  • In this video we are building another electric dirt bike, this time we are modifying the dirt bike engine and installing the electric motor into the engine so therefore we can still have the 6 speed transmission and clutch.

    are straight cut gears normally this loud? or did I mess up the tooth profile on the gears I made causing them to be this loud?

      Spur gears are loud. With oil they are less loud.

    • @trabantpeek3105
      @trabantpeek3105 Před 3 měsíci +131

      Straight cut gears are loud. They will quiet down a bit when they run in oil. Also gears need some time to kind of "fit" with each other, that happens during normal use - gears will naturally create tolerances as they need them.

    I have been building multi speed electric vehicles for 10 years now. I have found that 2 or 3 speeds are ideal. What you will find when you're finished is the gear ratios from the gas bike motor will be too close to be useful. Not a big deal. You will just find yourself skipping gears when you ride. This is truly one of the best DIY builds I have seen. I can't wait to see how it performs.

    A little tip on making gaskets, clamp the paper to the gasket surface and tap around the edges and holes with the ball side of a ball peen, you don’t have to trace anything and tapping it with the hammer will cut it out for you. It’s how I make all my gaskets. Also that fit on that pin may have gone easier if you threw the pin in the freezer for an hour or two as well as heated up the hole in the case.

      @Chopped93VX Před 3 měsíci +3

      @@dogdipstick yeah, that’s real cool if you already have all the gear to scan the gasket surface into a program, otherwise you gotta buy that stuff too. Or you will be measuring for what seems like hours, CAD yourself a gasket, cut it out and it doesn’t fit. Hammers are cheap, and the method I described is a lot easier.

    • @delandbrooks3291
      @delandbrooks3291 Před 3 měsíci +2

      @@Chopped93VX I'm pretty sure I can have a gasket tapped out like you stated, before dog can get to his machine and get one laser cut, The whole idea behind a gasket is to seal minor imperfections, so by the very nature it seldom needs to be a high tolerance material or fit.

    This gear came out exactly the same way,, as i have imagined such an electric gearbox at the time you were trying hub motors in your dirtbike and got your first expetiences with an electric drivetrain for a motorcycle.
    Completely overbuilt, but so absolutely crazy awesome, that all of the spent time on this, the sweat, blood and material which went into this project, does not matter anymore in the end. I can't wait to see tthis gearbox finally drive your cycle in the same way, you and i expected it to perform when the idea was birn to make convert this crazy thought into a real part and push this awesome piece of engeneering and mechanical art into reality.

    Nothing beats a loud exhaust to mask the gear noises.

  • @Profabdesigns
    @Profabdesigns Před 3 měsíci

    Aside from the noise that is transference from the electric motor, nicely done. I have a few tips for you: Make a master of all the gaskets you cut out, buy or make a brass hammer so you don’t mar up anymore pins or mating surfaces, be aware that you will probably crack a case or blow a seal since the torque is way higher than a stock 125cc motor, and use GASKETS on ALL mating flanges including the electric motor, to avoid leaks, Drill a small hole .187” from each cavity to allow all transmission oil to drain back to the gearbox, and use rubber mounts when re-installing it in the frame. 😊 (And yes I am a Mechanical Engineer CNC Machinist with 43 yrs experience. I am here to help if needed.

    8:33 for future reference, don't bore holes to final dimension, always ream them. Go get yourself a set of adjustable reamers (old tools if possible). They'll be your work horses. Boring holes is (believe it or not) still not as precise as a reamer can be, even with a good mill. You'd have to have a brand new mill with high precision tools and everything to approach the preciseness of a reamer.
    edit: also, get yourself some ceramic tile (actual ceramic) squares and make a mount for the bandsaw that places the ceramic tiles at the back of the blade (top and bottom) so that when you press against the blade it doesn't travel all that much. You can glue them in place, doesn't need to be masterpiece level. Quick and dirty will do.

    • @bsealer
      @bsealer Před 3 měsíci

      Actually a boring bar will hold a better tolerance with a better finish, a reamer should be good for .0005 a boring bar should hold the same or better, the reamers advantage is that it will hold size all day

    Chris 32:24 into video pause it, there is a hole from the gearbox area into the cavity below the motor plate. i would say its leaking via that area, and then getting into where the engine mounting bolt cavity is. may wanna drop a alloy weld into that hole and seal it up, but also weld where that cavity touches where the motors semi circle plate seals the motor from the rest of the engine.
    Upright half cricle plate to the engine original alloy
    the hole in the cavity behind that upright motor plate and just to the left of the motor plate is another cavity .
