    Inspired by this and similar vids, I changed the 11-28 for a 11-34 on my Felt CX bike. Kept the short/med cage 105 but used the Road Link and also subbed a 34 tooth chainwheel for the 36. Didn't even need to adjust the chain length. Now I have the 1:1 lowest ratio. The rest is up to me.

    Very good information. I currently need the extra gear of 34t on rear as I am climbing steeper grade mountains. I'm however using a R8000 ultegra front derailleur and rear derailleur in mechanical setup. My front is a compact chain ring set. It's been since 2018 since I used the 34t rear cassette, so I needed a refresher of what is allowed so I came here to this video. Thank you for this.

    This re-assures me for my upcoming installation of 11-34t cassette to my 105 groups with Shimano 105 GS derailed to complete the change to use my Cannondale synapse carbon disc for gravel. Bke accommodates wide tires, just wanted to bring the 105 gearing up to the max for the gravel climbing so I'll end up with 50/34/ 11-34 or 1:1 34/34. So now the Winter bike has a use in the summer and takes away the temptation to buy a gravel bike for a few rides a year. Great video!!

    Great video mate :) I run an 11-34 with my DA 9150. Runs flawlessly, even on the 50 front (tho I don’t cross chain the 50/34). My wife runs and older 6800 Di2 system. Was able to also get it to run a 11-34 with a swap to medium cage a friend had and a roadlink I had 👍🏼

    • @ramunasmacius1988
      @ramunasmacius1988 Před 4 lety +2

      you need to be very careful with Di2 going over the recommended limits - Most Di2 installation steps are similar to those of conventional mechanical groupsets, with one big exception: derailleur limit screws. If these are set too tight or restrictive this can cause extra strain and battery usage for both the rear and front derailleurs. I have drained my battery with 11-32 on SC and it took long to understand why.

    So funny story 😅😅 I just installed a 11 - 36 CS-M771 cassette right now with a Taigra short cage derailleur. It actually works ok, the front is 42 - 52. Using the 52 front and 36 back doesn't sound that good though. But avoiding that I just went for a nasty hill climb bike and it's good. I actually have the Tiagra mid cage derailleur coming so will be changing to that and also replacing the 42 front with a 39 :)

    • @SiggyPony
      @SiggyPony Před 6 měsíci

      I came from a Ultegra 11 - 28 for the cassette. I used to have that FSA crank and chain rings, but the crank died so I swithced to an Ultegra crank but it can't have as smaller chain ring. I couldn't do hills at all with the 28 and 42. 36 and 42 is good, 36 and 39 will be heaven haha

    I have a Trek Emonda SL6 Pro Disc with Ultegra R8000 11s groupset. 52/36 and 11/30 and Short Cage Derailleur SS. I am having issues climbing in this ratio and hence bought a 50/34 and 11/34 cassette and a new HG701 11s chain. But I really don't want to spend on buying a new rear Derailleur and I am not able to find just the cage locally. Based on this video I can see I don't need either. Can you please confirm if my setting should work with the current SS Derailleur and why exactly then it's mentioned to use a Medium Cage?

    • @banjo7127
      @banjo7127 Před 2 měsíci

      I have exactly the same bike/groupset. Currently running 50/34 11-32 gearing that I have upgraded from the stock 52/36 11/30 (I live in Scotland and we have lots of lovely steep hills and headwinds 🤣) but after using 12s Ultra Di2 in Spain with a 34-34 lowest gear I’m going to swap the cassette again to an 11-34. The reason why Shimano state 30 is the largest sprocket is due to excessive safety factors and avoidance of potential court action from customers. Their chain wrap numbers are famously very conservative so 11-32 is considered the actual general max cassette size. Stretching to a slightly larger 11-34 is the same as going 2 teeth up rather than 4 if that makes sense?

    Is the same true for a 105 RD7000 SS? My problem is my freehub body is older type that can only accommodate up to 10speed cassette…. But if I use the 11-34 cassette, I can make it fit the freehub but bot sure if the rear mech can shift all the way… I see you are using an Ultegra RD8000, so I was wondering if it is the same for a 105 RD7000. Simply, brilliant. My bike has a 53/39 crankset and a 11/28 cassette, I have read some instruction manuals from shimano and they suggest to calculate the range (sum of the differences between crankset and cassette) to see if the rear derailleur has the capacity depending on the cage (SS or GS)... Could I move to a 11/34 cassette just with your method or should I replace the SS cage for a GS (keeping the crankset... -chain replacement is necessary to what I understand-)? I would like to have a more "versatil" bike because when climbing up, it makes me suffer (a lot) :')
    thanks in advanced.

      There's not much point in changing the cage to a gs as the actual derailleur knuckle is slighty different on a medium cage derailluer, if you were going to change the cage you might as well fit a gs derailleur! Or swap the front chainrings to a compact 50/34.
