to Ophir.
In Tomo III (1519-1522), pages 112-138, of the book Colección general de documentos relativos a las Islas Filipinas existentes en el Archivo de Indias de Sevilla, found in the General Archive of the Indies in Spain, Document No. 98 describes how to locate the land of Ophir.
Even Christopher Columbus was after the golds of Cipango (or what the Chinese called Zipanggu, the land of gold). Christopher Columbus thought that he already reached Asia but he was actually in the Americas.
What an amazing journey! That end of Palawan boat journey is one of its kind. First time knowing about it.
This is the best documentary of the Philippines..she has pointed out some facts without creating negative image on the country. Well done!

I love this documentary from mexico
one of the best documentary
I took an expedition with Tao Philippines in 2014, unfortunately it wasn't on the Paraw, but what an adventure. The crew was awesome and my fellow guests were really fun to hang out with. What great memories I had. One thing about this organization is that their trips are simple affairs yet worthy beyond the cost (very reasonable in my opinion). You really get to know the country and the people from the places you visit.
Tao also gives back to their community, not only in gifts, but they hire locals to run everything. Everyone of the crew I spoke to said that they loved their job and the organization, there are scores of people that want to work for them. They also source all their supplies from local vendors and grow much of their own food for each boat trip.
That was 10 years ago and I'm sure they have improved upon what was already extraordinary. Keep it up. Good luck Tao Philippines!
Much love❤ from NJ USA
Zoe D’Amato, thank you for doing documentary some part of the beautiful Philippines...I’ll be looking forward to another Philippines documentary...God Bless 🙏

Philippines has always been an island of seafarers for millenia. Philippines ranks 4th in shipbuilding of the world after china korea and japan. In cebu in Balamban there is global shipbuilding for Cargo vessels, oil tankers and fast crafts that are exported as far as europe and australia
🧢
Google is free, but a clarification Philippines is rank 4th in shipbuilding in the world in terms of tonnage not quantity, but we pretty much build many ships too @@stepgo95
@@stepgo95 most tankers and cargo ships you see are build from here,. Not by a local company though but Foreign Company
Beautiful and Humble ma'am welcome to the Philippines

Milagrosa shipping.
My first ship to ride going to Iloilo I'm happy to see this ship is still working for 17 years ❤❤
Awesome Thank you for Sharing 💯✴
Beautiful Country, my country, thank you for sharing this.
I'm impressed by your trip Zoe. You boarded just about every form of transportation available to the populace, without a single utterance of judgement. After many trips myself I've gotten used to the quirks of travelling in the Philippines and really enjoy the experience, but my first trip was full of "WTF is going on here!" One learns fast how to watch others around you and figure it out.
Edit: I'll admit I've never taken a two night ferry. I flew to Puerto Princessa. That would be a bit hard core for me to spend that much time on that boat.
