- Come and check out my amazing local fish store, MAD Aquariums (Brisbane, Australia). They are where I bought all of my Lake Malawi Cichlids to stock my fish tank!
In this vlog style video I give a full tour of the store, showing you:
- The amazing tanks and aquascapes they have set up;
- Their African Cichlid stock;
- Other interesting fish they stock.
I discuss:
- How I chose my tank stocking;
- The differences between the types of Lake Malawi Cichlids;
- What food I feed my African Cichlids.
At the time of shooting this video, my African Cichlid tank had been running for about 10 months.
--------------------------------------------------
A big shout out to all of the staff at MAD Aquariums who were so kind today letting me film. I had a great experience and the whole atmosphere was really positive. If you live in South East QLD this store is definitely worth checking out.
I hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed filming it!
If you enjoyed this video and are liking my content, I would love for you to subscribe to my channel!

Thank you Kaity, for your positive words, my Husband and I love working for Katrina and Jack at Mad Aquarium, and enjoy the positive atmosphere that our co workers and customers create 😊 as well as being constantly around fish !!
I will have to make sure I give Katrina a shout out next time too, I have given Jack all of the credit for the awesome store haha! It is truly such a lovely store, and you can tell everyone who works there is working in such a positive environment, and really takes pride in their job. You are so lucky to get to work there every day :)

That pond with the box ontop, that surprises me so much how curious the fish are, it’s like their viewing station.

Wow. That's a huge selection of African Cichlids. I love that whole wall of scaping supplies. There's so much to chose from. I would spend WAY too much time in that store.

This is what I'm doing today. Filling a new tank we've been cycling. Thanks for another awesome video! 🐟
That's so exciting!! Do you know what you're getting yet?
@@Kaityscichlids mbunas but have to see which ones are available and pick the ones that will hopefully co exist peacefully. 🤞
So I ended up with a mixed tank. A few mbunas with more peacocks. Surprisingly everyone is getting along well so far. Headed out tomorrow to get a few more to top off the tank. (A little overstock to downgrade aggression) 🤞 Will be picking up a few electric yellows and a few of any others that are colorful but compatible.
@@cosmicshy637 that's awesome!! I'm so glad to hear they're all getting along. I would love to see the tank if you upload a video of it

Best of luck for all the future videos
Thank you so much!!
🎉🎉🎉 Congratulations on 1,000 Kaity 🎉🎉🎉 Onwards & Upwards ... We are with you
Thank you so so much!!! I am so honoured to have reached this milestone. Thank you so much for all of your support along the way, it's people like you who motivated me to keep making content!
@@Kaityscichlids Kaity 1k ... Well done again ... As an heads up, your going to have to consider setting up a grow out tank, which would be excellent to go into detail on all your decisions ... I can see the ultimate water box with one light source for the ripple effect on the rocks , heater contained in the external filter & clear plastic piping... Nothing rushed but detailed in comprehensive ... Maybe start with a small set of shell dwellers and add babies to grow out ... Your MAD store may even offer you the baby fish for FREE 🤞🏽
Nice tour, thank you
Thank you for watching! 😊
Coming from the western side of the U.S., I wish I would see more stores that look like this. Definitely a good video for your first public shoot. Good work and good luck to you.
Thank you so much 😊
Nice nice video 👍👍👍
Thank you :)
Wow!! I was also one among the few who requested a video of the store in your last video. Didn't think you'd respond so soon!! Thank you so much Kaity! ❤️ The store is really awesome and we can literally see the amount of hardwork they've put in to maintaining the store this well. Once again, very good vlogging style and good editing. Loved how you didn't remove any "bloopers" from the video 😂
Thank you so much!! Yes you were one of the people who motivated me to go do it - thank you so much for all of your support. It is an awesome store, I'm so glad I can share it with everyone
👏👏👏 Kaity, you did brilliantly on what was first store visit ... Commentary & editing just natural... You are blessed to have such a large and comprehensive fish store on your doorstep... The store is bright, clean and the vast number of tanks in pristine condition... Thank you & MAD Aquariums.
Thank you so much!! Yes, I am very very lucky. They are an awesome store
@@Kaityscichlids Kaity 1k ... You got an absolutely amazing 12k views & only 500 likes which is nuts, because I hit the LIKE for every You Tubers video unless its bad 🙃 You could when possible add the SUBSCRIBE & LIKE graphics to the end of your previous video's graphic.

Most underrated shop in Australia!
They're the best!!
I loved watching this and hearing you trying to get to 1000 subs, and 7 months later you’re over 20k! So lucky to have these big stores, it’s almost 7 hours for me to drive to a store half that size here 😂 The tank I’ll be setting up and have already (I’m waiting for room to be painted first) is one of thos aquaone rimless with the concrete look stand 👍 hopefully a good intermediate tank, it’s the 90cm 235l one 😊 I’m slowly watching through your older vids
Thank you so much Carl 😊 This comment made me smile! It's definitely awesome seeing how much things have grown 😊 We are certainly very lucky here in Brisbane
Great job! Love your channel so far. A current usa led background light / frost background would look amazing on your waterbox
Thank you so much! I would definitely consider adding a background to it. I have to move in January next year so that might be a good time to add a frosted background
@@Kaityscichlids I can't imagine moving mine. Make sure to film that undertaking! Frosted looks especially good at night with a led behind it. czcams.com/video/s7p9gKRDqMg/video.html is a good example/kit.
Awesome. Thanks Kaity. One of my favourite Aquarium stores was down that way too. Age of Aquariums. I don't think it exists anymore.
That's so cool! I don't think they are around anymore, I haven't heard of them
@@Kaityscichlids they were at Browns Plains, that's all I remember. Among other things I bought about $500 worth of lava rock for my 1000 cichlid tank.
What a amazing pet store. They have a very diverse variety of fish

That’s a really Nice Shop we used to have a local fish store but the owner passed and his daughter couldn’t afford to keep it going during the Covid shutdown so now all we have is Petco and Petsmart the closest to anything like this where I live is at least a two hour drive in a Chicago Suburb
That sulfer crested cichlid is awesome , definitely something I don’t have access to here in the USA . Very nice tank , I’m jealous

Great store, Bunnings pool filter sand is that orange colour at the moment. Wasn’t happy when I opened it but it does look great with a black background and lots of plants.
Oh wow! That's so good to know, I would love to use that orange coloured sand in the future for a planted tank set up. I think it's really lovely. The pool filter sand I use is Unicorn Pool filter sand from Clark Rubber

@@Kaityscichlids ❤
great store.. one down boondall way as amazing too.
Kaity, thanks for the tour, great window into an Australian fish shop. With regards to the pictus catfish, they are not similar to synos, different continent. Only Tanganyikan species of Synodontis exhibit the cuckoo egg-swap behavior you alluded to in your commentary. A Japanese researcher I met years ago wrote up the behavior from his doctoral studies on lake cichlids at Uvira, then a friend of mine in the British Cichlid Association actually demonstrated the behavior in captivity using frontosas and S. multipunctatus.
The mouth shape and angle in different mbuna species has evolved so they can exploit the various biofilms that grow on the rocks they inhabit. It's nothing to do with them keeping their orientation to the surface, as you assume; they also graze the underside of rocks in the lake. Mbuna don't live near the mouth of the lake, they are found in all shallow rocky habitats throughout the lake. A friend of mine, Ad Konings, with whom I have dived in L. Malawi, has written a number of excellent books about all the cichlid species found in the lake as well as collaborating on some scientific research papers. I would advise anyone seriously starting out keeping Malawi and Tanganyikan cichlids to at least read, if not buy, some of his books. Money well spent.
Thank you so much for the info!!
Great shop. Smith's Aquarium & The Tech Den are good too 😊

Wow, do you by any chance know the name of the blue fish in the tank you showed at 6:59 min into the vid? They look like little guys swimming on the right-hand side of the tank. Great vid, you were also on my recommended out here in the USA. (we are just a little better than AUS)
Thank you so much! I had a look and it's really hard to make out, but I think it might be a betta fish with short fins 🤔
I now know where to buy black live worms from lol, thankyou.
I have seven YoYo loaches the clown loaches get too big and they can’t be alone so I opted for the Pakistani Loach initially got them to control a snail over population . Love their energy and insistence on getting in every nook and cranny. Also have Otocinclus in the same tank and two clown plecos which I hardly ever see. Some people don’t like their Hyperactivity and the fact that they can damage plants but, I don’t mind and only have Java Moss anyways . They like to nibble on the baby spinach leaves I feed my Otocinclus and Skinned Peas I feed my plecos and might nibble on the algae wafers a bit for my Cherry Shrimp , plecos, and Otocinclus so they get their veggies.
Just have to keep the top covered to make sure the YoYos don’t jump out and occasionally check to make sure they don’t get stuck in something like the middle my Cholla Wood .
I agree yoyo loaches are the bomb!! I love them so much and enjoy their hyperactivity. I think in general loaches are great 😊
Great job! It's too bad that we don't have similar in NZ. Primarily access to some of the plants. Stricter biosecurity measures. ☹
And I thought Australia was strict! That sucks :(

We seem to have it everywhere here!
yo its crazy to see my local here XD

hi kaity. love your channel! i have a similar scaped tank to yours here in scotland. i have a mixed mbuna with some assorted clean up crew tank mates. please could you help me by answering a question please? how have you found mixing haps mbuna and peacocks as id love to add some. my tank is farely peaceful with lots and lots of holey rock for the mbuna
Hey Darcae! I have found them to be all just fine together. I think having the combination of plenty of swimming space for the haps and peacocks and the holey rock for the Mbuna has worked well. Then I just make sure to feed them a low protein pellet with plenty of fibre. I did make a video about how they've gone together a while back, I'll try to find it so I can link it for you

Hello 👋 what was the name of the species of fish you have that is white with long fins and yellowish fish with drak eyes and mouth. I'm loving that fish I need it in my tank. Will your fish store be willing to ship to the states? Probably not huh to much paperwork
Hello! I think you might be referring to the sulphur head cichlid - I think it is a Mara Rocks Sulphur Headed Peacock/Hap. I'm not too sure whether they would ship or not, you could always ask them just incase! This is their Facebook page facebook.com/madaquariums
What happened to the other giant gourami?
I'm not too sure! I've only known there to be one there
I would be apprehensive too but I think people are getting used to CZcams and GoPro filming
Love to see a beautiful girl into aquariums and life species awesome
Thank you :)
Can you have African cichlids in small tanks?
Generally not, but it depends what types you get. Shell dwellers are a type of Tanganyikan African Cichlid which are best suited for small tanks 😊
👍👍👍🐟🐳🐟🐳🐬🐬🐬
Hello from sunny Florida! My name is Brandon, I have a channel as well. This has been a wonderful store to her! You did a great job for filming in public. I still have yet to do that myself. I keep all sorts of fish, though. Africans, south Americans, rainbow fish, Angelfish, live bearers, shrimp, pea puffers, and even a few fancy goldfish. I can’t wait to see what all your channel has to offer! Give my channel a look as well and let me know what you think. Keep up the great work!🤘🏻🐠🦯

you are prettier than all the fish Kaity
CLOWN LOACHES!
I love them!!
Clown loaches - don't! Unless you have a very large tank with lots of floor space. These things are highly territorial and can be quite aggressive when defending territory, and they do like to take up a large territory. Their behavior disrupts the territories of the mbuna, which, ime, leads to disputes. They're cute when young and don't cause trouble, but when they grow larger, so does the aggression. If you have an mbuna community which is settled and fairly peaceful, best not to spoil it for the sake of wanting a 'pretty' fish. There are other mbuna which are just as pretty. Maybe others have different experiences, so they might chime in with some advice.
What's the environmental impact of the aquarium industry at present ? I remember as a kid people would steal rock from national parks and reserves
Where there's money there's always corruption, especially in poorer countries
As an outsider looking in, it appears to be just another consumer sport for those that can afford it....what is the true cost?
Or is that something we don't want to look at?
These are all great things to think about!
Most things are sourced on private property or in public lands where it is legal. A lot but not all are also bred in captivity others that can’t are caught by locals and then sold unless they are protected species. Then In the United States at least there is state and federal laws about what can and can not be had different states have different laws about what fish can be privately owned.
The only main issue I have seen environmentally which is the same for most exotic pets is for example in Florida where people have gotten common plecos not knowing that they will get big and then just get rid of them in public water ways as a result they have become invasive and are eating plant / organisms that the sea cows Manatees need to eat .
Florida has similar issues with certain lizards and snakes and even some monkeys that got loose from a lab so the problem with invasive species isn’t just with fish.
Mostly this isn’t an issue because for example where I live if my fish got loose they would not survive because it’s either too cold or too hot and they wouldn’t have an adequate food source.
As for the economic aspect some people are taken advantage of in many areas of commerce in the world were as others actually benefit from it . Some people in the world in South America for example wouldn’t have a source of income if we didn’t buy the fish they catch or raise.
My driftwood and so on all came from private farmers and people that harvest it on their own property
William
believe it or not some people that you claim are victims in this industry from the fish that can not be bred in captivity make a very good living catching and distributing the fish to Aquarist an income they wouldn’t otherwise have. And rocks are everywhere not just national parks.
Lay off the social Justice Marxist far left rubbish and go out in the world and see what’s really going on and in the process perhaps do something that actually helps impoverished people instead of just complaining about stuff and demonizing everything in western civilization
@@MClover420 you're absolutely right, I'll go back to walking in circles with the rest of the sheep...enjoy your goldfish or whatever's - that you've deprived of their god given connection to Mother Earth for your own selfish enjoyment.
Namaste MFR and happy aquariuming
